Lorenzo Romar has found a new home as the Associate Head Coach for Sean Miller at the University of Arizona. The university made the official announcement on Saturday.
Romar was let go last month by the University of Washington after 15 years coaching at his alma mater. He replaces Joe Pasternack on Miller’s staff.
Mike Hopkins, a longtime Syracuse assistant coach at his alma mater, was named the head coach of the Huskies less than a week after Romar’s dismissal.
ESPN touts Romar as an “elite recruiter” with strong West Coast ties which will help the Arizona program. We know Romar’s recruiting have stepped up over the years which culminated in securing Markelle Fultz and Michael Porter, Jr. As we know, Romar’s dismissal set a domino effect where most of his incoming recruiting class for 2017 has decided to go elsewhere.
Unfortunately, we know Romar’s recruiting did not equate to success on the court.
It’s interesting that Romar decided to find a job so soon after receiving a $3.2 million buyout from the University of Washington. More interesting is that he’s coming back in an college assistant position.
