UW is ranked #3 in the nation and had a thrilling comeback yesterday to beat #6 USC, coming back from an 0-2 set deficit to win the 5th set by 2 points and go to the final 4 in the regional in Seattle. I realize that volleyball is in general a 'ho-hum' sport for many, but I want to state the case for volleyball being the most exciting sport to watch. Like many of you I am a Husky football fanatic. Having watched the Huskies 1959 and 1960 Rose Bowl teams I'm still, emotionally an 11 year old when it comes to Husky football. When Jim Owens and Bob Schloredt & Company were robbed of the 1960 National Title* I was, even at 11 livid at the injustice. They beat Wisconsin 44-8, and followed that up in 1960 beating the No. 1 team in the Nation, Minnesota, in the Rose Bowl. That they were not voted #1 stuck in my craw until 1991, and still annoys me.
Pardon the digression, but I wanted to try and establish some street cred before expounding on volleyball. It will be short. The UW won the National Championship in 2005 and will play in the regional semifinals this week after beating USC. In volleyball every point counts, every play counts huge. Every play is a scoring play. Very exciting. Anyway this a plug for supporting the Dawg girls. They play #2 Penn State next week [sorry to be vague, but the idiots on ESPN said the game was 'Thursday, Dec. 21'] Plus, love those long legged girls. :D
*They were awarded the Helms Trophy as National Champions in 1960
