7-foot-4 Center Riley Sorn to join UW MBB

The incredibly tall center from Richland is going to be a Dawg

NCAA Basketball: Washington at Kansas Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

The 7-foot-4 center from Richland will become the third big man to join the Huskies in the Class of 2018. Riley Sorn was named 2nd team all state after averaging 16.6 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game last season for the Richland Bombers leading them to the state semifinals. He was rated as a 3-star recruit per the 247 sports composite rankings and the 9th ranked player in the state although he was unranked by 247 themselves.

All indications are that Sorn will join the team as a walk-on rather than taking the last open scholarship. However, if that information changes then we’ll update this report. The school can’t talk about a recruit before he enrolls or has signed scholarship papers so it’s unlikely we hear anything directly from the UW unless he does take up the 13th scholarship.

He narrowed down his college choice in March to Saint Mary’s and Washington but hadn’t given any kind of public indication of his final decision. It appears Richland had a ceremony for all their senior student athletes where Sorn announced the decision.

It’s not every day that you can get a walk-onof Sorn’s size or ability but it’s a unique situation. Sorn is rumored to be extremely dedicated to his academics and UW has an excellent program that he wants and so he’s willing to stay local and pay for a premium education rather than going to another school for free.

All of that said, Sorn is incredibly raw as a prospect and is not ready to set foot on the court in a Pac-12 game yet. But if he can get a little meat on his bones and work on his offensive game then he could be a useful piece. This is a no lose situation for Coach Hopkins. Hop gets a giant body to try to coach up at center and if he works out then you open up a scholarship for him and if not then he’s happy with his degree.

Sorn would be the second walk on joining Washington in the class of 2018 along with California SG Jonah Geron.
