Husky coaches have been busy on the recruiting trail and recently several Husky recruits included UW in their narrowed down list of schools. Here is a rundown of what has happened this last week:
4 star defensive back Steven Ortiz from Desert Edge HS, AZ recently narrowed his list of schools to a top 5. Ortiz, who is rated as the 17th best cornerback in the 2021 class, included Oregon, Penn State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, and UW. The Huskies offered Ortiz earlier this year and ever since they offered him they have been on his short list of schools. Listed at around 5’10” and 170 pounds Ortiz is a prototypical boundary corner who does have a similar skill set and mindset to former Husky Byron Murphy. The Huskies appear to be in a good spot for Ortiz who plans to commit on August 1st.

3 Star cornerback Phillip Riley from IMG Academy (however he is originally from the Seattle area) is another defensive player who included UW in his narrowed down list. Listed at 6’0” and around 190 pounds Riley has the ability to play safety or cornerback and 247sports rates him as the 31st best cornerback currently (though it sounds like his ranking will be bumped up soon). With 38 offers including offers from Clemson, Notre Dame, and Penn State the Huskies have been doing a great job in recruiting Riley. His top 7 list of schools included Notre Dame, Penn State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Texas, Virginia Tech, and UW. The Huskies have an advantage of being ““the home town school”, and Riley plays with FSP for 7 on 7 ball. FSP has several other Husky targets playing for them including Ortiz, QB Sam Huard, DT JT Tuimoloau, and WR Troy Franklin (to name a few). It sounds like Riley is looking to commit prior to his senior season and the Huskies hope they can get him on campus unofficially to help bolster their chances.
I'm very Blessed to be in this position and thank you to all the colleges who have given me these amazing opportunities!!!— PhilipRiley2021 (@Riley18Philip) April 4, 2020

4 star linebacker/running back Julien Simon from Lincoln HS, WA is another player that recently trimmed his list of suitors down. Listed at around 6’2” and 220 pounds Simon is one of the top players in the State of Washington in 2021 and 247sports currently has him rated as the 99th best player in the country. With offers from around the country Simon listed his top 8 schools which included Oregon, Texas, Stanford, USC, Cal, Michigan, ASU, and UW. The Huskies were initially recruiting Simon as a linebacker but it sounds like he would prefer to play on offense and Husky coaches have told him he will be given a shot to play running back if he were to come to UW. The Huskies look like they are doing well with Simon however he will probably wait until later this fall to narrow his list further and commit to a school. Coach Jimmy Lake is hoping he can put up a fence in the state of Washington starting with the 2021 class and landing Simon would be a step in the right direction. Simon also plays with FSP for 7 on 7 which should help the Huskies chances with Simon.
The Huskies also extended a new offer this week to a familiar name. 2022 Tight end Ryan Otton from Tumwater HS, WA was extended an offer from Jimmy Lake and the Huskies would love to add another Otton to their tight end room (his brother Cade is a tight end with the Huskies). Listed at 6’6” and around 225 pounds Otton has offers UW and also UNLV and Oregon State. Otton looks like he will be one of the top players in the state for the 2022 class.
That is all for now and as always follow me @asieverkropp.
