Two Pac 12 offensive juggernauts take the stage this week, as the UW Huskies travel down to Berkeley, CA to take on the California Golden Bears.

NCAA Football: Washington at Cal Jennifer Buchanan-USA TODAY Sports

Berkeley, CA - The Huskies head out to Berkeley, CA to take on the California Bears in a battle between two of the most prolific offenses in the Pac 12. Unfortunately for the Bears, as prolific as their offense has been, their defense had been the complete antithesis. Check out the numbers ... you’ll see what I mean.

History

These two teams have been playing each other for quite a while. According to my “sources” (which would be the game notes at the bottom of the page) the Huskies and the Golden Bears have played each other every season since the league was founded, back in 1916. That’s a lot of years. The Dawgs hold the edge, well it’s less like an edge and more like a 14 game lead, at 53-39-4.

Last year the Bears, led by some guy name Jared Goff, were able to hold off the Huskies on a last minute interception, winning 30-24.

Before that, the Huskies were able to win in 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, and 2009. The year before that was the year the Huskies decided they didn’t want to beat anyone. In short, the Dawgs have gone 7-2 since 2007, which is pretty good, just in case you were wondering.

Numbers

1 - the number of times UW scored less than 35 points in a game this season (in case you forgot, that was last week against Utah).

4 - Cal’s rank in the NATION in passing yards per game.

4 - UW’s rank in the NATION in points scored per game

4.59 - The number of yards the Huskies are surrendering per play.

8 - Cal’s rank in the NATION in yards of total offense per game (it’s 536.5 in case you were wondering).

10 - UW’s rank in the NATION in passing yards surrendered each game, and average yards surrendered per play.

41.3 - Cal’s average points scored per game this season.

46.1 - UW’s average points scored per game this season.

62 - The number of passing play of over 15 yards Cal has on the season.

Putting it all Together

This looks to be a good matchup for the Huskies, as they have one of the stoutest secondaries in the conference and the country. However, they have yet to face a team that wants to throw the ball as much as they Bears do.

You’d probably like to think that the Huskies will be able to handle it, but that remains to be seen, at least this season.
