Transfer Portal

While many players have already announced their decision to enter the Transfer Portal, it doesn't officially open up until Monday. (That means that teams can't officially contact players until then.) The question that I have for Husky fans is where they think DeBoer should prioritize when looking at the Transfer Portal.

We know the players who will have no more eligibility, but we don't know who else might be leaving or transferring, so that is going to hamper things a bit. But, here is a position-by-position breakdown from what we know now:

  • QB: There are 3 QB's on the roster with eligibility remaining, plus one (semi) commitment for 2023. If any of the current QB's leave (like Penix for the NFL), expect DeBoer to get another transfer QB.
  • RB: UW currently has 7 RB's on scholarship. One (Taulapapa) will be leaving for sure. UW has one commitment for 2023. If some of the current RB's transfer, it's possible that DeBoer would add another-although that isn't a guarantee since they'd still have 6.
  • WR: There are currently 8 scholarship WR's. And there are 2 commits for 2023. If someone leaves, I'd expect DeBoer to add another; and he could add another even if one doesn't leave.
  • TE: There are 5 TE's on scholarship, and all will have eligibility next year. DeBoer has said that he wants to add a TE; whether that is a high school recruit or a transfer is to be determined.
  • OL: UW has 16 scholarship OL; 3 of them are out of eligibility after this year. There are 5 commits for 2023. If that stands, UW will have 18 next year.
  • DL: UW has 9 currently, but that includes Peihopa who may or may not still be with the team next year (currently suspended). All of the rest will have eligibility next year. UW will be adding 2 in the 2023 class.
  • Edge: There are 7 scholarship Edge players. Martin will be out of eligibility. They have just 1 Edge recruit for 2023 so far.
  • LB: UW has 7 LB's on scholarship. Two of them (Bright and Moll) will be out of eligibility. UW has 2 LB commits for 2023.
  • DB: UW has 16 scholarship DB's currently. Two of them (Cook and Perryman) will be out of eligibility. UW has 4 commits for 2023.
  • Specialists: UW has 3 specialists on scholarship. Two of them (Henry and Ryan) will be out of eligibility. UW has no commits for 2023, but two walkons essentially started for the team this year, so there should be an expectation that they will be put on scholarship.

Based on that here are my thoughts on transfer priorities:

  1. QB is a no-brainer if Penix leaves.
  2. LB. They could try to get another high school recruit, but with 2 high school commits already, they may want to get some experienced players that can contribute right away.
  3. Edge. I think that they are going to try to add a high school recruit at this position, but if someone leaves they may have to add a transfer (if they can find one).
  4. TE. If they can't find a high school recruit, I expect them to find a transfer.
  5. DB. With 2 starters leaving and mostly young guys at the position, I think that they would take an experienced DB if they can find one. And it is possible that they could add a high school recruit or a JC to the 2023 class-possibly 2.
  6. WR. If Odunze or McMillan leave, they shouldn't have any trouble getting a good WR out of the Transfer Portal. But I'm not sure if they would prefer a transfer over getting another high school recruit (like Lyons).
  7. DL. No need to add a transfer unless a couple of the current ones leave or they find a very good one in the Transfer Portal.
  8. RB. No need to add a transfer unless a couple of the current ones leave or they find a very good one in the Transfer Portal. There is also the chance that they could add a JC RB since they have offered one.
  9. Specialist. Unless they find a very good one in the Transfer Portal, I'm not expecting them to bring one in.
  10. OL. No need to add a transfer unless a several of the current ones (that have eligibility) leave or they find a very good one in the Transfer Portal.

Some will likely disagree with my priorities. Comment below with your priorities, why, and (more importantly) how they would fit with the current roster.
