Hello, I Must Be Going

For the past eight seasons I have had the opportunity and honor to write on almost a daily basis about one of the true passions in my life - Washington Husky football. It has been a lot of fun and I have sincerely enjoyed sharing my opinions with friend and foe alike.

Today as the annual Washington/Oregon clash approaches, I am announcing my retirement from this blog and SB Nation.

As I approach my 54th birthday I feel that my weekly message and editorial judgment have become faulty, jaded and redundant. I no longer consider myself fresh and writers block comes more easily than perceived brilliance so it is time to pass the torch of the community to younger leadership.

A number of years ago I helped write a weekly Husky point/counterpoint blog with Nathan Ware in the old Seattle P-I. One day Nathan who was much more talented than I told me he wanted to hang it up

I tried to convince him to stay because we were getting very popular as a team but he decided that enough was enough and he simply wanted to go back to being a regular Husky fan without a daily deadline or agenda.

I have been fighting the same type of feelings for the past year. On the heels of an upset win over Stanford and the successful introduction of a new site design it seems like the right time to call it quits on the eve of the Oregon game.

The best part of this experience has been all you. The thousands of friends we made the past eight years from all over the country. What started simply as a space for a few friends to talk Husky football grew into the second largest Husky community on the Internet.

I want to thank all of our loyal readers, the fine editorial staff we have assembled over the past couple of seasons, the local professional media who have been supportive, and the good folks at SB-Nation who have allowed me to have access to their incredible technology over the past five years.

So in the immortal words of the great Groucho Marx:

Hello, I must be going.
I cannot stay,
I came to say
I must be going.
I'm glad I came
but just the same
I must be going.

(chorus)
For my sake you must stay,
for if you go away,
you'll spoil this party
I am throwing.

I'll stay a week or two,
I'll stay the summer through,
but I am telling you,
I must be going.

Take care everyone.

Go Huskies!
