Congratulations, football fans. You’ve made it to the regular season.
Everything is better once you get here. The weather feels more like football. The brats taste more like football. The buzz sounds more like football. The beers and sodas drink more like football.
To make it even sweeter, our Dawgs are currently ranked #7 in the country and squarely in the middle of the race for college football’s final four. These are good times not only because our football team is so relevant but also because we all have reason to be invested in what is happening outside of our own football borders.
Let me apologize in advance to your lawns. It looks like they will once again be neglected this weekend. Let’s jump in to our Week 4 rooting guide.
Rooting Guide and Games of Note
#8 Michigan at Purdue
Root for: Purdue (duh)
I have a strange feeling about this one. In theory, Michigan ought to win this handily. But Purdue has been better offensively this year than most people realize and they might be able to hang with a sluggish Michigan offense. If the Boilermakers open the fourth within single digita, watch out.
#20 Florida at Kentucky
Root for: Kentucky (just for fun)
This one is a full on upset alert candidate. Why? The combination of a very poor Florida offense and a better-than-you-think Kentucky defense (in particular, rush defense) leads me to believe that this will be a low scoring affair. That scenario favors Kentucky at home. A second Florida loss would certainly drop them from the top 25.
#16 TCU at #6 Oklahoma State
Root for: TCU
Believe it or not, it was ten years ago today that Ted Gundy gave us this epic rant:
That never gets old. College football is awesome.
As to the game, this one is obvious. Mason Rudolph is off to a great start for the season. His efforts have led OKST to a jumo over UW in the latest AP rankings. A loss to TCU at home would put a big L on their ledger and give UW an edge over a clear competitor for one of those final four spots.
#5 USC at Cal
Root for: USC
Hanging a loss on another division rival puts UW one step closer to the North. A strong USC could make for a better Championship win opportunity. #FightOn
#4 Penn State at Iowa
Root for: Iowa
This game is probably more evenly matched than what you think. Penn State’s offense has feasted on big plays this season, but hasn’t actually been as efficient as some of the other top offenses in the NCAA. If Iowa could catch a few breaks with turnovers and / or special teams, then an upset is not out of the question. I don’t like this one as much as I do the Kentucky match, but I’ll be watching.
