In a big early road test on the season, Washington got a chance to test their ability to compete in the Pac-12 as they took on the #24 ranked San Diego Aztecs. The Huskies have had trouble adjusting to the loss of Jernard Jarreau for the season and Desmond Simmons for the first two months, and combined with the lingering effects of Graves Disease on Shawn Kemp Jr, they have been exposed in the post.
The Huskies were able to ride tough defense in the 1st half to a 30-21 advantage, but poor shooting (helped in no small part by 5 blocks by Skylar Spencer) doomed Washington as San Diego State stormed back to win the game 70-63. The Huskies were within 2 points with 41 seconds to go after a clutch 3-pointer by Nigel Williams-Goss, but the Aztecs were able to make enough free throws and Washington missed their remaining shots as San Diego State held on.
Dots:
- Washington shot just 22-57 (38.6%) overall, but were 8-14 from 3 to keep things close. C.J. Wilcox went 3-5, NWG was 3-4 and Andrew Andrews was 2-3.
- Keeping up a season-long trend, the Huskies shot very well from the charity stripe, finishing 11-13. Unfortunately SDState got 27 attempts from the FT line, making 20.
- Washington actually managed to out-rebound the Aztecs, winning that battle 35-26
- However they also lost the TO battle 14-8
- You can't really blame the defense in this one as they held the Aztecs to 23-54 (42.6%) and just 4-13 from 3; combined with the rebounding edge, and this was a terrific effort from the Huskies
- Nice game for NWG, finishing with 15 points, 5 assists and 5 boards
- Also a pretty good game for C.J. as he notched 17 points on 7-15 shooting
- Perris Blackwell was the main man on the boards with 11 to lead all players, but was just 3-9 for 6 points
