A onetime Boise State commit, Scout.com lists Gaines as the #7 DT on the west coast. He's a huge kid for his age, and looks like he can grow to become a solid clogger in the middle of this Husky defense in future years. And not only is he big, but he's also got great mobility and a high motor, as evidenced by his playing defensive end for his high school team.
If the Huskies are going to take their defense from "very good" to a great one, then they have to hit on guys like Gaines. If he lives up to his potential and teams with a guy like Elijah Qualls, the interior of the UW defense could look quite fearsome in a few years.
