Championship Saturday College Football Rooting Guide & Open Thread

Washington is in. But how high can they climb?

What a freaking game. Last night was an amazing experience. And if you decide that you need to take a little bit of a break from college football to let it all soak in, I’d completely understand. Or...

Instead you could sit on the couch and watch an entire day worth of title games. Not all of them are going to be as exciting as last night. But if everything goes Washington’s way tomorrow then they could find themselves as the #1 overall seed come Sunday morning. That’s incredibly unlikely but a person can dream. And that’s what the rooting guide is all about.

SUGGESTED VIEWING/ROOTING GUIDE (all times PT)

9:00 AM: #18 Oklahoma State (9-3) at #7 Texas (11-1), ABC

DraftKings Betting Line: Texas -15

This game goes way down in importance for Washington given that they took care of business last night. If Texas wins they get to stay alive for College Football Playoff consideration. And I’m okay with that. They had a blowout win against Texas Tech to end the year but looked very shaky for a while before that. I’d feel pretty okay matching up with them for the second straight postseason. And I’d much rather play them than Ohio State. So let’s say Go Longhorns!

1:00 PM: #8 Alabama (11-1) vs. #1 Georgia (12-0), CBS

DraftKings Betting Line: Georgia -5

This is one of the games where who we were going to root for completely flipped based on last night’s game. Had Washington lost then we’d be rooting hard for Georgia to knock Alabama out of consideration. Now though, the Dawgs are assured of getting ranked ahead of Alabama no matter what and a Tide win would allow Washington to leapfrog Georgia in the CFP rankings (or potentially knock Georgia all the way out). Getting Georgia out of the way is a good thing. Moving up to #2 doesn’t do a ton but it would downshift the first round matchup from having to play Michigan in the Rose Bowl to potentially Florida State minus Jordan Travis. Sounds good to me.

5:00 PM: #16 Iowa (10-2) vs. #2 Michigan (12-0), FOX

DraftKings Betting Line: Michigan -22

Listen. It would be great if Iowa won this game. But it isn’t going to happen. But if it did...

No. But...

No.

Okay.

5:00 PM: #14 Louisville (10-2) at #4 Florida State (12-0), ABC

DraftKings Betting Line: Florida State -1.5

A win by Florida State almost certainly keeps them in the Final Four of the CFP rankings. It’s hard to imaging the committee not letting in a 13-0 Florida State team when there isn’t another power conference unbeaten to take their spot. Personally, I’m fine with Florida State making the bracket without their star quarterback. So a narrow FSU win where they don’t look very good but provide a potential 1st round matchup for Washington sounds perfect to me.
