Da 411

Mickens lacks size for the outside receiver position, but he is ideal for the slot and return game. He has excellent field vision and good quickness. He has above average hands and knows how to find the open spots in a defensive zone. He has a good sense for setting up his blocks in the return game, and despite blazing top end speed, is still capable of making the big play. – Scott Kennedy, National Recruiting Analyst

hmm, Huffman is tweeting that the decision hasn't actually been made yet

As of a few minutes ago, Brandon Huffman says the announcement hasn’t actually happened yet. Hope this wasn’t Enyeart jumping the gun with bad info…

…Enyeart says Mickens already called the coaches, and a family member gave him the scoop. Be nice to see it officially confirmed from his announcement ceremony though, just to be sure.

From reading the scouting reports...

It sounds like Payton is the new Kearse and Mickens is the smaller/quicker new Aguilar.

I’m okay with that.

by huskies2010 on Jan 31, 2012 7:58 PM PST reply actions

Mickens reminds me more of the high school version of DeSean Jackson actually.

Payton actually reminds me more of Kasen Williams, though I am unsure if his leaping ability is quite like Williams’.

by Carl Shinyama on Jan 31, 2012 8:05 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I some times scout players for the NFL draft as a hobby

When DeSean Jackson was entering the draft, I scouted him a bit. I can definitely see the size and style similarities between the two, though Jackson had a better ability to blow the top off the defense on the outside. Of course, I must add the disclaimer of whether Mickens is as dynamic as Jackson was in college remains to be seen.

I don't know

if it’s really a hobby and he puts a lot of time into it, he might know as much, if not more than some of the professionals. Video, especially uncut game film, is just as valuable as watching guys in camps and seeing them play live.

Truth be told, you only really need a pilot when stuff breaks (like an autopilot, or an engine quits, the hydraulics fail or a thousand other things). Pilot = Insurance.

Yep, I work on U-2s

Not funny story. I was on my way to Saudi Arabia and in the terminal at Osan AB in Korea. For some reason they made everyone leave the terminal. I walked around the corner and looked at the runway and there was an U-2 on its belly. Landing gear failed. A couple of hours later some guys from my shop had managed to detach our nose and were wheeling it back to the shop. Bent but not broken.

Short version, no autopilot, no fly.

Rob Staton is not a well respected scout by any stretch of the imagination. He’s a guy from England who started a blog. He’s also a contrarian, which is fine if you are right now and then.

Rob Staton has had a few years to hit on some of his projections and he hasn’t. If he were our GM, we would be in a world of shit.

That about sums it up, yes.

That sums it up, but what I will be doing differently, is prognosticating, not just how he will translate to the NFL but to specific blocking schemes.

Specifically, the Seahawks, who run primarily a zone-blocking scheme. I will break down plays containing offensive alignment and defensive alignments.

Believe it or not, but not a lot of pro football fans follow the college level as much as they do with the pro level.

Meh, it strikes me as being similar to the Las Vegas betting lines

In that they’re based on general perception than full-on context and an actual projection of what’s to come, not that projecting what’s to come would be easy or an exact science, so I treat it as such.

I do agree that it can help a coach sell their program better when they’re involved in recruiting for the next year.

by Carl Shinyama on Jan 31, 2012 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

honestly

so are scouting reports. Class projections are based on scouting reports so do you like them or not?

by CODawg on Jan 31, 2012 11:15 PM PST up reply actions

Yes and no.

Yes because some scouting reports are based on general perception, but also no, become some are quite comprehensive, having scrutinized the player to the smallest details.

However, national rankings are not based on scouting reports. They are based on star ratings and/or the number of recruits that you have signed. Very few scouting services project the entire class for an entire school.

Based on the post here I saw earlier about how the scout points system works

Jaydon Mickens is a four star recruit, which is worth 120 points, and the 45th ranked WR, which is worth 55 points. So altogether he is worth about 175 points. I’m not 100% sure about this being the right amount, but it would move us up to 20th right behind Stanford.

That place is god awful. My sister moved there after she got married. She thinks it’s funny to buy my kids Oregon Ducks pillow pets and mini license plates or whatever. Anyway, Eugene is disgusting – crawling with homeless people, dirty, the people are just weird, lots of white trash. No investment in their infrastructure or schools, it’s decaying. What I am getting at is that nobody would miss Eugene if you bombed it, but I would probably miss my sister. I’d at least miss my nephew, although he’s only 2 so it’s not like we’re real tight. Still, ducks fans have set the bar so low for human conduct I think we can all justify dropping a bomb on them, it just better be a big one or I don’t think they’ll even notice.

Tied with Navy in our 1st RoseBowl,

I as I recall reading. Coach was Enoch Bagshaw. I think 14 to 14 was the final.

Agreed.

We’ve got an outstanding class of WR right now. Needs now are elsewhere.

Get a commit from Beaver. Maybe 1 or 2 more surprises.

Get that Fax from all the kids on our list tomorrow. That’s the big one. I hope to god that Oregon sports radio station is full of crap and just butt hurt like the rest of the Oregon nation that we landed Shaq.

by Regent Denali on Jan 31, 2012 8:44 PM PST reply actions

They apparently are.

Supposedly, Shaq Thompson is going to be on Softy’s show tomorrow at 12:20

by Carl Shinyama on Jan 31, 2012 8:50 PM PST up reply actions

I hope it's right after he sends the fax in.

I just heard some Portland sports radio station, “The Fan” is trying to claim Thompson is wavering on his commitment to UW. Could be a bunch of garbage from butt hurt Ducks, but I will not rest easy till the fax is in.

We’ll have a former Beaver too

Don't know that I have EVER

seen so many un-committed kids the day before LOI day.

Honestly don’t know/understand what these kids are attempting here, but doesn’t it seems risky to let all the college programs fill their roster?

Oh well, my wish list is down to:

DE Dylan Cozens
OLB Moana Ofahengaue
CB Randall Goforth
CB Brandon Beaver

by onewoodwacker on Jan 31, 2012 9:03 PM PST reply actions

just some vague rumors at Dawgman.com

Dawgs are still chasing some guys committed elsewhere, and there could be a surprise tomorrow.

Thing to keep in mind is surprises can work both ways (as we saw with the news about Walker to UCLA tonight) – nothing is official until the LOI comes in over the fax machine.

Cross your fingers we don’t get any nasty surprises tomorrow…

I actually just watched the 1st episode

It’s exactly the same as the US version, like almost word for word (like the Office when they made the US version). I’d imagine that the first season follows pretty much the same story arc, then they probably branch off a bit after that, but I’m just guessing.

by thecassino on Jan 31, 2012 10:43 PM PST up reply actions

I gotta say

For a “pilot” show or 1st show, had to be in the top 5 of all time “pilots”. Sooo much happened in the first show it felt like forever for the next week to get there to watch the next one.

Yeah

The pilot did a good job of establishing all the characters, and there are a ton. Oddly, the one person they didn’t really do justice to was Frank. Took a few episodes to really latch onto him.

by Cad on Feb 1, 2012 12:43 AM PST reply actions

As per Sark's blog

http://coachsark.com/blog/2012/02/

Wanted to give everyone a quick update–it’s 11:20 pm in the office and we’re still working hard as we’re just hours away from receiving Letters of Intent. While it was pretty cool for the past couple of years, we will not be doing the fax cam this year. We’ve decided to do something different this year in order to put more of a spotlight on the student-athletes who will become Huskies. Tune in here in the morning to see what we’re doing this year for Signing Day!
