Welcome to the first Saturday of the season with no undefeated PAC 12 teams. With Cal’s home loss to ASU last night, there are none left. And it’s still September.
Yeesh.
I for one am glad that Cal’s playoff hopes are done. My aging heart couldn’t handle the intrigue of it all. Thankfully, we have a slate of games around the nation today that all have CFP implications. Here is your Washington Huskies rooting guide for Week 5:
Rooting Guide
Northwestern at #8 Wisconsin
Root for: Northwestern
The Jonathan Taylor Heisman campaign is officially under way. It would be nice if Pat Fitzgerald could slow it down today.
#18 Virginia at #10 Notre Dame
Root for: Virginia
Notre Dame’s close road loss to Georgia last week definitely was worthy of respect. If we want them bounced out of the mix for good, they are going to need to get hung with one more loss. Virginia may not be as good as their ranking, but they are good enough to do this task. Maybe.
Ole Miss at #2 Alabama
Root for: Cal
Cal beat Ole Miss last weekend. Ole Miss plays Alabama this weekend. ASU beat Cal last night. So ... if A is greater than B and B is greater than C would not C be greater than A? I’m going with it.
Nebraska at #5 Ohio State
Root for: the team in red
No, the other team in red.
WSU at #19 Utah
Root for: something that tops the greatest Coug It of all time
Because we love chaos in college football. Am I right?
Upset Picks
NC State at Florida State (-7)
Who in their right might is giving Free Willy Taggert seven points? I get that NC State hasn’t played anybody and that this is the ACC ... but still. Take the seven. You might even take NC State outright.
#18 Virginia at #10 Notre Dame (-12.5)
This is a pretty rich line for two teams that are probably more evenly matched than Brian Kelley would hope. I’m not going so far as to pick the Cavaliers, but I do like them to cover.
#5 Ohio State (-18.5) at Nebraska
Last I checked, Ohio State QB Justin Fields hasn’t played a road game. And his first will be in Lincoln. In a game that Nebraska head coach Scott Frost probably had circled back in February. Expect the Huskers to throw the kitchen sink at the Buckeyes and cover that spread.
Mississippi State at #7 Auburn (-11)
Auburn is probably the most overrated of all the top 10 teams now that Michigan is out. The problem is that Bo Nix is ... well ... still a freshman QB. Give me the Bulldogs in the straight up upset.
Middle Tennessee State at #14 Iowa (-24)
The Hawkeyes barely ever score 24 points total in a game. Winning by that much seems like a big stretch. This looks like an ATS opportunity.
