Signing Day - the Aftermath Thread
We've got a full class and not enough room on the roster to squeeze them all in. Attrition is a natural. Not all the commits will get in - we know this. Time to do a little decompression and rehabilitate our collectively tired asses. Discuss.

I disagree with the ESPN grade. I'd give it a solid B to a B+
Suffice it to say, I’m thrilled. Out of town all week in meetings, and had to rely on twitter for updates. Might have thrown out an ill-timed ‘woof’ or two in the middle of a presentation…
Attrition
Do we know what the attrition needs to be for this year? A quick number I cme up with was 4, but that seems low. I don’t know where to get scholarship info.
Benno
From the sounds of it,
Sark and Condotta didn’t seem to think any attrition was necessary. Maybe one greyshirt from one of the Hawaii kids that has a knee issue, but other than that, they may not need any attrition after Nick Montana left. Bob Condotta will be putting something out soon on that issue.

Overall- Good Class
I’d give this class a B+ as I think we addressed a lot of key needs and it has a lot of potential. Lots of good commits and we came on strong at the end. THe shortcomings in recruiting were addressed with the new hires though I wish it had happened sooner. Sark and company pulled it together and we landed some big fish and were in play on others.
Lots of nice signing day surprises which was nice to see with just the one bad one in Payton – overall quite good.
However, this recruiting cycle was marred by error. We wiffed on some top players in Washington state who we could have/should have gotten. A couple of those may come back to haunt us as they are going to be playing at top competitors. These errors keep the class from being a great one though it ended up being quite good.
Also, love that we stacked up on the D side of the ball, would have liked to see a couple more linemen though.

Solid but not great
UW addressed MASSIVE needs in the secondary and size at DE. Sark did a great job getting two excellent QB prospects to follow Price, too. I think this class is very top heavy, and that we need to step our game up bringing in impact players on the defensive front 7.
But the game isn’t played no paper. Overall I take the success of the past week to be a hugely positive sign about what the new staff can do with a full year work.
The class is top heavy with stars in the skill positions.
Wilcox was going to have to work some magic as it was next year, he might need to do that in 2013 now, too.
I'm so positive, you'll need AZT later.
Bingo
Skill questions were answered for the most part but we didn’t get it done on the offensive and defensive lines. No true tackles on offense and no run pluggers on the defensive line.

True...and we'll know alot more about the strengths/weaknesses of this staff soon...
I give it a B grade for crapping in their diaper instate, then finishing with amazing style…I really do like the needs that were addressed… though, we won’t really know much until the spring practices. All in all, it’s a top 20 class which is pretty amazing considering how it “felt” just over 2 weeks ago…when there wasn’t a defensive coaching staff and defections were being erased daily off the “commits” list….now there’s a funny word:“commitment” (Thank you Bill Clinton?)
I look at it like this
We got a game changing player in Shaq, on the defense, which we NEEDED. Skilled positions are now loaded with talent. We got some good depth for both lines, even though they aren’t covering all positions it’s still good depth. and concerning areas were addressed. Yes Garnett and Banner make this an elite class, I will put this one right below that. The other thing I love about this class is the underlying theme of some hardworking lunch pail types. I like the cut of their jib!

Dean is a true tackle
he’s the only one, but we have youth at that spot so I think it’s something that can be addressed next year. I would have liked to have had Banner to groom into the LT role, but the Cascade Front is going to be So/Jr’s this year, so it’s not like we’re replacing seniors with true frosh.
We're young at LB
and we’ve got some talent, if not depth on the DL. The secondary was the big need on D, and we filled it in spades. I’m failing to see an area besides DT that we really fell short on. RB and OT maybe? By my count we’ve got Riva, Hatchie, Kolher, Charles, Francher and now Dean as OT’s. That’s 4 3rd or better year guys. Plus we’ve got plenty of “athlete” types in this class who can be shifted to RB.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m pretty bullish on this class and think it was fairly balanced.
There was only one
Think I heard Ryan McDaniel was it.

Jordan Payton
So I’m a little hung up on this still. Have we heard what happened in the 12 hours after he committed live on ESPN, that made him change his mind to UCLA?
Bringing Purple to Pullman
He changed his mind again
Kid probably changes his mind after he orders food and gets four things there as well.
Has he said anything though?
It’s just that it was so damn quick. I swear it takes me longer to decide what movie to watch on netflix sometimes…

From an LA Times story about him from tonight:
“It’s crazy, but the people have to understand this process is crazy,” Payton said. “You’re giving an 18-year-old kid a decision of a lifetime. I wanted to make sure I made the right decision.”
Payton said he gave up his USC commitment after learning more about the NCAA sanctions imposed. He said he loved California but the coaches who were recruiting him left. He liked Washington, but after discussions with his parents and a phone conversation with UCLA Coach Jim Mora that lasted to 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, Payton said, “I thought I’d be most successful at UCLA.”
Jimmy Mora seems the natural college recruiter
and a phone conversation with UCLA Coach Jim Mora that lasted to 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, Payton said, "I thought I’d be most successful at UCLA."
I am impressed with his ability to turn that class around in such a short period of time. Let’s see if he can coach!
Go Huskies!
Jim Mora is a natural recruiter, period.
The little bit of magic he used when he flew in TJ Houshmandzadeh in on a sea-plaen and held on to Houshmandzadeh’s watch was a brilliant show of salesmanship several years back.
He’s always been an energetic person, so I had very little trouble imagining him to be at least a solid recruiter.
And he must be a heckuva a salesman to convince Payton that he will be more successful in UCLA with whoever they have at quarterback – Hundley? – than with Keith Price.

Mora might not enjoy it (reportedly), but I think he's good at it
He’s got the right personality to win over people. And he’s got the right staff – younger energetic guys to do most of the groundwork, and then Mora can jump in at the end and close the deal.
Jim has been good at about everything he has ever done…he lost some luster with his stint with the Hawks but that was a bad deal for all involved.

Dawgman guys said on KJR today
That when he and Shaq came up for their unofficial they came with a corner and McCarthy and were all basically on board, but Payton’s parents said no to UW, or one of the parents did, maybe Ellis’, and then that’s why those 3 ended up at UCLA.
Ellis McCarthy was on that trip recently?!?!
and was favoring UW you say?

When Payton and Shaq were on their unofficial.
True
Eklund repeated the statement multiple times today. and it was Kenny Walkers father that had an issue with his son @ UW. shoulda, coulda, woulda, I guess?
I knew it
When Walker flipped again to UCLA, I had a strong feeling it must have been family pressure. He clearly was sold on the UW after coming up here.
Oh well..
I really like this class, with what we gained compared to losing Payton and Walker… I’ll take it.

that guy is right
Cal could be a powerhouse at football if they wanted to be, but the passion and history just isn’t there like it is here, and Sark exploited it.
Yup, my favorite comment is
Seriously. Stanford just reeled in a top 5 class but Berkeley is supposed to be content? Jack, punch yourself in the nuts.

Stanford administration has bought in to football success
They’ve eased up on academic standards for football players, and I’d bet they’re paying their coaches more than Cal is.
Plus, as good as Cal is academically, Stanford trumps them there.
For sure, it's comical to me
They rip this guy for telling the truth. When you look at what happened to them in this class: 1)Why is Tosh the only one recruiting at Cal, 2)If he’s so important why aren’t you paying him, 3)What is JT doing about it. Don’t blame Sark for taking this opportunity and making it work for him, that shouldn’t have ever happened if Cal was serious about building a great football team. If JT was worth anything he would have been able to keep most of his class like most were saying. Experts predicted maybe one or two, not most blue chippers.

Word is
Cal refused to match our offer for Tosh, not because he wasn’t worth it, but because then he’d be making a lot more money than the other assistants who’d then want to know where their raise is, etc.
Basically they’d have to pay the whole staff more and balked on the idea. I get why Cal fans hate us, but their hate is misdirected outside instead of inside their own program that clearly has no interest in being competitive in the new Pac-12 sports market.

Have you followed recruiting this closely in the past?
I’m curious if that is abnormal compared to most years for the Huskies, or if it’s something where they’ve always put out feelers, but just never real them in.
by Mind of no mind on Feb 2, 2012 12:08 AM PST up reply actions
traditionally UW puts little effort in places outside the West Coast
Under DJ they’d send out questionnaires to kids around the country to get a sense of interest. Usually there wasn’t much and the UW would move on, but every once in a while they’d find a kid that had some type of connection to the PNW or some reason for considering the UW and they’d recruit him. The ’91 team had a couple guys from Virginia (Donald Jones, Ed Cunnigham), I can remember a kid out of New Jersey on an earlier Husky team, he got a highly rated RB out of Texas named Willis Ray Mackey (who transferred after a year).
But given the connections Wilcox & Sirmon made back east from their time at Tennessee, and the national recruiting scope & responsibilities Cal gave Lupoi, I think you’ll see a bit more effort to expand the UW’s recruiting horizons.
We need to start recruiting nationally
Look at USC, Oregon, and Stanford. There just isn’t enough kids in Cali and Wash. to put together a National Champ. caliber team EVERY year, especially when you have to fight off 20 (Pac 12, Big 12, ND) schools for a small pool (in the grand scheme of things) of talent. Expanding your recruiting base is a good idea, as long as you do not spread too thin.
Announcing on TV for one program
Then sending in an LOI for another less than 24 hours later has to be one of the more “interesting” things I’ve seen during the recruiting season. Not judging by any means, but weird? Yeah…
agreed.
I know they’re just teens, but it’s hard to wrap my head around. I’m sure I’ll forget about it in a few days.

I don't want to bash the kid, because he seems very likeable
But when you have a kid that commits to 4 schools in the course of several months, you know that he’s easily swayed. Last coach to talk to him won.
The part that I find most interesting about the announcement last night and the way he changed his mind afterwards.
Is that he didn’t even have a UCLA hat on the table. Makes me wonder how good Mora’s pitch must have been. That was pretty Calipari’ish of him.

Nice Recovery
We must give a great deal of credit to Sark for doing what it takes to make sure this was a good recruiting class. UW was in a big hole and let a lot of big time local recuits escape, but he fought and grinded, hired some good coaches and it looks like they salvaged this class.
There is no doubt the coaches slacked and were not on top of things early on in the process. This could have been a top 10 class had we kept some of the top local kids, but we must give a lot of credit for the push we made.

Happy Birthday!
Mine as well . . . though I’m a little older . . .
I give the class a B+
Thinks looked weird just a couple weeks ago, but Sark and the whole crew did a very good job of finishing strong and landing a whole lot of critical needs for this team. Especially, the D backfield. They really hit one out of the park with that. Outstanding part of the class. Shaq Thompson is one of the biggest D gets this program has had in a very long time.
We added some incredible beef to the lines. 2 huge gets at qb. Some more weapons for Price. Some players that will add more deminsions to the game plans we can implement.
Everyone must admit this was one of the craziest PAC recruiting seasons I’ve ever seen.
I think the couple big named in-state recruits that chose schools like USC, Stanford, and Notre Dame, created a lot of panic that was unwarranted. Sark has done a great job of retaining a lot of the best in-state talent since he arrived. The wall is still up, alive, and very well. But no matter what, having that wall up will never guarantee that 100% of local kids will stay. We got to get agressive in Cali, Hawaii, and other states, and it paid off bigtime.
This class is impressive and give it a B+. And now that our new coaches are going to have a year to recruit for 2013, next year could be an A grade class.
