QB Jake Haener Leaves UW Football

Haener lost a hotly contested battle to be UW’s starter in 2019

NCAA Football: North Dakota at Washington Jennifer Buchanan-USA TODAY Sports

Washington QB Jake Haener has left the football program after losing a hotly contested battle with Jacob Eason to be UW’s opening day starter.

Below is the announcement that came from Washington’s sports information department:

“Sophomore quarterback Jake Haener has elected to leave the Washington football program, effective immediately.”

Short and bittersweet.

This decision appears final and will likely allow Haener the opportunity to preserve at least two years of eligibility. While not guaranteed, he is almost certain of being eligible for some or all of next season in the same way that Missouri QB Kelly Bryant earned eligibility following his departure from Clemson last season. It’s possible he could gain eligibility this year but that would require a rarely granted waiver from the NCAA.
