The junior defensive back lost his starting job this season

The timing of the announcement was curious, but the result is all the same. Washington DB Darren Gardenhire announced on his Instagram Monday morning that he intends to transfer from the University of Washington.

Gardenhire was a starter in his sophomore season in 2015 but fell behind Kevin King on the depth chart and slowly lost playing time to younger players such as Austin Joyner and Taylor Rapp. Despite not starting defensively, Gardenhire was still an important cog on special teams, working as a gunner to cover punts and making important stops in kick coverage as well.

There is no official announcement as to whether Gardenhire is going to finish the season with the team. The statement, “I will no longer be continuing my career here at the University of Washington,” seems to hint that he won’t. As of this writing there isn’t any official word from the program or from Chris Petersen.

Gardenhire finished his Husky career with three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a fumble forced. We wish you luck wherever you end up, Darren.
