It is a light but meaningful weekend as teams all across the country are getting their BYE weeks in. Nevertheless, there are still several matchups that Washington Husky fans will have a rooting interest in. Here are the key ones:
Week 7 Washington Huskies Rooting Guide
NC State at #3 Clemson
This one is obvious. The Huskies are assured a spot in the playoffs if they go undefeated and win the PAC 12 however, their resume doesn't look so good if there is a loss along the way. If we are talking about a one-loss Husky playoff team, some help will be required. Clemson hasn't been stellar themselves. A loss to an unranked NC State team could be useful if it ever came down to it.
#1 Alabama vs #9 Tennessee
A road loss to a top 10 SEC team won't exactly kill Alabama. However, it could create a little chaos in the SEC West where both Texas A&M and the Tide remain undefeated (with a matchup coming up). Chaos is good if you are looking at this from a UW positioning standpoint. Plus, anything that potentially bounces Alabama from the playoffs is good news for everybody else. Trust me, we don't want ‘Bama.
#10 Nebraska vs Indiana
We want a blowout here as anything that boosts Oregon’s SOS helps UW.
UCLA vs WSU
We as fans are probably most interested in seeing a WSU win here. Having the Cougs pumped up as a ranked team by the time the Apple Cup is useful. However, the flip side is that UCLA is probably still the best pound-for-pound team in the South. If you still think that them winning the South is realistic, it would be useful for them to be as highly ranked as possible by the time the PAC 12 Championship rolls around. That said, we are definitely playing WSU, so I’d root for them.
#2 Ohio State vs #8 Wisconsin
We need to be careful here. The Big Ten is a legitimate threat to get two teams in. If it were to happen, Wisconsin could well be that second team. If they were to pull of this home win and then lose close to tOSU in the Big Ten Championship, they'd have a legitimate argument for a playoff spot over a one-win PAC 12 champion. Keep in mind, in that scenario, they'd also have a win over a top 10 Nebraska team.
This could surely work in reverse and benefit tOSU (or Michigan, for that matter). Still, one has to presume that the Big Ten champ is most likely coming from the East. I'd rather see a dominating Michigan or tOSU claim the title with the loser from the West sporting at least two losses. Thus, I’d cheer for the Buckeyes.
