Washington Hires Chris Petersen As Their New Head Coach

Brian Losness-USA TODAY Sports

After rebuffing offers from BCS schools multiple times, Petersen decided that Washington was the school for him.

He has turned down interest from multiple Pac-12 schools before. USC has contacted him. Oregon has contacted him. UCLA has contacted him. Boise State's Chris Petersen has not budged. He wanted to say a Bronco. So much so that Celebrity Hot Tub of SB Nation made a form letter for Petersen to use when he declines a job.

Not any longer. He has accepted the position as head football coach at the University of Washington. (via Joe Schad of ESPN)

On Thursday both Petersen and Alabama Offensive Coordinator Doug Nussmeier interviewed with Scott Woodward with regards to the position. It was speculated, given Petersen's history, that Petersen was the one doing the interviewing, not Woodward.

The two had a 90-minute meeting in Boise before Woodward flew back to Seattle. Adam Jude reported that the offer was made that night, and that it was for quite a substantial amount of money. Contract details will come out sooner or later.

What some fans have come out and said is that they really don't care whether Nuss or Petersen got the job. Their biggest concern was keeping Justin Wilcox (a candidate himself, although he was less of a candidate) as defensive coordinator and keeping Tosh Lupoi on staff. It appears that Lupoi and Wilcox are a package deal, as Lupoi wants to stay under Wilcox, and Wilcox hasn't left for USC yet.

Wilcox was under Petersen at Boise earlier in his career. It will be interesting to see if he still sticks around.

Petersen, 49, is not viewed as a recruiting wizard. What he is known for is player development and scheming (X's and O's). He wins, though. Just look at this. He has been known to have trouble with the media and boosters. No idea how well that is going to go over at UW, but Woodward believes that he is still the man for the job.

Stay tuned, we will have more on the story as it develops.
