Puppy Chow - Locker helps himself at NFL Combine

New, 37 comments

All the news this week football wise has to do with the combine. Jake Locker helped himself this week. He obviously interviewed well, showed great speed, and made the throws the scouts were looking for him to make once he warmed up in the drills.

Everyone knows that Jake is not a finished product but the team that drafts him gets an all pro QB once he gets a couple years of experience. The intangibles he has shown are too great to allow him to sink to the second round. I think slipping into the second part of the first round is a blessing for him. Being given the chance to develop with a team that doesn't need immediate productivity at QB would be a blessing for him.

Nate Williams really didn't test well. He ran a 4.71. Mason Foster who measured out at 6'1 245 ran a 4.75. Both times were expected to be higher based on their productivity during the 2010 season. Isn't it amazing how the perceived speed of players falls when they hit the combine as compared to when they enter the University from high school?

Locker and Foster are going to end up being drafted. Figure Locker for the end of the first round and Foster for the 4th or 5th round. I think Williams ends up getting a shot as a free agent.

Pac 12 Fires 12 Football Officials

Eleven officials who worked Pac 10 games last year are going to be dismissed according to the Seattle Times. the league intends to hire 16 new officials in 2011. This is a massive and needed culture change for the Pac 12 and another example of how Larry Scott is taking care of business. Expect the same type of purge to happen in basketball and other Pac 10 sports. This is a major move so check the Times for details.

Junior Day

Nada! Nothing really definitive at all but the Huskies entertained some pretty awesome talent over the weekend. I expect that the first two commits of 2012 will be a local QB and WR. I don't think they remain uncommitted to UW through Spring practice.

The Fulmer Cup

The Cougars keep racking up early season points. LB Louis Bland was arrested on a domestic violence charge. We always expect this type of news to come out of Pullman but have you noticed that things have been really quiet in Eugene this off season? Perhaps Chip has things under control this spring.

Probation Alert?

Rumors are floating around the Internet that SI is about to blow open a big time program for recruiting violations in their next issue. The programs is supposedly an annual top 15 program at the least type of program. Names that come to mind immediately are Ohio State and Oregon if you are watching the threads.

I really doubt that it is Oregon...I have heard plenty of rumors about some death penalty type of violations going on at Ohio State and absolutely nothing about Oregon. From what I have read the allegations have to do with passing money to players...that is a huge no no.

Odds and Ends

OSU WR James Rodgers has a second surgery this week. Nobody is sure if he will be ready for 2011. too bad he was injured because he was one of my favorite player in the conference...a real game changer.

Oregon lost two linemen to injuries. Nick Rowland and Jamaal Burrell won't return next season due to career ending injuries.

WR Bug Wright was given the boot at Arizona. It hasn't been a good off season for the Wildcats.
