It’s the calm before the storm as teams wrap up their non-conference schedules

NCAA Football: Alabama vs Duke Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Here we are in the middle of September and the Huskies have yet to post a win against an FBS team. The last time that UW went through the first two weeks of the season without a win against an FBS team was the ill-fated 2008 season. Take that as you will.

Unfortunately, even a big win over Hawaii will do little to restore the faith of Husky fans in the prospects for this team. Despite the fact that - at least on paper - the Dawgs boast their deepest and most talented roster of the Petersen era, the sheer ugliness of the Cal loss has poisoned the well. It’ll take time - and more college football - for the damage to Husky fan confidence to be undone.

Thankfully, more football is exactly what is on tap for today. Before we get to UW / Hawaii tonight, we have a full slate of CFB to wade through today. Unfortunately, and strangely, there are no games of ranked opponents squaring off. The sport has benefited from some great matchups in the first two weeks. Today might be a bit of a let down in that regard. But there are still some good games to watch.

Upset Alert

#2 Alabama (-25.5) at South Carolina

You have to go back all the way to 2012 and a road trip to Arkansas to find the last time that the Tide went on the road in the first three weeks of the season and won a game by more than 7 points. Thus, a 25.5 road favorite line seems a bit shocking, no matter what you think of Tua Tagovailoa, Jerry Jeudy and the rest of that ‘Bama offense.

On the flip side, you have the remarkably uplifting story of Ryan Hilinski, younger brother to the late WSU QB Tyler Hilinski and his ascension to the starting QB role for South Carolina. That plus the fact that the last time these two teams played ... all the way back in 2010 (Esssss-Eeeeeeee-Seeeeeee, y’all) ... the Gamecocks handed Nick Saban his only loss of 14 points or more against an SEC team during his Alabama era.

Take the points and enjoy seeing if the Gamecocks can pull this one off straight up.

Arizona State at #18 Michigan State (-14)

This is another one that is more about the points than the straight up upset. The Spartans bring to the table a great defense. But, you know, what? Herm Edwards brings to East Lansing a decent one of his own. That plus what I would expect to be a very run-heavy offense behind the shoulder pads of Eno Benjamin should have the affect of dramatically slowing down the scoreboard. I could see this one going very much like last year’s game where the Sun Devils upset the Spartans 16-13 in Tempe.

14 points? Get out of here.

#8 Florida (-8) at Kentucky

Look, I know that this iteration of Kentucky is not the same flashing team that we all saw over the last two seasons. It’s lost some great personnel and appears to be sinking back into the mediocrity that this basketball school has traditionally displayed on Saturdays in September.

That said, I think Florida is the biggest fraud in the top 10. Seeing them get 8 points on the road against a team with a good coaching staff seems absurd. In fact, I have a feeling that the Gators are going to be lucky to get out of this road trip with any kind of win. I think that they will not.

I’ll pick the straight up Wildcat win in this one.

Others on Upset Alert

I’m not picking upsets in any other games, but there are a few others that warrant some attention. I think #1 Clemson will struggle on the road against Syracuse (who got their doors blown off by Maryland last weekend). USC is a 4.5 point favorite over a physical BYU team in a game that might not go as planned. Stanford is in a great position to upset #20 UCF. I also think UW may not be as good as the spread against Hawaii. All of those are upset alert games today.

This post will serve as your open thread. Enjoy some football.
