From Hamburg to California to Montlake, edge rusher Maurice Heims is a Husky

HSV, St. Pauli... UW?

An interesting OLB project has made it official — Maurice Heims has signed for UW after a football journey took him from Germany to Santa Margarita Catholic to, soon, Montlake.

Heims committed to the Huskies over offers from Arizona State, Colorado, Penn State, Boise State, and others back in June.

While Hamburg has two famous football clubs, that’d be for the other football. Otherwise, my only experience with the gridiron type in that city is a drunk dude at a party telling me he had played for an American football club and that Tim Tebow was his favorite player (it was 2013, so... I mean, still a bad opinion, but...).

Until now.

Originally from Germany’s historic Hanseatic capitol, Maurice Heims moved to southern California to play high school football but only got a full junior year in before his senior season was postponed due to COVID. Subsequently, we know very little about him other than A) he’s physically ideal for an edge rusher and B) he’s a project.

Regarding point (A), Heims is listed on 247Sports as 6’5”, 235 lbs (he lists himself on Twitter as 6’6”, 240 lbs). While it’d be shocking to see him make any impact without at least a couple years in the program first, it’s impossible to deny that his physical characteristics are tailor-made for a pass rusher.

Whatever his career holds for UW, an argument could be made that Heims might have both the lowest floor and the highest ceiling of all the Dawgs’ 2021 commits. Here’s the most recent of his California highlights:

However his Washington career goes, at least he knows better than to think Tim Tebow's really good. That alone makes Heims my favorite football player to come out of my favorite city in Germany.

Do good things, don’t do bad things, and bow down to Washington.
