Zach Banner to USC

We all wish Zach the best even though we are are all disappointed about his choice. I hope everything works out for him down their except when he is playing against the Huskies. If any of you guys are upset blame the coaches...not Zach...they completely blew it with this fine young man by taking him for granted until the last month of his recruitment.

This pretty much seals the deal on the most disappointing in state recruiting season in the history of Husky football. Like I said blame the coaches because they really screwed this up.

It is what it is…it is the type of class that has the ability to ruin a promising young coaching career.

Agree

If Sark didn’t get the UW/WIAA Coaches/Players disconnect before – he heard it loud and clear after this class bolted the state.

by onewoodwacker on Jan 30, 2012 4:36 PM PST up reply actions

It seems abit early to write off this whole class.

Although the instate recruiting sucked, I think it is way premature to say this is the type of class that gets a coach fired. For the first time in a decade, we have a class that for the most part can be redshirted. Add the fact that 18 kids did not play last year and you can see the depth being built. I think I will wait a few years to judge this class.

While very disappointed in the whiffs and defections…I’m not willing to downgrade any commit at this point until they prove themselves unworthy…

I'm stoked about this class

I think we got some good lunch pail guys in Dean/English/Eldrenkamp

I think we got a steal in RB Erich Wilson

Two STUD QB and what’s shaping up to be a nice WR class.

I think in three years we’re all going to be pleasantly surprised about how effective this class really is.

by murchy on Jan 30, 2012 6:19 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, our OL class isn't bad actually

Obviously would have looked a lot better had Garnett & Banner joined up, but it’s not like Eldrenkamp, Dean and English are chopped liver. And if Brostek signs as expected, that’s a pretty good class.

by kirkd on Jan 30, 2012 9:42 PM PST up reply actions

Precisely.

Even without the addition of Banner or Garnett, I’m pretty content with their O-line class.

Should Brostek choose Washington, the Huskies will have two very powerful blockers in Eldrenkamp and Brostek. I would expect UW to be in good shape, especially in run-blocking.

Tough to compete with Compton!

USC is a great school with a proud tradition and I am sure Zach will do well there. It was only a few months ago I was leaving a disappointing Husky game down there and watched a guy jump out of a car, punch a man in the face, then punch a woman who yelled at him them jump back in his car. I am sure Zach won’t see this excitement daily while he is living down there, but I am sure he will enjoy living in Compton instead of Seattle.

Now, all we hear is how Sark can’t keep the instate kids home. I can’t blame him, he tried by firing the D-staff and hiring a tremendous one (I hope). The perception won’t fade until a year from now depending on who he gets, looking ahead, so far all I’ve heard of around here as the epic recruit is Max from Skyline and I don’t see him coming with the QB’s we are getting. So the reputation could build as he only wants Cal kids. IMO

I'm already resigned to losing Browne.

Honestly, though, I don’t really care. We’re stocked at QB for a while, and his comments about Miles and Lindquist affecting his decision scream prima donna to me.

not if

He truly wants to play right away

by CODawg on Jan 30, 2012 5:01 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Maybe.

But he’s probably a 5-star guy next season. One of, if not the, top QB’s on the west coast. You can count the number of guys like that that ended up at WSU on one finger, and he grew up in Walla Walla.

A lot is going to change for Browne over the next year as his recruitment really picks up. And even at WSU, he’ll probably sit behind Halliday for two years.

by Sundodger on Jan 30, 2012 5:10 PM PST up reply actions

I see the comparison as QB's.

I don’t know much about Browne as a person. Seems like an intelligent enough kid. But Drew is one of the most humble athletes that you could ever hope to meet. I have no idea if Browne’s ego is going to want something bigger than Pullman can offer or not. I don’t mean that as any sort of knock whatsoever, it’s just the case for a lot of west side kids.

We’ll see.

by John Berkowitz on Jan 30, 2012 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

source?

John do you have any facts, quotes, links to articles that say “UW took him for granted until the last month”. There is a clear difference between a recruit wanting to go some where else and the staff taking him for granted. We offered him early so he was on our radar from the get go. I think that he wanted to go to his favorite child hood school growing up and wanted to go to southern california and get away from the NW.

If we start losing top in state recruits to oregon, oregon st or wsu then we have a problem. That means they wanted to stay near family and friends. If we lose kids to stanford, notre dame, and USC I think it is just kids that want to experience another part of a country at a different school. Simple as that.

by DAWGFAN87 on Jan 30, 2012 4:07 PM PST via mobile reply actions

After LOI day...

We will review the mistakes the staff made in the eyes of the local recruits…I don’t have the time to detail it right now but the biggest complaint is that they spent a lot more energy in Cal than at home. All that being said …they solved a lot of the problems when they fired the defensive staff…lots of dead wood removed andvreplaced by aces.

The one that was primarily responsible for the south Puget Sound (Banner, Garnett, and Dozier) is gone.

by Sundodger on Jan 30, 2012 4:50 PM PST up reply actions

sounds good

But I truly feel that until we lose elite in state kids that the coaches identify that they want to another northwest school like Jonathan Stewert to Oregon, then the problem is not as big as people are making it seem. You guys act like going to Southern Cal for college does not appeal to a large amount of kids or that getting a degree from Stanford does not mean something to kids.

by DAWGFAN87 on Jan 30, 2012 4:35 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

those big-time schools have always been competition for the top in-state guys...

…and normally we still get them. ASJ and Kasen could have gone anywhere in the country. Locker could have gone anywhere. And on and on – most kids have an interest in looking outside their normal horizons. And in most cases, those kids can be convinced that staying home is the best option for them.

They had less than a month to develop relationships with these guys, although Tosh already had some, but I would imagine it is a tough sell, even for him, to get California guys to come to Washington after they have already committed to that school. I am trying to stay calm here and let these new defensive guys play the long game.

they'll get in line either way...

…if history is any indication. These are significantly better recruiters than the guys they replaced, with the possible exception of Martin over Heyward (though not by much). Tosh may not be quite as successful here as he was at Cal, but his success there wasn’t strictly about Cal and his connections as an alum.

by kirkd on Jan 30, 2012 5:59 PM PST up reply actions

I always felt like

recruits were thinking “I don’t want to play defense for the UW”

The players didn’t look like they were having fun at all. The DB playing 10 yards off the line. So many times I heard about the lack of emotion coming from the Defense.

Sports mirrors real life in that there is always that exciting balance of risk/reward. Sure you’re going to get beat over the top but if you play aggressive you’re going to get Pick 6 as well.

I’m guessing that Wilcox/Sirmon (Sircox ??) will emphasize no freelancing, flow to the ball and know your assignments and actually let the kids play.

"...Reminds me of a CRN recruiting list..."

Yup!

I’m having a HARD time dealing with some the UW football fans today – those who say “no big deal/chill-out/next year”. I agree with John Berkowitz – this “in-state” recruiting class failure was of epic proportions. This class was – IMHO – a turning point class. Not only in recruiting but on-the-field results as well.

There is NO doubt that players like Josh Garnett, Zach Banner, Caleb Smith, Keivarae Russell, Cedric Dozier, Walker Williams, Dustin Stanton, Sawyer Powell, Caleb Saulo, B.J. Salmonson, Ryan Lewis, Jacob Tuivaiave, etc could have helped us win football games. Amazingly, there are some here we never even got around to offering.

I tell you, remember the names Jacob Tuivaiave a 6-4/250 OLB out of Washington HS, B.J. Salmonson a 6-5/270 OT out of Nooksack Valley HS – I’ve seen these kids play and I tell you – freakin they are ballers!

by onewoodwacker on Jan 30, 2012 5:30 PM PST up reply actions

I've been trying to tell myself to chill out and relax...

and while I believe that Sark has already taken steps to fix the problem and can recover, that’s the problem…he’s got one more thing to recover from. Instead of landing a bunch of in-state blue chippers who could propel him onto the nation stage, he’s going to have to work to recover from missing out on those guys.

Another miss puts him on a serious hot seat, this miss doesn’t ruin him, but it will lengthen the programs turn around time by another couple of years.

by mwalter on Jan 30, 2012 5:44 PM PST up reply actions

it sucks to have missed out on so many great and good in state prospects

You never want to give away guys that you should have an advantage in landing. And yes, we are currently low on some areas of need – OT, DT and CB.

That said, let’s also not start flying the other direction and calling this class a disaster. Any class that lands Jeff Lindquist, Cyler Miles, Shaq Thompson, Jordan Payton, Kendyl Taylor, Ryan McDaniel, Shane Brostek and possibly Jaydon Mickens – that’s not a failure. Unbalanced maybe. A big miss on some guys that should have been shoe-ins, certainly. But we still stand to land a lot of really great players.

If you look at our roster, here’s what we have:

Kevin Smith – hurt at the end of last year
Kasen Williams – stud
Cody Bruns – good depth, not starter quality
James Johnson – good when healthy, been really nicked up for two years in a row
DiAndre Campbell – hasn’t really seen the field yet
Jamaal Jones – hasn’t seen the field
Josh Perkins – hasn’t seen the field

We’ve got to decide how successful we want to be because playing on a national stage means a lot of WA kids that should be playing for UW won’t because we’re keeping CA pipelines open.

I want kids that want to be here – bleed purple and want to be a “Husky”. I think we all need to sit back and wait to LOI day and just be happy with the kids that sign that day they are the Huskies of the future.

by lorenzothedog on Jan 30, 2012 7:27 PM PST reply actions   2 recs

oh come on

Most kids have a hard time picking a school out of the number of great choices they have. Most kids that end up becoming Huskies didn’t grow up thinking “I’m going to be a Husky no matter what!” Most kids develop their love for their school after they commit, and as they leave blood, sweat and tears behind on the playing field with their teammates.

Shaq Thompson is seriously considering a few schools, including Washington. If he doesn’t pick Washington, that means you didn’t really want him anyway? Really?

I agree.

I just didn’t have the energy to say what you did, so thank you.

by Carl Shinyama on Jan 30, 2012 9:33 PM PST up reply actions

great observation!

These guys really are still ‘kids’ in some ways, and they are under a LOT of pressure. I both have sympathy for them, and hope their decisions work out well enough for them individually.

I do naturally hope more of them start to have better feelings for our program; that will play out over time, and the only things I can do as a fan is be ‘be nice’ online and send $$$ to the Athletic Dept . . .

The sky didnt fall

This class will be a star let down but will be solid depth in a lot of places. I also think that there are some great pieces already signed and some gem’s to come. ps. you cant hate duck fans ( i do hate duck fans) for the same bashing you are doing. Go Dawgs

Shane Brostek

Some Nike U fan on the dawgman board is saying that he is confident that Brostek is going to Phil Knight CC.

Hope that he is incorrect…

What are you hearing about Brostek?

by Udubb on Jan 30, 2012 10:07 PM PST up reply actions

My comments are for the delusional *uck fans

Most believe that they are getting every recruit no matter what. You, obviously aren’t in that faction. But yes there are some who claim all they need to do is give an offer and they are coming.

Yes, we're delusional and think we're getting every recruit no matter what.

The entire SEC is soon to be relegated to division III status because every recruit is COMIN’ TA OREGON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wait, Huskies – WE’LL NEVER AGAIN LOSE ANOTHER GAME THIS CENTURY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still think you guys are fun

While a lot of Duck fans seem to have a short memory, for which I’m not much inclined to be harsh, many also seem to have a sense of humor.

Where have you found these people saying these things, though?

Things like that.

I'm not buying it

A guy who regularly posts about recruits in Hawai’i (and I’m pretty sure does some newspaper coverage of High School football over there) posted that he heard from players on the Hawaii team that Brostek told them he was going to be a Dawg while on his official visit this past weekend. I trust him more than some random Duck fan…don’t let the trolls get you down.

I'll still always be a fan of Zach Banner

he’s a very humble, respectful, and respectable young man. hopefully he’ll get earn the success he deserves both in college and in the NFL, and also after his playing days are over. Good luck Zach!

I like him a lot too

I just wish he’d decided Washington was the better place for him. I think we can place a lot of blame at the feet of Sark for not having the right guys in charge of South Sound recruiting efforts this year. I think Zach could have been convinced to stay home.

I also wonder if Sark utilized Romar as much as he should have in the effort…

were we really even in on Shaq prior to Lupoi’s defection?

by Will Kier on Jan 30, 2012 10:12 PM PST up reply actions

yes

We were always his #2, and it was close. When Wilcox was hired, and especially after Tosh defected, that was enough for Shaq to re-think things.

SB Nation App

Hey John,

I guess this is just as good as any place to ask but is there any way to make fanshots viewable on the app? The Shaq Thompson fanshot is not viewable on the app and the only reason I saw it is because I viewed the mobile page.
