Midweek Debate: Four games in, who has been the Huskies’ top offensive player?

It’s been an uneven start for the Washington Huskies’ offense in 2018. UW is 82nd in scoring offense and 55th in total offense nationally. However, instead of three tuneup games against inferior competition to sharpen their execution and roll up big numbers, the Huskies have played two of the top three scoring defenses in the country and an ASU defense that ranks 30th nationally.

The return of the downfield pass (and big plays in the passing game) has been the story so far from a positive standpoint. Some really poor plays against pressure have dominated the negative narrative.

Let’s look at some players who have stood out so far:

Aaron Fuller (22 rec, 367 yards, 16.7 YPR, 1 TD)

To me, this guy has been brilliant. He catches everything near him, reads coverage unbelievably well, and is really in sync with QB Jake Browning. His improvement from year one as a freshman, to year two where he began to emerge, to this season where he is playing at an All Pac-12 level has been a huge boon to the Husky offense.

Ty Jones (10 rec, 202 yards, 20.2 YPR, 4 TD)

I knew Jones had great ball skills, but he has been super impressive coming up with tough catches. He is a physical player who has been hit and miss with his blocking, but that will come with more experience. Jones has turned out so far to be everything we had hoped for in a big receiving target for Browning.

Myles Gaskin (83 carries, 357 yards, 4.3 YPC, 2 TD)

It’s early season, so it’s not quite Myles Gaskin time yet. Slow starts to the season are his thing (and the offensive line’s thing), so I would expect Gaskin to be more of a factor in this discussion four weeks from now. He has not been fantastic in reading blocks so far this year, has had some gaffes in pass protection, and to my surprise has not been a factor in the receiving game with only 24 yards receiving on the season. Right now, I can’t call him an offensive MVP for the Dawgs, but a month from now could be a totally different story.
