One of the consequences of the Huskies sitting at 5-3 and pretty much out of any discussion related to the College Football Playoff, the Rose Bowl or even the division championship is that just about everything else in college football has lost its intrigue. There are simply no consequences for UW left out there should team A beat team B today. Those other games might as well be Korean Team Badmitton matchups for all of the interest that present to the average Washington fan at this point.
No suspense. No intrigue. No impact.
It’s a shame too. I wish that I could muster up some enthusiasm for the games this weekend as there are some really good ones. A few that really stand out include:
#9 Auburn at #2 LSU - are the Tigers for real? And is this an indirect measuring stick of how good Oregon is?
#13 Wisconsin at #3 Ohio State - can Wisconsin bounce back after last week’s upset? And is Ohio State the true #1 team in the nation?
Maryland at #17 Minnesota - will the Gophers keep their undefeated streak going with Wisconsin - a long forgotten rivalry - on the near horizon?
#8 Notre Dame at #19 Michigan - Kelly vs Harbaugh ... need I say more?
Washington State at #11 Oregon - will the Ducks overlook the Cougs in a matchup that will really stress secondary depth for Oregon?
Whether you ... or I ... choose to watch any of these games is now a decision that is solely a function of the other options you have available to you today. The good news here is that we can go back to just being fans however we like to do the whole fan thing. We can sit down in front of Auburn and LSU today if we like and just appreciate what “good” football looks like relative to what we’ve been seeing out of the PAC and out of UW. Or we can go to the neighbor’s Halloween party and let the games just exist in the background as part of the overall ambiance of the event. Or we can simply choose to not watch at all. 100% guilt free.
Be the fan you were meant to be.
So, with that, I’ve got no interest in college football today. Sure, I’ll keep my eye on the games and make sure that I’m clued into things as I know that I can never truly detatch. But I’m invested in nothing. And I’ve got other things to spend three hours on. Thus, no rooting guide today. No upset picks. No intriguing analysis. Just the games and an open thread...just in case a few of you need it.
Enjoy. And see you next week.
