History

Washington has a stranglehold on the Apple Cup. They lead the series at 69-32-6. They Huskies have won the last two games. They've also won five of the last six meetings. Last year UW travelled over to Pullman and smoked the Cougars 31-13. The Cougars didn't even get onto the scoreboard until there were five minutes left in the 4th quarter.

Numbers

Cougar Offense

3.16 - Yards gained per rush attempt.

3.18 - Number of sacks the Cougs are surrendering per game.

7 - Number of rushing plays to go over 20 yards this season.

37 - Number of rushing attempts on third down.

41.1 - Third down completion rate.

84.36 - Number of rushing yards per game.

145 - Number of rushes on first down.

407 - Number of passing yards per game.

Cougar Defense

5.06 - Yards given up per rush.

10 - Interceptions this season.

12 - Passing TD's allowed.

20 - Rushing TD's allowed.

46.01 - Opponents' third down completion percentage.

59 - Longest rush allowed this season.

59.6 - Opponents' completion percentage on first down.

31 - Number of yards they give up per punt return on the road this season.

Questions Needing Answers

Offense:

Can the offense put together 2 consecutive good showings/complete games? Can the lack of turnovers last week turn into a trend? How will the line hold up to the pressure form Wazzu's front 7? How quickly will the O-line be able to get to the second level in run blocking?

Defense:

How will the defensive secondary hold up to the Cougar passing attack? How many times will the defense need to get to the Coug QB to rattle him?

Miscellaneous:

Will Pettis be able to have a punt return for a touchdown in two consecutive? How much of a factor will the crowd be? What cartoon character does Mike Leach most resemble?

Conclusion

This game is a pick 'em for me. This Cougar defense is very opportunistic, but they also have a tendency to get gashed on the run big time. They have held two teams to under a hundred yards rushing in a game, but have given up over 200 yards rushing in six games. If the Huskies can eat up a bunch of clock, and then finish those drives with touchdowns, they should be able to keep just ahead of the Cougs on the scoreboard. Look for the Huskies to run the ball often in the early parts of this game, to open up the intermediate and long passing game.

As for the Cougar offense, they can score in a hurry. So, building an early lead will be imperative. But, as we learned in the Arizona State game, that early lead isn't everything. The Huskies need to keep the Cougs from scoring touchdowns, and they need to get to the young Cougar quarterback.

I am worried that the Huskies will come out slow in this game. Hopefully not. I look forward to downing an entire bottle of TUMS during this one. I'll predict a one score game that will come down to the very last series, yet again.

Vegas Odds

According to VegasInsider, the Huskies are 6.5 point favorites heading into this contest. I think that's a little bit high, but, who knows. The advanced stats seem to be saying otherwise. The point total is set at 54 points, which seems a bit low. But what do I know? I've never bet money on anything, ever.

In a game that was never in doubt, the Huskies took home a big victory over the in-state rival Cougars.

The Washington Huskies extended their all-time advantage in the Apple Cup rivalry in a dominant effort over the Washington State Cougars, who were shut out of the first three quarters before two garbage-time touchdowns led to the final 31-13 final score.

Washington's defense used stellar coverage by the back end of the defense to shut down the Mike Leach Air Raid attack. Each of the Cougars' first three drives ended with failed attempts to convert third-and-short, with the Washington secondary stepping up big, like it did all game long.

The offense took all of two plays to create a touchdown, with Dwayne Washington taking an inside handoff, sifting through several blocks before finding a whole bunch of green in front of him, in what ended up as a 51-yard touchdown run. It took the Washington offense three punts and a deflected interception before the Dawgs would find the end zone again. Five plays after a WSU fumble Kasen Williams scored his second touchdown of the season on a fade route to the corner of the painted turf. 14-0 Huskies.

Coming out of the half, the running back Washington did it again, with a 60-yard touchdown on the second play of the half in what effectively sealed the game, putting the Huskies up 21-0 and sucking what little life was left out of the Cougar faithful.

Instant Reaction Dots:

Cyler Miles has continued his progression as a quarterback. His interception was only partially on his shoulder, and his only other real poor play was a bad underthrow to John Ross that probably should have been intercepted. He hasn't been facing much resistance in his recent games, but he has still performed well against the lesser defenses of the Pac-12.

The pass rush wasn't insatiable in its quest for blood, but it didn't matter much to the pass defense. Luke Falk wasn't all that bad, but his receivers couldn't finish the plays he began, with dropped passes plaguing the Washington State receivers. Whether the cause was lack of sensation in the fingers or concentration issues, even Vince Mayle, with over 100 receptions on the year, was dealing with drops. On fourth down WSU even dropped a touchdown that wasn't all that well defended in one of the few coverage busts for the day.

Joshua Perkins continues to be a developing weapon in the passing game. Against UCLA four weeks ago he set his career-high for receptions in a game with four, and hadn't been below that mark until tonight, though he made up for it was a touchdown catch in traffic. He is a chain-mover on third down and is effective on intermediate routes. <strike>He hasn't been tasked much with running the seam, though that is more likely to be a result of Miles playing quarterback than Perkins' inability to run the route effectively.</strike> After I wrote that line, Perkins had his very impressive touchdown grab on a pass from Miles on a seam route.

The best position group of the night for Washington was the secondary. With even a little bit of a pass rush Washington State would have been shut out with the effort from the back end of the defense. The pass rush has been able to hide some of the growing pains of having a secondary as inexperience as Washington's, especially since the dismissal of Marcus Peters. In this Apple Cup it was the other way around, with the secondary making up for the pass rush rarely causing much of an impact.

John Ross has developed well as a cornerback, and with his size and speed could profile as a slot cornerback in the NFL. He would need to improve his ability in run support, which he has done each and every game. He showed off his receiving ability with an interception, as well as another near-pick in the first half. Kevin King also joined in on the party with his own interception.

Steve Sarkisian's best season with Washington ended with nine wins. With a bowl win, Chris Petersen will end up with nine wins in his first season.

It was a tougher than expected game against our cross-state rivals, but the Huskies overcame a poor 1st half by the offense and some questionable calls by the zebras to take a hard-fought 27-17 win in the Apple Cup. We take a look at each of the position groups and grade their performance for the game.

On Senior Day in Husky Stadium the team found the sledding a lot tougher than last week against a confident and improving Cougar team. With the offense struggling in the 1st half, the Dawgs found themselves down 10-3 at the half. Fortunately for Husky fans, the team righted themselves at the break and stormed out to a big 3rd quarter to take control, and while things were tense for a while (thanks in no small part to some highly questionable calls by the officials), the Dawgs gutted out a tough one and won 27-17 to break through the 7-win barrier and set themselves up for a possible 9th win. Let's take a look at how each of the position groups played:

QB: It was shades of 2012 Keith Price in the 1st half as he was under frequent pressure and not getting a lot of support from his receivers or run game. He appeared to have a miscommunication with Austin Seferian-Jenkins on a long sideline route - KP seemed to be looking for a back shoulder or curl, but ASJ didn't turn to see the pass and looked to be running a fly pattern and it was an easy pick for Nolan Washington at the UW 9 when the Huskies appeared to be in good position to get their 2nd score of the 1st half. Earlier he had fumbled on a scramble off a hard hit from behind, stalling another drive. After the game Sark alluded to the thought that KP was a little too wound up, playing his last home game as a Husky and trying to avenge a poor performance last year that led to a historic choke job by the Huskies. But in the 2nd half Price was poised and effective, and with the running game hitting it's stride he didn't have to put the game squarely on his shoulders. It wasn't Price's best game by any stretch, but he was still 15 of 20 passing for 181 yards and a TD to go with that pick. He also executed perfectly the read option at the goal line in the 4th quarter to salt the game away 27-17 with just 2 minutes to go. Grade: B-

RB: Another week, another sublime performance from Bishop Sankey. After finding the running tough in the 1st quarter, he got more holes in the 2nd half and Sark made the adjustment to more off-tackle and outside runs and he took over the game. His 7 yard TD run in the 3rd to put the Huskies up 17-10 earned him both the career rushing TD mark and the single season rushing yards records for UW football. His screen play on the Huskies' first drive of the 3rd quarter - picking up 40 yards on 3rd & 5 with the Cougars still holding momentum - was huge in getting the offense on track. He finished with 200 yards exactly on 34 carries and a TD, his 3rd 200 yard game this season and 4th of his career. If this was his final home game as a Husky, he went out with a bang. Grade: A+

WR/TE: ASJ had a couple of classic ASJ catches in this game - passes that only he could get to and secure. It makes you wonder sometimes why KP hasn't looked his way more often this year. Kevin Smith and Demore'ea Stringfellow both had nice games, and while it's great to know that String has 3 more seasons of eligibility, it's equally frustrating that Smith has exhausted his and didn't get to redshirt last year. The bubble screens and rocket motion swing passes were off-target though, and Jaydon Mickens wasn't much of a factor. Hopefully that aspect of the passing offense will get back on track in the bowl game. There were a few too many times in the first half when KP was flushed from the pocket that his receivers were not doing him any favors in terms of coming back to their QB and getting open, but they did a better job in the 2nd half. Grade: B-

OL: This was a classic 2012 performance from the OL. It took them about 1.5 quarters, but eventually they began to assert their will in the running game, and they did a terrific job on that screen pass early in the 3rd quarter to bust it for a big gain. The pass-protection on the other hand was not so good as KP was frequently flushed from the pocket and under pressure, though some of that can be laid at the feet of the WR's for not getting separation from the Coug DB's. To take the next step to championship-level play, they need to step up their pass protection. Grade: C+

DL: For as much flak as this front has taken for their ability to rush the passer, they actually rank 10th in the nation with 3.0 sacks/game. And they were fantastic yesterday, registering 5 sacks and countless other hurries and hits on Connor Halliday. Consider that the Cougars coming into the game had only allowed 22 sacks against 639 pass attempts (compare that with the Huskies who had given up 28 in 366 passing attempts). Against the Dawgs, they surrendered 5 sacks against 59 pass attempts. Hau'oli Kikaha was a man possessed, notching two of those sacks and another 0.5 tackle for loss and 11 tackles total. He was a huge part of the Huskies' ability to contain the Air Raid attack of WSU. Evan Hudson got into the act too with a huge 15-yard sack early in the 3rd quarter that helped kill WSU's drive following the Huskies tying the game at 10-all. Cory Littleton was active too with 7 tackles, one of the sacks and another 0.5 tackle for loss. They weren't perfect - the Cougs managed to gash the Huskies front multiple times with their run game - but the pressure they applied on Halliday was a big reason for the success the defense had in slowing down WSU. Grade: A

LB: Shaq Thompson was on his way to a big game before getting knocked out the game on the 2nd half kickoff. As it was he tallied 6 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup as he was all over the field and making some key open field tackles. Travis Feeney had a nice game as his sideline to sideline speed was a key in helping the Husky defense cope with Mike Leach's spread passing attack. Both guys though had to be kicking themselves after the game for dropping potential interceptions. John Timu wasn't as much of a factor given the emphasis on the pass, and his targeting call helped set up the 2nd Cougar TD, but he did get a nice pass break up and then sealed the game with his interception on the Cougars' last drive. Grade: B+

Secondary: Facing an Air Raid offense is always a challenge for a secondary, but the Huskies were up to the task. Their ability to play tight man coverage and mix in some zone looks kept Halliday a step or two slow on getting rid of the ball and played a part in the Huskies' pass rush finding success. The defense managed 8 pass break-ups on the day, with 4 coming from the secondary. They also notched a huge interception as the sometimes maligned Greg Ducre came up with a huge pick late in the 4th quarter with the Huskies nursing a 3-point lead, a turnover that would lead to 7 points and control of the game. Marcus Peters, Sean Parker, Will Shamburger and Tre Watson were all over the field, and outside of a a couple of breakdowns (both appeared to be in zone coverage), the secondary did a terrific job of keeping the Cougar passing attack from picking up big plays and held them to a poor 98.8 passing rating on the day. If not for a highly questionable pass interference call against Peters in the 2nd quarter, the Cougs might not have scored that first TD. Grade: A

Special Teams: It was basically a draw in coverage, with the Huskies slightly better on punts and the Cougars slightly better on kickoffs, but credit Travis Coons with nailing both his FG attempts, including a career-best 48 yarder for the Huskies' first points of the game. It must have been a good feeling for him after his high profile miss at the end of regulation last year which allowed the game to go to OT and eventually a bitter Husky loss. Grade: B

Coaching: It's hard not to think sometimes that Sark gets too tense and wound-up in key games, and his team reflects that. While the defense was terrific throughout, the offense was out of sorts in the 1st half and just couldn't sustain drives, suffering key turnovers, poor pass protection and inconsistent run blocking. Maybe some of it was an overload of emotions on Senior Day and a team too wound-up seeking revenge. Whatever it was, you have to give the staff credit for how they came out in the 3rd quarter and took control of the game. The offense finally started to click, especially as they focused more on running more at the flanks of the Cougar front 7 instead of up the gut and KP settled down to have a very efficient game. And even as the game stayed rather tense well into the 4th quarter, the team had settled down, didn't panic and ground out a gritty win against an opponent that lives and dies by their games against the Huskies.

Wilcox had a great gameplan for the Air Raid and his players executed at a high level. For as much as we've critiqued issues with tackling over the course of this season, they did a great job of that yesterday, and the DL was doing the best job of rushing the passer I've seen this year as they employed a lot of twists, stunts and overloads. Give Tosh some credit as his linemen have shown improvement in their rush technique. Grade: B

Hau'oli Kikaha makes his presence felt, Bishop Sankey's screen pass, first half goats, Travis Coons as an All Conference player, Sankey pounding the rock, Halliday's interceptions, the UW pass rush, and WTF is a Keith Price draw? are this week's awards.

Player of the Game: Hau'oli Kikaha. His stats weren't eye popping -- though you can't sniff at two sacks -- but he was around the quarterback on just about every pass, and near the ballcarrier on what seemed like every run and short pass. He was just too good for WSU's offensive line too handle, and the result was that he either got pressure or got held.

Play of the Game: On third and five from their own 20, Steve Sarkisian dialed up a screen pass to Bishop Sankey who took it 40 yards down the sideline. It set up a tying touchdown, and probably settled the UW offense down quite a bit.

Goat of the Game: The first half offense. Penalties on Dexter Charles, turnovers from Keith Price, 5 carries from Bishop Sankey that went for 1 yard or less, sacks, and general horribleness all around.

Stat of the Game: 11/11. The number of times the UW starters have scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the second half. The one time it didn't happen was against Idaho State, when the backups had already been in the game for half a quarter.

Who Stepped Up: Travis Coons. He scored 9 points and had field goals made of 48 and 39 yards. He's been money all year, and should have his name in the conversation for All Conference honors.

The Game Tipped When: When Bishop Sankey. On the next UW drive after the Huskies pulled to 10-10, Bishop Sankey carried 6 times for 38 yards and a touchdown, giving the Dawgs a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

It Was Over When: With the Cougars trailing by just three points, Connor Halliday threw an interception to Greg Ducre, and the Huskies countered with a Keith Price rushing touchdown to go up two scores with 2:08 remaining.

Surprise of the Game: The pressure the UW defense was able to consistently get on Halliday. In addition to Kikaha's two sacks, Cory Littleton, Travis Feeney, and Evan Hudson added one apiece, and Halliday was moved off of his spot all day. The Cougars have been much better at protecting their QB than they were a year ago but Justin Wilcox dialed up a number of different stunts, blitzes, and overloads to get the UW pass rushers some favorable looks.

WTF Moment of the Game: The Price QB draw on third and five on the opening drive, which went for a loss of six. I don't ever want to see Keith Price run that play again, or any play resembling it.

A sluggish first half had Huskies fans worried. Would the football team lose their second consecutive Apple Cup to Washington State?

Nope.

Keith Price led his team to 24 points in the second half to lead his Huskies to a 27-17 victory over Mike Leach's Cougars

The first half started with the ball in Washington's hands, and Price used a 34-yard completion to Austin Sefarian-Jenkins to drive 54 yards for a 48-yard field goal by the leg of Travis Coons. That would be the only point that Washington scored throughout the entire first half. A swarming Washington State defense combined with a pair of turnovers by Keith Price kept the Washington offense in check.

Backup Cyler Miles was warming up on the sidelines, so the health of Price may have been in question.

The defense for the Huskies was good in the first half, limiting Mike Leach's Air Raid offense to ten points, but the lack of a turnover was the biggest, and arguably only, difference of the half. The Cougars showed sideline-to-sideline speed in limiting the horizontal field-stretching WR screens for the Dawgs. Kevin Smith had three catches for 18 yards on the screen plays. John Ross III and Jaydon Mickens were both held without touches. 10-3 Washington State.

The second half opened with Washington State's drive stalling after two first downs. Cougar drives stalling became a pattern for the quarter. Washington and Bishop Sankey took over. The UW offensive starters continued their season-long streak of scoring a touchdown on their first drive of the second half. Backups haven't fared as well, but that doesn't matter as much. If the starting offense is on the field to start the second half, they score touchdowns.

This drive happened as a result of a 40-yard screen to Bishop Sankey and a "Go up and get it" touchdown pass to ASJ. Tie ballgame.

Another Cougar drive stalled, and six Bishop Sankey rushes later, he had broken Napoleon Kaufman's career rushing touchdown record for Washington with 35. His record-breaking run put Washington up 17-10 after Coons kicked the PAT.

Washington's next drive (after a stalled WSU drive) ended after 45 yards on the first incomplete pass of the second half for Keith Price and Coons kicked a field goal to make it a two-score game 20-10. That was the last score of a 17-0 third quarter for Washington.

After some questionable reviews on potential completions for Washington, they were forced to punt. Washington State methodically tossed the ball down the field on their next possession, as Connor Halliday topped 50 pass attempts on the day. On his 55th he dropped a fade to Dom Williams over the head of Marcus Peters for a 5-yard touchdown to bring WSU within a field goal.

After UW wasn't able to get anything going on their next drive, the Cougars started to drive down the field. After a very questionable (read: didn't actually happen) pass interference call on Peters, Halliday remembered he was Halliday and threw an interception to Greg Ducre.

All 37 yards of the ensuing touchdown drive for UW came on the ground, 11 by Price and the rest by the best running back in the country.

A John Timu interception (after he was nearly kicked out for targeting) sealed it.

Keith Price took three knees, and a mostly-full Gatorade tub was dumped on the shoulders of Steve Sarkisian to finish the Apple Cup.

Instant Reactions Dots

After the first half, I was about ready to stick a fork in Sark. If he lost the Apple Cup, that would have been the nail in the coffin. Now, he has earned another year, pending the bowl game.

Travis Feeney's speed made more than just a small impact on the game. The Air Raid offense utilizes a lot of short passes. His speed to get out on the edge and make plays was a big part of why UW was able to come out with the win, in addition to his special teams coverage.

Bishop Sankey could be the best running back Washington has ever had.

Price was under fire for most of the afternoon, but still finished with a good-looking statline: 15-20 for 181 yards with a TD and a pick. his read-option touchdown was the true backbreaker. His mobility to get a few yards on broken plays were big in keeping the offense going on drives.

Sark is not Seven-Win-Steve any more.

The Huskies played very poorly in the first half, and are lucky to only be trailing 10-3

The story of the first half was turnovers. They lead to all 10 of WSU's points, and erased a potential scoring opportunity for the Huskies.

Keith Price has not played well, but his receivers have not done a great job of getting open, resulting in a lot of scrambles for Price. This is when you'd like to see Sark go to the horizontal passing game (which has worked in the limited chances he's given it today) to get chunks of yards. Jaydon Mickens has no catches, which tells you how often they've done that.

Bishop Sankey has a very quiet 61 yards rushing, but the Huskies have been stuffed on too many runs for the run game to really get going like they'd like it to. The first half pass to rush ratio is a misleading 8:21, as many called passes have resulted in Price carries.

Hau'oli Kikaha was the player of the game in the first half, getting a couple of sacks. He and Cory Littleton are simply too quick for WSU's tackles, who are having to hold and grab to compensate.

The Huskies played almost as poorly as they could have (especially on offense) and are fortunate that they trail by just one score.

The Huskies enter the Apple Cup on an unacceptable 1 game losing streak, which they are looking to snap.

The Huskies enter the game having won 3 of their last 4 games, as well as 3 of the last 4 Apple Cups. The Cougars are riding a two game win streak, but have been mostly uncompetitive with the upper half of the conference.

WSU may be fighting for their bowl lives today though, as even though they've hit bowl eligibility, they're no sure thing to be invited to the postseason if they lose today. With the Pac-12 filling with more bowl teams than slots, the teams on the bottom (WSU and OSU) have already begun campaigning to be selected over the other. It's a game that WSU players, coaches, and fans alike will be hungry to win -- even moreso than usual -- as the Cougs try to get to their first postseason appearance in a decade.

Note:

Last week I mentioned that the Huskies had been outscored by the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis 115 to 65 in their past three meetings ... well, in last week's game alone the Huskies dramatically closed that deficit to 142 to 134, a margin of 8 points ... BALANCE RESTORED!!!

History

It's only his second year as a head coach over in the Palouse, but Mike Leach is thoroughly annoying me. Where are the good old days where we could practically pencil in a win with Paul Wulff at the helm? That aside, a relevant Apple Cup is good for both these teams. Currently, the Dawgs lead this series, the 106th if its kind, 67-32-6.

Last year sucked. I remember I was building a deck at the time, in South Denver, and it was butt-cold outside. At the end of the third quarter I had decided to call it quits for the day. I had brought my laptop and hacked into the homeowner's wifi so I could listen to the game while I hammered away on the porch ... when I got home, which was 15 minutes away, I went to check the score. I left work happily humming since the Huskies were up 28-10, and when I got home ... the score was 28 to 28 ...

Offense

Will the offense pick up where it left off last week? How many yards will Bishop get this week ... and will it be enough to break Dillon's record? How many backs will break 100 yards this week? Will ASJ continue to be a beast at pass blocking? How is Micah Hatchie doing? Will the O-line continue to be awesome ... for a second consecutive week?

Defense

Can the defense defend the pass again this week? How many picks will Halliday gift us? What will the pass rush look like? How many sacks will Kikaha get? QB hurries? QB hits? Forced interceptions? Will Marcus Peters be able to line up against the entire platter of Cougar Wideouts at the same time?

Miscellaneous

Can we please get this game over with so I can forget last year's game?

Conclusion

Man I am excited for this game. Not only is it relevant, since both teams are going bowling this season, but it's the Apple Cup. I remember in kindergarten I heard about the Apple Cup for the first time ever. The class was supposed to pick who was going to win the game by drawing a picture of the winning mascot ... since my two best friends were on opposing sides, I decided to go with whichever buddy gave me the coolest snack.

I'm sad to say that the Coug gave me a twinkie, and the Husky had already eaten his. Naturally I voted for the Cougs. That game happened to be the '89 version, and the game turned out a win for the Cougs ... however, the worst part about that ordeal, other than taking that picture of a Crimson and Gray Cougar to my dad who hated the Cougs, was the fact that during lunch my Coug buddy and I defaced all of the Husky drawing with a big L ... all I can say is that it's a good thing there's no detention for Kindergarten ... Needless to say, that's the last time I chose the Cougs in the Apple cup.

I have mixed feelings about the outcome, as far as the score and winner goes. I want to say the Dawgs are going to run away with the game, but that just doesn't feel right in my gut. No, a much closer win seems to be in store. So, I say that the Huskies win by 63. Final Score: UW 70 WSU 7
