Washington’s road to the 2021 WCWS far tougher than even the most pessimistic person could have imagined.
Picked to earn a national seed between 7 and 11 by basically every projection, the Huskies (41-11, 18-5 Pac-12) were named the #16 overall seed for the upcoming NCAA Softball Tournament, barely high enough to bring next weekend’s regional round to Seattle, never mind a Super Regional.
Just to get to a Super Regional, Washington will most likely have to get through Michigan (36-6 Big Ten). In one of just a couple of leagues that did not allow non-conference games this season.
The other two visitors actually both came to Husky Softball Stadium on the same weekend at the end of non-conference play: Seattle U (29-19, 11-5 WAC) and the Huskies’ first-round opponent, Portland State (15-24, 8-10 Big Sky). That game is scheduled for 7:30pm PT on Fri, May 21, with Seattle U and Michigan opening the action at 5pm.
The winner of the Seattle Regional will advance to play the winner of the Norman Regional, which includes top-seeded Oklahoma, Wichita State, Texas A&M and Morgan State. Full bracket is here
A more in-depth preview will be published later this week.
