Featured Fanpost: Recruiting Star Ratings in The Sark Era

Well dawgpound, it is time to talk about something that hasn’t been brought up much…..recruiting. In this fanpost I want to address the star ratings that go along with the recruits. A lot of people have been discussing expectations about recruiting, whether Petersen is a good recruiter, or if he will be as good as Sarkisian at recruiting. This article is not really meant to answer those questions as much as give you all a guide to look at when understanding the star ratings that Sarkisian averaged while at UW. This article will not talk about the players themselves but only the star ratings. We will take a look at the four main recruiting sites which are Rivals, Scouts, ESPN and 247. I will not include Sarkisian’s first recruiting class only because it would skew the numbers too much when averaging the numbers for his overall average. Although this is a transition year in coaching just like 2009 it is a completely different scenario and the program is in a drastically different place. I would also like to note that ESPN does not hand out 5 star rankings lightly. They gave out only 15 this year and 11 the last few years. Also I want to point out that I am not a member of 247 and don’t know why they have two different star ratings for players. Some had both 3 and 4 stars. In these cases I would look at what the other sites rating the player and would assign the rating as appropriately as I could. It isn’t a perfect science, put neither are the star ratings themselves. So let’s dig in.

Now do not be depressed when you look at these numbers when comparing them to this year’s. For one this recruiting season is not over yet, and also Petersen has had a month and a half to recruit for UW. Most of the highly rated players are already committed to a school or have build relationships over the past year with a particular school and coaching staff. What I really want to provide for everyone is something to look at as a benchmark for how we can compare recruiting classes going strictly by the star ratings. And for people to stop acting like Sarkisian brought in a ton of 5 star recruits because it simply isn’t true. He was good, but not that good.

If we are able to land Budda and McGary this class will be very close to the average numbers that Sarkisian put up. Given a full calendar year these numbers are almost assuredly going to increase for Petersen. This would mean he should be able to recruit the same level of talent (according to the star ratings) as Sarkisian. This should make many, if not all of you, feel very optimistic about the future of this program as most believe that Petersen is a better developer of talent and overall coach. Only time will tell though. So in the mean time let’s keep watching the recruits commit. Woof and Go Da
