Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Where the UW stands currently with remaining recruits

With just a few days until Signing Day on Wednesday, the first day recruits can send binding LOI (or slightly less-binding financial aid agreements - hint hint Oregon prospects), here's the latest on Husky recruiting targets, gleaned from various sources (and know that many of these situations are fluid and could change between now and Wednesday):

Star-divide

OT Zach Banner: All the insiders are saying they’re hearing USC; if he picks the UW, it will be a major surprise
RB/WR/CB Kenny Walker: Has all but committed based off what he posted to his Facebook last night
S Shaq Thompson: Things look positive for UW after he took a 2nd, unofficial visit this weekend; he’s far from a sure thing, but the signs seem to be trending in our direction
WR Jordan Payton: Also took a 2nd, unofficial visit this weekend with his #CalGang buddy Shaq while their other #CalGang buddy Walker was on his official; seems likely he’ll pick the UW
C/G Shane Brostek: As John noted, some word from connected guys in Hawai’i that Shane was telling Hawaii players on his official visit there that he’ll be picking the UW
DE Dylan Cozens: Is down to UW, Arizona and Boise State; variety of reports out there about where he might be leaning; seems like the UW has a decent shot here
WR Jaydon Mickens: Another former #CalGang guy, had a great visit to UW, then was blown away on his visit to Oklahoma State and seemed like a strong lean there; latest word is though that he wants to stay on the West Coast, which bodes well for the UW – maybe Shaq, Payton & Walker have turned Mickens back to the UW?
DT/DE Pio Vatuvei – Committed to USC, but really likes the UW; question is whether his offer to USC is conditional based on who else potentially commits in the next few days – might end up at UW if his offer is no longer valid from USC
QB Cyler Miles – Unless Kiesau bombed his in-home visit with Miles, Cyler will stick with his UW commitment
CB Randall Goforth – Had a good visit to the UW, but then had his official to ASU and said he likes this staff better than the old one which he’d committed to; UW may still have a chance, but I’d bet on him sticking with ASU
CB Brandon Beaver – He’s had a lot of fun with the recruiting process, but all along he’s given every indication he’s a Husky, and of course there were the reports (which he denied) that he committed to the staff a couple weeks ago; it’d be a big surprise if he ended up elsewhere, but you never know
CB Cleveland Wallace – Committed to Oregon St, but considering UW with Heyward moving north; I think he’ll stick with OSU, but there’s some chatter the UW is still in it
DE Alonzo Williams – Texas A&M commit, just had his official there this weekend – I’d be pretty surprised if he flipped
S Devian Shelton – Oregon St. commit, considered UW after Heyward was hired, but sounds like he’s sticking with his commitment to the Beavers

Mickens

Actually a USC commit that probably was told they wouldn’t have room him along with Jordan Payton.

I too think Goforth is sticking at ASU. I wish we could have nabbed Shelton from OSU along with Wallace but those guys saw something in Corvallis they liked.

I’m not too worried about Miles. I think he’ll be a Dawg but if he isn’t we’re good with Lindquist and we’d go that much harder after Max Brown for 2013

Would love to get Cozens out of Arizona. That could be pretty tough but he is announcing live with Kendyl Taylor.

Shaq and Brostek would seal the deal and I’d be pretty happy with this class. I think we’re close to truly being competitive in every game

I would rather go hard after Liufau of Bellarmine

more of a project than Browne but ceiling could be higher and he is enough of an athlete if QB doesn’t work out he could move. I also think Max Browne will not want to wait behind a SR Keith Price and RS Fr Miles and Lindquist hot on the backup job, and thats not to detract from D. Brown either.
In any event, I will trust in Sark getting the guy he wants.

max browne

my friends little brother goes to skyline and is friends with max browne. appearently max told him he wants to go play out of state so i’m not really holding a lot of faith that he’s gonna come here.

I cannot blame kids

Seeing the world or at the very least a different state is appealing. Shaq isn’t wedded to playing in California so why should all WA kids be wedded to playing in WA?

Tit for Tat.

by murchy on Jan 30, 2012 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

not to dismiss your source, but kids say that all the time early in the recruiting process

Doesn’t surprise me at all – kids often initially talk about wanting to “get away” and see another part of the country. And then, as they get closer to making their decision, they start realizing how much value there is in staying closer to home.

Doesn’t mean Browne will pick the Huskies – there are plenty of other factors that will come into play – but I wouldn’t put too much weight in what he’s saying now, unless it was an unequivocal “I really don’t like the UW and there’s no way I’ll consider them”.

by kirkd on Jan 30, 2012 4:45 PM PST up reply actions

yeah i don't think it was anything like that

and to be fair i didn’t talk to him personally, i’m sure he’ll consider us. To be honest i feel pretty good about our QB situation whether we get him or not.

by charles188 on Jan 30, 2012 7:44 PM PST up reply actions

he may end up scared-off by our QB depth

But if that’s the case, I’m not sure he’s the guy I want. I want the kids like Emtman that aren’t scared off by competition.

Sark needs to sell him on the idea that he’ll develop Browne for the NFL better than any other coach in the country (and he’s got a track record that can support that), that QB’s can get injured and he could be a play away from seeing the field at any time, that you never know when kids will transfer, and that if you believe in yourself, you’ll believe that you can beat out the guys in front of you.

And if Browne isn’t buying it? Sark can move on to the next great QB prospect.

Where's the beef?

I’ve never seen an Offense with a Center, QB, TE, RB and 7 WR’s – and a Defense with a NG, 2 DB’s and 8 Safeties!

Should be fun – HA!! :-)

With seemingly

Every “BIG” on our board “leaning” somewhere other that the UW – who are we looking at for LT & DT Line help.

When you consider that we got 1 OT last season in Dexter Charles and 1 DT in Danny Shelton (some say Tupou could/will play DT).

I don’t see Dexter as a LT in this league and if we go to the 3-4, does a 6-1 Tupou really fit at DT/DE or will he play NG?

LB Poly DL Alonzo Williams has re-affirmed his commitment to #Texas A&M after visiting over the weekend

Well the kid is from Texas

He’s merely going home to play football.

by murchy on Jan 30, 2012 1:08 PM PST up reply actions

yep

He’s a recent transplant to Long Beach from Louisiana. So him deciding he likes Texas A&M and College Station better than playing the Pac-12 isn’t so much of a surprise.

Too bad though – kid has great film, looks like he’ll be a good one.

I'm Optimistic

We are getting everyone on this list besides Williams, Shelton, Goforth, Wallace and maybe Banner (but I think we get Banner).

by PurpleHeart on Jan 30, 2012 1:12 PM PST reply actions

I count 6, plus Z Banner

JB doesn’t think we will get 25, but if I read Kirk right, we are well along the way. And that doesn’t count a surprise LOI. My 6 are Walker, Shaq, Payton,Brostek, Miles, and Beaver. Actually they’re Kirk’s 6.

by dawgdude on Jan 30, 2012 1:19 PM PST reply actions

we'll see

Hate to count chickens before they hatch, but I feel pretty good about:

Walker
Brostek
Beaver
Payton
Miles

Reasonably optimistic about Shaq, guardedly optimistic about Cozens, somewhat optimistic about Mickens. And Vatuvei might fall into our laps depending on how things shake out for USC.

Greatly hope you are correct, and you darn sure understand this process better than I

The cycle gives me heartburn, but I understand it’s necessary. Hope new coaches help us do better in next few cycles.

Time to sit back and relax

At this point, we are going to sign who we are going to sign. It would be great if we got the big names, but there has to be some faith that Sark is getting players that he wants. It may not be a “WOW” class, but with recruiting we will have to see how it works out.

That being said, next years class will have to bring in some talent on the line. We can’t go 2 years signing only 3-4 OL recruits. The Cascade line can only last for so long.

As for the DL, it is the hardest position to recruit to. But we do have players and balance on the DL (Tokolahi, Potoa’e, Lagafuina, Shelton). Not the deepest, but serviceable.

by Benno on Jan 30, 2012 1:27 PM PST reply actions

And

recruiting is only half the battle. Hopefully the new defensive staff has the ability to coach up all the talent that is here. I won’t completely be sold on these hires until I see marked improvement from the players on the field.

by SeaHuskies on Jan 30, 2012 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

CB

I think we really lack at CB only one this year and two last year(counting Simms) we have 8 linemen commits plus a preferred walk-on for our linemen this year.

by lorenzothedog on Jan 30, 2012 1:55 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, definitely a possibility

Especially if we close with Payton and possibly Mickens.

by kirkd on Jan 30, 2012 5:53 PM PST up reply actions

I would’ve thought that since UW will be going to a 3-4, LB would be a more logical move (if they were to move him…)

by BC Dawg on Jan 30, 2012 8:58 PM PST up reply actions

We aren't going to a 3-4 . . .

we will use the 3-4 more often, but it won’t be our base defense. We will probably be more of a multiple formation defense.

Had not heard that

Sample would be a pretty big corner but I guess not bigger than Sims – had heard that Wilcox likes bigger corners so makes since – but wasn’t Richardson a bigger corner how did that work out just sayn. We need HELP at corner hope someone(s) can step up.

Just didn’t have the consistency.

I think he could have been the equal of EJ Savannah on the outside…terrible thing is…we really didn’t have a better CB than him for most of his career.

Seahawks-style approach – he could be our Browner/Sherman.

No rest for the coaches

I don’t think you will see a group of coaches who will work harder to recruit than these guys.

The biggest recruiting pitch is going to be the product on the field. If we can get these defense to play respectable football we will be an 8-9 win team and ranked at some point in the top 25.

Then they can go on the road and point to the improvement of the team. They will also have to beat either of Oregon, Stanford or LSU (Unlikely) to show the recruits that this team is not just improving but is competing with the elite teams in the conference and for LSU in the country.

by MNDawgfan on Jan 30, 2012 1:56 PM PST up reply actions

good point

And depending on who you listen to, he’s either certain for Stanford or he’s decided to stick with his commitment to the UW.

jeff lindquist

just watched his highlight clip and i have to say he looks like the spitting image of jake locker, same size, same constantly rolling out to throw. great arm runs over and through guys. it’s like almost exactly the same.

I think some of us locals have gotten a bit gooey eyed about Miles but Lindquist is a true stud with great mobility and an arm that can get it done.

im not gonna say ones better than the other

honestly they both have looked great and it fells good to get two elite qbs in one class but i have this feeling that jeff is gonna be the one that ends up the starter.

i think he'll develop into what locker could have been

had locker had more than 2 years in a pro style system.

yep

Lindquist isn’t the physical runner that Jake was, but he’s more refined as a passer coming into college. I’m really, really excited about Lindquist, and really looking forward to seeing him and Miles battle it out with Brown for the backup spot to Price.

There's no reason the current staff can not mend fences.

Need to start with some very public statements by University President & AD, followed by a continuing public presence of the original DawgFather, as much as his health and good will can support. The ill will started w/ how Hedges treated him; getting well should start w/ him as well.

After that I’m not a great source of ideas on details, other than we ought to have dedicated AD staffers ACTIVELY working to solicit the presence of ulumni atheletes attending events at ALL of our various teams.

I do think we’re missing a bet if we’re not actively inviting our football veterans to the sidelines.

by HuskyInExile on Jan 30, 2012 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

regarding Lincoln

Rather interesting that Lincoln supposedly played such a big role in Zach’s decision, since we were led to believe that Lincoln had little to no contact with Zach until recently.

really depends

I’m not going to pretend to know the inner dynamics of what’s gone on there. I could easily see where Zach would want to get to know him. I could also easily see a scenario where Zach tells Lincoln to pound sand.

Who cares? Zach is gone and he now becomes just a nameless, faceless opponent to Washingtonians.

the only thing I want to see now is Sark standing tall explaining how he pissed the in-state talent away and his plan for fixing it.

Dude is just a kid. If he wants a relationship with his father, that’s great. Excellent even. If Lincoln really wants to be a good dad, that’s great. Sucks that he is not a Dawg but I’m not veen that selfish. Good luck to him, hope he loses to us every year!

The family and man that raised you is here in Washington – not in LA not sure if I would have based my decision on my estranged father. I thought Banner was real close to his family.

At 6ft 9in I think he is right on the cusp of being to tall to play Fball may have a brighter future in Bball – I think UW Fball with Romar and Husky Bball would have been better fit.
