Soo pumped.
Soo excited. Here’s to the Dawgs!
Lets get this thing going
interested to see the “new treat” that coachsark.com is rolling out this year
15 minutes and no faxes?
I’m concerned that our recruits don’t wake up early enough.
Travel day for me..
I will be checking back in from Chi-town when I get in.
UW Dawg Pound - SBN Seattle
Always a delay after the fax is received
The UW compliance officers have to confirm before an announcement can be made. In years past, IIRC, we’d see a fax come off the machine, and then an announcement 10-15 minutes later.
Go Dawgs!
Go Dawgs!!! Shaq Thompson and Teeth Price in Wild Cat formation? With K-Williams and new cast out on the wings. Nice!
way to be specific Ruth
Gotta love her teases that can’t be traced back as right or wrong after the fact.
She’s got the best sources around – just ask the voices in her head!

Pirates are punctual?
@JakeWorthen
Nothing from #Washington so far, interesting format on web site. #WSU has 7 in so far, including favorite OL Eduardo Middleton. #SigningDay
Twitter again
@bcondotta:
“UW saying it’s waiting to dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s before making announcements. Apparently signing lots of kids with long names”
LAWYERS ARE THE WORST
Since there is no fax cam
I wonder if they are holding them all back to make a bigger announcement about multiple kids at a time instead of drip drip drip.
@CoachSark
Kendyl Taylor! say.ly/eDL1lIT
That explains the delay
Lawyers spent the first hour trying to determine if Kendall can legally be spelled Kendyl.
I love Taylor! Pure Dawg...
Big expectations for this guy….
coachsark.com
They better be planning something better than what they are giving us…I expect a big “treat” but so far its been a big dud…
8 AM and we only have one LOI?????
FIRE HOLT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Supposed to go on with Mitch this morning...
not sure why he would do that if he’s not signing.

That loss is going to hurt. But being an MI guy, I have to be pro-Lindquist!
thisjustinlee.wordpress.com
i still think he'll come here
i think he just wants to make sure hes right.
Lov the optimism
I’d hate to lose the guy, but we can afford to. I hope he still picks Udub, QB roster depth is important to our growth.
Full complement of Washingtons.

CGB is bitter, angry and vindictive over the whole Tosh thing.
From my personal experience looking at all the different blogs
CGB guys are by the weirdest. Something in the water at Berkeley. DAMN THEM FOR REJECTING ME. :(

CGB thinking they were being clever.
It’s like the “Craig James killed five hookers while at SMU” meme, but way less funny.
CGB
They’re trying to do something similar to how Every Day Should Be Saturday started the “Craig James (allegedly) killed five hookers while at SMU” thing.
Of course, unlike the seals thing EDSBS uses their powers for good.

It's difficult to wrap my mind around the magnitude of his recruitment.
If he’s even 80% as good as all the things I’ve been reading then this is a total game changer for the dawg’s D. It’s gonna be amazing to watch his ascent into super-stardom.
I've heard "once-in-a-decade prospect" at safety.
Shaq, Parker, and Sample – good luck over the middle, opposing WRs!
Now we just need to shut down the damn run

Rumor
Cleveland Wallace may be flipping to us last minute…
And welcome Jeff Lindquist!
@AngieMachado1: Hearing that CB Cleveland Wallace may be flipping commitment to #UW. #signingday
Thanks for that! I've been holding my breath
More meat than I expected for breakfast! Perfect ….Dawgs are carnivores!
good news though
usc probably won’t have a spot for him if he waits till after today
Hope they don't use that to pressure him into a decision though
Cyler is a good kid and he should play wherever he feels like he’ll get the best and quickest opportunity to play
thisjustinlee.wordpress.com
Exactly.
We have one stud QB, two is just icing on the cake.

USC now has a bigger logjam at QB than UW. Miles has got to see that.

Didn't Kiffie that 13 year old QB to commit in 2010?
David Sills. Yeah, that’s right, for the class of 2015. There’s that kid, too!
by Cad on Feb 1, 2012 9:38 AM PST up reply actions
Who else does USC have?
Cyler has a gun and 4.4 speed. Nuff said. AHHH NOW I WANT HIM
thisjustinlee.wordpress.com
they have some super talented kids
max wittek, jesse scroggins
With Jeff Lindquist
two top QB’s in one class, someone would have to sit. I do like that J. Lindquist doesn’t seem to care but Miles may not want to compete if he doesn’t have too…this is just my opinion and is in no way a knock on Miles.
if he doesnt want to compete then he def shouldn't go to usc
thats way more competition
if they dont bring in another QB
in this class then he can redshirt and still have 2 years of starting potential.
well there is always gonna be top notch competition there
they’ll bring in a top qb next year
Maybe I'm too much of an optimist
But recruiting quarterbacks should never be a huge issue for our program. For some reason, even if we lose out on Miles, I feel like every year we are in contention to get one of the top 10 QB recruits.
thisjustinlee.wordpress.com
that should be the expectation with Sark as coach
For example, while I’d be disappointed if Browne is determined to go elsewhere for the 2013 class, I have every confidence Sark will find another highly talented QB to join up in his place. QB is not a spot I worry about with Sark around.
Woop!
I know we lost out on some big fish in Washington. But I’m so glad that we’ve picked up some solid D recruits this year. I think that makes out to the less-than-spectacular talent that we got the year prior.
thisjustinlee.wordpress.com
If you guys are super anxious for fast info...

We'd have 3.
It’s not that much more out there.
In fact 3 RS Frosh and younger
But you’d like to see Miles coming in confident that he can beat the others out. A big-time QB has to be able to tell himself he’s the best out there.

I won't let USC ruin my day
It’s been a good one, better than most of us hoped for. I love being greedy but it’s ok. If Miles wants to be a Trojan, we will just have to make him say “All I see is purple!”
by datboyeddiep on Feb 1, 2012 11:09 AM PST up reply actions
Yup ...in the end we've got a MVP in Lindquist
and frankly I don’t know who’s going to emerge in that USC QB gauntlet after Barkley leave. Even if Miles becomes a Toejam we won’t see him on the field for 3 years.
I mean don't get me wrong
Depth at QB is huge for the growth and future success of our program. It would be great if he signs with us, but I will not allow those guys to ruin this day! If he wants to be a Trojan, good luck to him!
by datboyeddiep on Feb 1, 2012 11:15 AM PST up reply actions
Agree whole heartedly
Miles would be a bigtime get & would practically assure the dawgs of having top level qb play for years, but at this point if he defects it wouldn’t be soul crushing so much as merely disappointing. By all accounts Lindquist is legit, and we already know Price is!
Depth at QB is important
And only 3 scholarship QBs (with one true and one RS frosh) is pretty short on depth. Remember that you need QBs not just for injury replacements on game day, but for running practice at all.
I know from way back it seemed Sark definitely wanted two QBs from this class (even before any inkling of Montana transferring). Anyone got a guess whether we have some backup plans out there (kids who have verballed to smaller schools that we told to wait on signing in case we send a last-minute offer)?
I dunno - but our lack of depth continues to stress me out.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
Jason Thompson?
Did he commit to Wyoming already? Probably would be a dickish thing to do, but he does play QB. Of course, Shaq played QB in HS and Simms did in JC.

Cyler Miles puts Huskies over the top for a great recruiting class!
Sark & Huskies took huge steps forward today and are officially off my sh-t list for last year’s inconsistent performance. I can’t wait for Spring Ball! GO HUSKIES!
so couldn't usc wait till next year to use those open scholaship spots
then they would have 19 spots next year
Not sure...
But, since they can’t be at more than 75 total, may just mean they won’t have to kick as many players off the team now…
Yes
So if they signed 15 this year and that brought their total scholarship players entering fall camp to over 75, then anyone on the roster currently could be cut.
Pretty much...
But with Lame Kitten at the helm, would you really be surprised if he axed a few of the third stringers in favor of some new 5 star talent?
to be fair...
…it happens at most school. Let’s not forget that quite a few guys from the Ty era left the program under Sark. Sometimes attrition is totally a kid’s decision, sometimes there’s “encouragement” from the coaching staff. Those of us in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones…
Agreed, but....
Attrition under a new coaching staff is a little different. Often times, the players already on the roster don’t fit the model envisioned by the new staff and as such, are asked to move on or “encouraged” to look elsewhere. In this case, if USC had over-signed knowing they’d have to cut some kids, I think that’s a little more harsh, particularly given the clear intent by the current coaching staff (who is not new) to over-sign and cut kids later.
Also, if I recall correctly, when Sark took over, we were never really at risk of going over the 85 person limit so his roster management was more directed at finding players for his system rather than intentionally adding too many players knowing that he’d just cut some kids later.
not true
In both of the first three seasons under Sark there was a lot of question about how he’d fit his recruiting classes into the existing roster because the numbers would put us well over. Even this year I think we’re signing more guys than have exhausted their eligibility.
And Kiffin is only in his 3rd season, so the comparison to Sark is still valid.

Not surprising at all.
Brostek had extremely little exposure to the media and scouting services, combined with living in Hawaii, it makes for an incomplete rating. I’d be willing to bet that Brostek is as good, if not better, than Garnett and Banner.

I don't know
Brostek looked pretty darn explosive when I saw him play. And remember, big men are the hardest to forecast to the next level, so you never really know how it will all settle out. Recruiting is only half the battle.
Not at all....
I think he’s already better than Banner as far as Garnett? Probably not yet but it’s close…I’ll be surprised if alot of us aren’t giddy once it sinks in how good he is..
I don't mean to take ANYTHING away from Banner and Garnett
Brostek’s dad was an All PAC10 offensive linemen and won the Morris Trophy his final year. He was then drafted #23 overall in the NFL draft and played for 8 (?) years in the NFL before retiring due to injuries. When that guy is your dad and your football coach, odds are you have the genetics and the tutoring to be a future NFL linemen.
The only reason Shane Brostek is a 3 star prospect is because he lives in Hawaii and was sheltered from the media and scouting services. Trust me (and the others here), Brostek is a stud and will be an All PAC12 player.
"Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."
"Legends are made on the shores of Lake Washington"
My saying that Brostek is not (at this point) of Zach Banner/Josh Garnett quality doesn't mean I think he's average.
I think he’s a very very good prospect.

Most upside, but most bust potential as well.
There’s a reason there have been so few guys that tall that have succeded on the field.
going by their dads...
…Brostek doesn’t have any advantage. Kennedy was an even better OL than Brostek, and Garnett was a terrific athlete and talent that was derailed by foot injuries.
Lincoln isn't his coach though
Bern has been there to mentor Shane along the way. I think Shane is better right now than Banner, although they’ll play different positions. Zach has huge upside though, and likely could end up as an AA down the road.
That was my point.
Thanks for the assist. Both have TREMENDOUS upside, but Shane has been tutored by his dad since he was in diapers. In my original comment I said, Brostek is as good, if not better than Banner. I didn’t say he was better, just saying he is highly underrated and will be a stud offensive lineman.
"Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."
"Legends are made on the shores of Lake Washington"
I think Brostek will be real good
But he’s also probably closer already to his ceiling – a LOT closer – than Banner. Brostek is probably more ready to play this fall, but 4 years from now, I’d bet Banner is the better player.

by chemicalhuskies on Feb 1, 2012 2:39 PM PST up reply actions
yup
Sark does bring up a good point with the subjectiveness of the ratings. Besides, maybe more than any other position, linemen really develop between 18-22. I’ve seen data showing that a considerable number of NFL first-round OL picks were unranked at their position coming out of high school.
pull up the food cart...I'm eating it up!

HUGE past few days for UW football
This class went from average to top 25 in a hurry, but it’s still got to be better going forward. Fortunately we’ve got the personnel in Tosh, Sirmon, and Wilcox to make that happen.
Now to coach up that D!
Below average

below average is a harsh assessment...
… talent wise, it is a borderline top 20 which is pretty good for us. We deserve demerits for missing out on exceptional in-state talent. Sark will have to answer for that.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
From some of what I've read it sounds like with Banner and Garnett, part of the decision was out of Sark's hands
They just wanted to go elsewhere, and there wasn’t much the staff could do to change their minds.
The object of rectuiting is to CHANGE kids' minds.
That’s what recruiting, and sales, is all about. Do you actually think Shaq Thompson had any notion that he wanted to be a Husky until he was recruited?
That’s why this class is good, but not as good as it should have been. I’m fine with it. More than fine, given the hole the Dawgs’ dug themselves out of the last two weeks. But it should’ve been very, very special.
Yes, but you can't control their decision, no more than you can control the weather.
There will always be things that are out of a coach’s hands. That’s what makes recruiting so difficult: The human element.

@chrislandon
He's right though.
Even an average year in the state (which you should count on every year in Washington) makes this class what it should’ve been.
All of the signings are great. But the misses are pretty damn bad.
It doesn't have enough balance
…but all in all not a bad recovery.

I don't follow this stuff too close but...
Shaq is a 5 star prospect. Not even ASJ, Kasen Williams, or Jake Locker were 5 star guys.
This class may not have a strong local presence, but our team did get a lot of 4 star recruits all the same. Miles, Lindquist, Mickens, and Beaver. All told five guys who rate 4 or 5 stars.
How does this year compare in terms 4 and 5 star recruits compared to years past? I honestly don’t know, and I’ve heard UW get some very good national recruiting grades in the past so I’m curious.
by Kip Earlywine on Feb 1, 2012 5:12 PM PST up reply actions
Kasen & ASJ were 5* in some databases
And besides, don’t make too much of a fuss over the distinction between 4* and 5*.
Shaq is a big-time talent, but so was Kasen & so was ASJ. What’s huge about landing Shaq is that usually when Washington gets a talent like that, it’s a local kid. Grabbing an elite talent out of California is unusual for the UW.
Kasen...
He was rated as the #1 recruit in the country regardless of position by a number of publications including Parade Magazine.

So why is this year's class "below average?"
by Kip Earlywine on Feb 1, 2012 10:09 PM PST up reply actions
Or rather, why is it not balanced in your view?
Shouldn’t it be enough that we got a ton of good players?
by Kip Earlywine on Feb 1, 2012 10:10 PM PST up reply actions
I'm happy with it
If this were an NFL draft, and you got 4-5 players with 1st or 2nd round grades on your draft board, but missed out on filling a couple needs in the process, you may experience some short term pain, but taking that approach in the long term is going to lead to very good things.
Last year’s draft by the Seahawks was widely panned by pundits. They didn’t get a QB. They didn’t get a legit starting D-lineman or pass rusher. Out of a big list of needs, they only addressed one (offensive line) definitively. And yet that class produced 4 immediate starters- and 1 of them is already playing near an all-pro level. That draft class is a big reason why the Seahawks future looks very bright right now.
I agree that UW’s recruiting class kind of avoided the elephant in the room- the offensive and defensive lines. However, I think that the team’s biggest need (even if its a quiet one) was QB- since both Pete Carroll and Sark both strongly prefer to groom QBs for a couple years before starting them, and Keith Price will be gone after 2012 or 2013. If there was a year to go hard after a couple great QBs this was it, and UW was very successful. Cyler Miles rates very highly and and Lindquist is not far behind.
I also think WR was an unheralded need for Seattle. Kearse is leaving as is (I think) Aguilar. *Fun fact, Aguilar and Cyler Miles played for the same Denver High School. Keith Price was still relying on Kearse/Aguilar pretty heavily last year. If you lose 2 impact WR, its important to replace them. Going after Payton and Mickens made a lot of sense.
All in all, I think UW did fill some less publicized needs and filled them with really damn good players. They couldn’t address everything perfectly, and their in-state recruiting was a disaster from the start- probably because of the coaching flux as well as other things, but there could still be JuCo transfers, and maybe we’ll actually see some of those redshirted guys from last year step up. I trust Sark’s judgement and he put his priorities where he did for a reason. Overall, I’m very happy with how things turned out.

it's a good class in general...
…but we’re going to need to do better than 5th in the conference in recruiting to get to where we want to be. I know I know, recruiting rankings aren’t everything. But they’re not meaningless either.
The other thing is, this wasn’t a zero-sum game. Losing out on Garnett & Banner didn’t allow us to get Shaq & Miles & Lindquist – we should have had all of them. Getting those two guys would have gone a long way towards boosting this class to 3rd or 2nd in the conference.
The good news is, I think with the new blood on this staff, finishing 3rd (or better) in recruiting is a realistic possibility.
"we should have had all of them"
You kind of hit on my point though. Perhaps we are expecting too much? UW finished 4th in the Pac-12 this year, lost all 5 games against ranked opponents, fired much of its coaching staff in the middle of recruiting season, has not won more than 7 games in roughly a decade, and is only 3 years removed from a 0-12 season. I look at that context and think “5th place really isn’t so bad,” especially since UW is easily top 25 nationally. Of course it would be nice to get them all, but I don’t think that kind of mentality is realistic right now.
I think this was just a weird year and frankly I think UW dodged a huge bullet. People complain what we missed out on while forgetting how truly close this offseason came to being a complete disaster. I’m normally a glass-half-empty guy myself, but considering how bad things could have been, its very easy to be glass half full right now for me.

And the Ducks should have gotten Ndamukong Suh.
As much as I wish this wasn’t the case, just because a guy is local doesn’t mean we have the inside track.

Aguilar/Miles
Played for Mullen, but both from across town. Their coach actually just got fired and the rumors are that he was recruiting.
Just had a great interview with Cyler on KJR
Sounds like an awesome guy, was doing it from rehab too!
They can have as many "commitments" as they want.
They can only have 25 “signed” in each class. They can stuff a few kids in last years’ class if they were short of 25 by July of last year. They can also gray shirt as many as they need to next years’ class. Also, they can sign a ton of kids with grade problems that won’t make it into school. Miami then stuffs them on one of their pet JuCo’s, and saves them until later. As long as the math is right when they report to the NCAA in June or July, they can sign as many as they want. One year Huston Nutt signed like 39 kids. Yes – signed! The following year the SEC capped the number of signings. I don’t remember at what, but it is still over 25.
Goforth to UCLA
Leaves only Marsh thats considering us. That plus Sark saying we’re probably done means no major surprises probably
That gives UCLA
like 14 DB’s on scholarship – interesting.

I think you have to grade a class
on who you got, not who you didn’t get. Plus wiping the defensive coaching staff for promising guys looks good to us, but it’s still a big unknown for recruits to put their faith in for the biggest decision of their lives up to this point.
The best way to get recruits is to win and prove this is a program they should go to. As of yet on the defensive side we haven’t proven anything. I think Wilcox will do well and we’ll have a monster 2013 class.

There is a relationship between who you got and who you missed
… you can’t really separate them.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
I disagree
Given the status of this team even just a month ago, I’d consider this recruiting class to be the most pleasant surprise in years, and like Skeptical Dawg, I agree that it matters who we did get and less so who we didn’t.
I look at it this way: sometimes outstanding performance can create unrealistic and unfair expectations. Its not like Cardinals fans focus on the passes Larry Fitzgerald can’t pull in, because they know that a lesser WR wouldn’t even come close to making the play. If we are going to poo-poo 5-6 legitimately exciting prospects because we missed out on 1-2 other guys, guys we are lucky to even be in on, that seems really petty and short-sighted to me. We aren’t USC or Alabama. We’re a team 3 years removed from an 0-12 season.

Overall Balance
It is a pretty good class…and you can actually say it is miraculous considering where it was a month ago. My only criticism is the lack of a couple of big time offensive tackles, a tight end, and a big nose tackle. Sure…you can say we can get them next year but we have been saying that for a couple of years now.
I think Banner is going to develop into something pretty special…too bad we missed on him…he is a real good kid.
Brostek is truly underrated…I think he is a five star talent.

Agree with most of what you said
I think TE we can get next year, all the rest of the positions i’d like to get EVERY year. Look at where we were 2 weeks ago, let alone a month ago. I think who signed today along with the coaching staff we have will make for a special year. The combination packages for the defensive backfield are mind boggling, with a play maker like the SHAQALICIOUS lurking, I see good things on the horizon.

TE was going to be a tough sell this year
Everyone saw what ASJ could do, and they also saw fellow frosh in Hartvigson & Hudson getting the rest of the snaps. It’ll get a little easier for the 2013 class to sell a TE on coming here since they’ll have 2 years (at minimum) distance between themselves and the current guys dominating the depth charts.
Price's monster year didn't disuade Miles or Lindquist.

Not if one wins the back-up
who will almost certainly get playing time and spend eligibility.
by Skeptical Dawg on Feb 1, 2012 10:51 PM PST up reply actions
Price has two years of eligibility left.
There will be at least two years between the two commits and him in every scenario.
by bigtrain21 on Feb 1, 2012 11:31 PM PST via Android app up reply actions
ideally neither has to play this upcoming year
Knock on wood Keith Price stays healthy, but hopefully if someone else needs to take snaps it will be Derrick Brown and we won’t need either Lindquist or Miles.
But if we do, that doesn’t mean whoever sees the field in 2012 can’t redshirt in 2013…
That actually might be a great solution
Have one of them play their Freshman year and the other play in their sophomore year. Hopefully we will have some blowout wins to get each of them playing time in their respective years. That is not to forget Brown either who can make himself part of the equation if he beats them both out for backup.
by bigtrain21 on Feb 1, 2012 11:39 PM PST via Android app up reply actions
True
That is what I am rooting for. I am just making the point that we do use their redshirts it would be better if they happened in different years to maximize their game experience.

Thanks guys
I find it almost overwhelming how much insightful UW information this site has provided the last few days. Its been a lot of fun to follow. Thanks to John Berkowitz, kirkd, and others for providing so much great content and information.
I’m optimistic about UW showing further improvement in 2012 and I’m really looking forward to next year’s recruiting class with Wilcox/Lupoi and company having a full year to make UW the “place to be.”
You should stop by and chat more often!

Thanks Carl
Truth is I’ve been a lurker here for 3-4 years now, just haven’t felt much urge to comment until this offseason which has had so much turmoil which has really generated some interesting discussion to say the least. Its nice seeing some familiar faces from Fieldgulls.
I really need to spend my time writing instead of commenting though. Its draft season and I’m making Rob do too much of the work at Seahawks draft blog. : P
