What’s this? It’s almost National Signing Day and yet we already have one guy who’s been signed for over a month already? That’s right, fools, because JuCo to FBS signing rules are different in some way that I could elaborate on, but won’t. No, it’s not because I’m not intimately acquainted with how JuCo signing rules differ from signing high school prospects, what absurd conjecture you’re throwing about there!
Although he signed with Washington by way of Santa Barbara City College, Joel Whitford comes from the same program in Australia that produced the last four years’ worth of Ray Guy winners in Mitch Wishnowsky and Tom Hackett. Prokick Australia has alumni littered across the FCS, FBS, CFL, and NFL, and by all means we should be looking forward to Whitford joining those ranks.
Whitford played at Santa Barbara in 2015 and then sat out 2016 to preserve eligibility at the NCAA level and could start sooner rather than later. He committed back in June and has been drama free on the recruiting front since.
Upon signing in December, Whitford gained notice for his particularly Australian (read: funnier than you) announcement of his NLI to Washington:
Here’s some highlights from his freshman year at SBCC, courtesy of Hudl. His rugby technique combined with a deceptive hangtime should give the coverage team plenty to work with:
Do good things, don’t do bad things, and bow down to Washington.
