It may not have been the sexy addition that we were all hoping for when the woof went out but the Huskies received a commitment this morning from JUCO punter Triston Brown per RealDawg.com. He measures in at 6’2 and 200 pounds out of Walnut, California and currently attends Mt. San Antonio College. Brown was a freshman this past season but, similar to incoming JUCO OL Corey Luciano, could take a redshirt this season and then join the team in 2020 with 3 years of eligibility.
Senior Joel Whitford is the only scholarship punter on the roster so a replacement in 2020 was needed. Walk-on Race Porter filled in as the backup when Whitford missed time this last year but he’s a junior and if the Huskies moved him to scholarship after Whitford graduates it would be only as a one year fill-in. Van Soderberg is also a junior and listed as a place kicker/punter on the official Husky roster but it seems unlikely he would be viewed as anything other than an emergency option so bringing someone else in makes sense.
Chris Sailer is known as the authority on punting and kicking prospects and he had great things to say in his write-up of Triston. He has Brown rated as the #1 2020 punter prospect in the country with averages of 45+ yards and 4.5+ seconds of hang time. Brown also won the junior college punting competition this summer in Vegas.
