As much as we all try to remain objective and logical in our expectations for each season, it is fall camp and I find myself putting on my purple tinted shades once again. Something special is brewing on Montlake and I can’t wait to see it served up on August 31. We have a revitalized stadium to break in, and renewed expectations that come along with it. When I look at the talent and potential on this team I can’t help but see some correlations to the situation that was presented to the Huskies of the 1990 and 1991 teams. We have an offense that can score, have just undergone a schematic transformation of our defense, and have a solid core of junior players supporting our senior leadership.
We all know what happened last time. The 1990 squad started 3-0, including the famous “all I saw was purple” trouncing of the #5 USC Trojans. The following week would be a letdown loss to #20 Colorado before reeling off 5 straight wins. The chances for a run at the national championship were dashed by UCLA, and the Huskies would go on to finish 10-2. I see this year’s squad capable of achieving similar heights. We are talented, but a little young. There is no reason why this squad can’t improve to 9-3 or 10-2, achieving great things while leaving us hungry for more.
After the Rose Bowl win against Iowa on Jan 1, the team gathered together and Ed Cunningham thanked the seniors for rising to such heights, but that he expected to see everyone else in the weight room the next day because in 1991 nothing but 12-0 would be acceptable. The next year they lost their starting QB Mark Brunell (to injury in training camp instead of graduation like Keith Price, but bear with me) and highly touted redshirt sophomore Billy Hobert had to step up (I’m looking at you Cyler Miles). With Hobert supported by a core of talented seniors and tenacious defense… well you know how that story ends.
Our current roster is built in a similar manner. We have young and experienced talent this year that can get us back into the national picture and a HUGE piece of this team will be back next year, hungry for more. Just 24 more days until the new era of Husky football begins, let’s go take what is ours! Go Dawgs!
