Pac 12 Basketball Pickem Results/Schedule

FIRST PLACE! Not me but the Huskies. After sweeping the LA schools at home, and combined with Cal's loss to Arizona, UW has one game lead in the conference. CAHusky holds onto one game in our pool. Big road trip for the huskies this weekend as they head to Oregon. Look out for Ben's preview in the next couple days. Here are the results:

4 Huskies get Combine Invites

Looks like four (4) lucky Dawgs are going to the combine this year:

  1. Jermaine Kearse
  2. Seneo Kelemete
  3. Chris Polk
  4. Alameda Ta'amu.

Not bad seeing that the Dawgs had three (3) last year in Mason Foster, Jake Locker and Nate Williams. I guess you could draw all kinds of conclusions from this like, "we had more defensive players at the combine last year therefore the Mayan Calender is correct and the world will end this year ..." or something like that.

What I really like to see is that the Dawgs have more invites then last year. That is what we want to see, more kids on the team being seen as legitimate NFL prospects. Even though this was just one more player, continue this trend and in three (3) years it will be seven (7) guys.

Understanding the 3-4 defense (and other great links)

This was posted over on the Dawgman.com boards (big thanks to iqueral for originally posting these), and the links are too good not to pass along here too.

We all expect that new DC Justin Wilcox will implement more odd-numbered fronts here, and in anticipation of that, here are some good primers on understanding a 3-4 defense and that means in terms of roles and responsibilities for the various positions and how it compares to the 4-3:

It's been such a long time.

Boston song, for those of you too young. It has, being on this site from the start more or less. The growth and quality of the comments has amazed me. I know it's not due to me, but John has kept cranking stuff out and has enough disbelievers to keep things interesting. I just want to let everyone know how much I appreciate your thoughts, each and every one of them. Thank you from an overseas fan who obsesses just as much as you do.

Thank You

When John mentioned how the Steve Kelley article brought some hatemail out of the woodwork it got me thinking.

Rather than hating, I want to say thank you.

How do you feel about recruiting?

I want to start off with a quick shout out to all of the players that have joined the DAWG pack this year. Welcome aboard! We in Husky nation are absolutely nuts about everything related to Husky sports so please forgive some of us that get a little too FANatical in our debate. When we talk about "poor class" vs "strong class" or "late rally saving the class" we don't mean the individual players are/were lacking, simply that we didn't get enough players at certain positions.

Having said that, there has been a lot of debate about how good this class really is (as it pertains to our team needs), and what it might mean as far as long term recruiting strategy. I know we are all really happy with the late rally in this class, but was it good enough? How do you feel about the apparent emphasis of Cal talent over the local boys? I personally hope that this was just a one year anomaly, not a trend. I'll let it slide this year because we landed some monster players from out of state. However, we can't let the local big fish slip away any more. What do you think?

Poll
How do you feel about the in-state vs out of state recruiting balance in this years class?

Signing Day Ceremony thoughts

Just a few quick observations from the Signing Day Ceremony in Hec Ed earlier tonight.

  • These guys work their asses off. All of the coaches looked like they could use a 24-hour nap. They did the best they could and were generally funny, enthusiastic and charismatic, but you could tell they were all running on fumes. Sark mentioned his new DC, "Justin Sirmon" - I think that says it all about his exhaustion level.
  • Related to the above point - one of the stories was about how the staff managed to flip Pio Vatuvei from USC. The USC coaches apparently finished up their call with Pio last night at around 10PM. Bad call - that left the window open for Tosh to call him, and by 1AM the staff had succeeded in finally flipping him. This wasn't the only good Vatuvei story...

Where the UW stands currently with remaining recruits

With just a few days until Signing Day on Wednesday, the first day recruits can send binding LOI (or slightly less-binding financial aid agreements - hint hint Oregon prospects), here's the latest on Husky recruiting targets, gleaned from various sources (and know that many of these situations are fluid and could change between now and Wednesday):

Tony Wroten Does Not Goaltend Final Shot, Huskies Prevail on the Road

This is the game Husky Nation has been waiting for. The game where the Huskies brought it in the first half. The game where the Dawgs played like a team. The game where Ross showed his killer instinct. The game we desperately wanted to see. Tonight we got what we have been pleading for. This Husky team may have turned the corner.

There is something about the national stage that dazzles all of us. Knowing that this is being watched by the entire country. It can either bring the best out in somebody, or the pressure can crack a person. This team belongs in the former category. Whenever they are put on national television something just clicks. Typically there is one player who just stands out on the national stage. This is a team that stands out when the country is watching. This team plays their best basketball with millions watching.

Team.

It feels so good to finally say that this feels like a team. Not a scattered group of individuals wearing the same jersey. This is a team, or at least, masqueraded as one tonight. Multiple times their constitution was tested, and multiple times they responded. When Arizona went on a 9-0 run in the first half, WIlcox hit a big shot to put a tourniquet on the bleeding. Then later we bore witness to the chilling of the blood within the veins of Terrence Ross. That shot was absolutely vile.
