Washington is looking to finish the 2016 recruiting cycle strong and they are well on their way to achieving that goal as UW coaches have just secured the commitment of Byron Murphy. The 4-star Athlete announced his decision during a commitment ceremony at his school:
Saguaro four-star Byron Murphy, the No. 1 ranked recruit in Arizona's 2016 class by Scout, has committed to Washington.— SunDevilSource.com (@SunDevilSource) January 21, 2016
Washington was able to beat out hometown Arizona State and to a lesser extent Texas A&M and USC for Murphy's pledge. Two of his good friends and fellow UW targets, N'Keal Harry and Chase Lucas, both decided to stay home and play for the Sun Devils and Byron was facing quite a bit of pressure to stay home as well so it was no small feat for UW to steal him away. Murphy will come to Seattle from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale where he played both corner and wide receiver for the Sabercats. Given his immense talent as a cover corner Byron is most likely going to find himself on the defensive side of the ball for the Huskies, but while attending the Rising Stars camp at UW over the summer he was one of the top performers at the receiver position so don't be surprised to see him get a shot at receiver as well. Regardless where he plays, it will be tough to keep an athlete of his caliber off of the field next season.
Friend of the blog Jamie Uyeyama had this to say about Murphy:
Murphy is outstanding play press man coverage. He can be physical at the line and has great mirroring skills. He adjusts well to double moves and has the speed to recover if he loses a step. He's competed one on one in camps against some of the top players on the west coast and really shined, but most importantly he shows these skills on his game film.
In 2015 Murphy totaled 53 tackles, 7 interceptions, and he also forced 3 fumbles. On offense he racked up over 1,700 yards receiving and 21 touchdowns. As always make sure to watch Byron's highlights below:
