Husky fans- I know it’s slow on the recruiting front right now, however I was able to catch up with 3 star cornerback Zakhari Spears from Loyola HS, CA. The Huskies offered Spears last year and were able to land his commitment earlier this year. Here is a bit of what he had to say:
How was your visit to UW?
It was awesome!! Cornelius Washington and JG (Justin Glenn) did a great job showing me and my dad around, I got a chance to see Seattle for a couple of days before the visit too so I really got the whole PNW experience. It was everything and more I was hoping it to be. I met with the strength staff and they were really nice guys and you can tell how passionate everyone is about being a Dawg.
What about UW made you decide to commit to UW?
They didn’t just recruit me then offer. They built a relationship with my family, and that made me feel comfortable making the decision. The number of players they send to the NFL was very impressive as well. And to top it off, you see Myles Bryant, got developed, worked extremely hard, and now he’s in the draft. No way I could pass on it. And then, of course, you have the academics, things like the Foster School of Business that really set you up for life after football. I knew it was early, but when its the right fit, its a great feeling to commit and focus on my senior year.
What other schools offered and were recruiting you?
Maryland, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah, San Jose State, Washington State, Arizona State, Cal, Kansas, BYU and Texas Southern all offered me. Other schools that recruited me but did not offer me: USC, UCLA, Texas, Notre Dame, Stanford, Penn State, LSU, and others.
What position is UW recruiting you at?
Cornerback
How would you describe yourself as a football player, and what are your strengths as a player?
I think that I’m a physical big corner, this discourages QBs from throwing jump balls my way. I give max effort every play so chasing people down comes easy. I can cover any receiver and then come down-hill to make plays against the run.
You are active on Twitter recruiting guys, who are you after the most to try and get to commit to UW?
I’m looking to make the best impression I can on a couple of guys to name a few, like Troy Franklin, JD Coffey, and Owen Prentice but I talk to Steven Ortiz the most.
Spears is rated by 247sports as the 23rd best corner in the country and is listed at 6’2” and around 180 pounds. Landing Spears Early was a big pickup for the Dawgs. Here are some of his highlights:
That is all for now and as always follow me @asieverkropp and Zakhari at @SpearsZakhari
