He buries some nice kicks

Would like to see game time stuff. Lots of guys can hit the long stuff on the practice field, but this bodes well. Welcome aboard Travis!

Indeedy

Very nice kicks. Great to see we found a solid experienced replacement for Folk. Welcome to UW Travis.

by Regent Denali on Jan 26, 2012 10:12 PM PST up reply actions

Relax

Believe we have excellent odds at landing some of those names. Shaq Thompson too.

Check this out.

Arik Armstead says he is now officially completed with his recruiting as of tonight. And guess who was there today?

Sac Bee – "Armstead and his father Guss left a nearby hotel where Washington coach Steve Sarkisian and six other coaches – an army – put on a power-point display in a rented conference room. There were also several Armstead jerseys on display, No. 9. Armstead likes that number because it honors his late uncle Willie “Buggy” Armstead, who played football at Chico State a generation ago."

Armstead said he enjoyed all his home visits as they bounced ideas off of each other. He was impressed with the Washington set up, and joked that it would have been nice to take one of those jerseys home.

by Regent Denali on Jan 26, 2012 10:10 PM PST up reply actions

Damn, a powerpoint and an army of coaches?

Nice to know the staff is pulling out the stops coming down the stretch. I think we are going to land at least 2 of those names I listed (plus Armstead).

by kschimke on Jan 26, 2012 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

At the very least, the "army of coaches" shows our commitment to recruiting.

It may not work out this year, but it shows promise for the future. This particular class may not work out, but I do not think it is the end of the world. It is important to remember we are still rebuilding and not everything is going to go our way. We can celebrate our recruiting wins, but it is too early to view any recruiting losses as detrimental to our potential success. That being said, we are absolutely heading in the right direction. And maybe this was just an atypical year. PSAs need to do what they want to do; sometimes going to UW just isn’t what they want. Some years that may aggregate to something undesirable to us. Other years, everything may work out beyond our expectations.

by johnnieday on Jan 27, 2012 2:49 AM PST up reply actions

good perspective.

Oddly, the relatively weak developing recruiting class was probably a factor leading to the selection of the new coaches.

Competition

I think he saw an opportunity to play qb and avoid competing against Parker, Sample, Shamburger, Stevenson, Glenn, Fellner , Freeney, Zeger and possibly Shaq daddy for playing time. It’s really a loaded position. I don’t blame the kid. I wish him the best.

Wow

The kid has some delusions….Laramie is a dump by the way.

Ah John...

Not a fly-fisherman I take it?

The fishing is up North

The strip mining is down south.

Sadly

I’ve spent a lot of time in both river and mine…

by TualatinDawg on Jan 26, 2012 11:20 PM PST up reply actions

Is it possible we pulled the offer?

Wishful thinking on my part, as that would mean we have lots of other commitments we’re expecting, but it’s tough not to get excited!

by anupam on Jan 26, 2012 11:10 PM PST up reply actions

It could be mutual

His heart is at QB.

UW Dawg Pound - SBN Seattle

by John Berkowitz on Jan 26, 2012 11:17 PM PST up reply actions

True.

Just seems like such a weird decision. There have to be better QBs out there that Wyoming can get.

by anupam on Jan 26, 2012 11:28 PM PST up reply actions

not that surprising

he wanted to play QB and we didn’t offer. he honestly would have had a very difficult time getting on the field as a safety

last year wyoming recruited brett smith, a guy who wanted to go to UW but was never offered, and he had a pretty good season for a true frosh. they must have a decent eye for overlooked qb talent

by CAHusky on Jan 27, 2012 12:23 AM PST up reply actions

They also signed Adam Pittser

another guy who liked UW but never got an offer. Both are better prospects than Thompson at QB, but who knows, maybe he’ll just sit for a few years and develop nicely. We don’t play them and he wouldn’t here, so I hope he does great things.

by B Money on Jan 27, 2012 3:40 PM PST up reply actions

if QB doesn't work out

they (Wyo) have a safety. And safety is not a “need” position at UW.

by dawgdude on Jan 27, 2012 11:27 AM PST up reply actions

Well

He could be a great safety…but his chances of being a serviceable QB are minimal…we told him the truth..Wyoming obviously didn’t ..Cowboys win because he will be safety soon."

You have to think some kids realize they don't have pro potential.

And they rather spend their limited college years playing a position they truly enjoy playing. This may not be the case, but at the very least you have to applaud the man for following his heart.

by johnnieday on Jan 27, 2012 2:50 AM PST up reply actions

looks like he has one hell of a leg

although the stats from last season are a little troubling. 2/10 on field goals??

by CAHusky on Jan 27, 2012 12:31 AM PST reply actions

Most of his attempts were from >40 yards

All but two or three, I think, according to Condotta. Also worth noting that some were blocked (not sure how many), which isn’t necessarily his fault.

by anupam on Jan 27, 2012 12:17 PM PST up reply actions

Also, from Condotta's article

The kid is considered the # 3 kicking recruit in the nation by Scout. Aaaand, he came from the same kicking camp that gave us Mahan, and Coons was the best prospect in camp this year. I’ll trust their judgment over a sample size of 10 kicks any day.

by SeaHuskies on Jan 27, 2012 1:04 PM PST up reply actions

he is not rated at all by scout

the #3 ranking comes from another site

by CAHusky on Jan 27, 2012 6:43 PM PST up reply actions

i read that too

but still, if he can make it from 60 yards in practice, you would think he could make it from 40 in games

by CAHusky on Jan 27, 2012 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

true, but

it says that “some” kicks were blocked, not every kick he missed

by CAHusky on Jan 27, 2012 6:52 PM PST up reply actions

Still, if some of 8 are getting blocked

It’s a good bet that he was having to rush his kicks, which could be a cause for misses. Can’t discount snap and hold either. Without having seen his kicks, just gotta trust that there were reasons for the misses other than just being bad kicks, otherwise he wouldn’t have been offered.

by thecassino on Jan 27, 2012 6:57 PM PST up reply actions

Great

We needed to replace Nick Folk with a good kicker, he looks like he has the potential. Welcome to the Dawgs!

by datboyeddiep on Jan 27, 2012 5:43 AM PST reply actions

Always worth remembering:

We (The Dub) have been a “pipeline” school for Lakes High School’s best for the past 2-3 decades. We have NEVER lost a Lakes recruit that we have offered. Should Zach and Cedric go, they would be the first and that is a LOT of history to un-fold.

Regardless what the pundits say – I personally think they will both stay right here.

by onewoodwacker on Jan 27, 2012 7:04 AM PST reply actions

Hope you're right.

I think it was cassino that mentioned it in a different thread – picking up those two would give the UW 3/5 blue chippers from the state this year. That’d be quite the turn from what things were looking like a month ago.

by Sundodger on Jan 27, 2012 10:39 AM PST up reply actions

good chance on Banner

I think Cedric is gone. Armstead will announce Sunday. Around 3 I think at his church. Lets go Dawgs I could use a woof

by CODawg on Jan 28, 2012 6:45 AM PST up reply actions

Everyone is thinking Armstead and Shaq to Cal

I think they want to play together, so hopefully the UW push and the talking they’ve been doing means a UW commitment.

by B Money on Jan 28, 2012 12:09 PM PST up reply actions

Dozier is taking an official to UW this weekend

Once Kiesau came on board and the UW told Cedric they would recruit him as a WR, we got back in the picture.

It’s a longshot, but I’m hoping for a couple package deals that swing the UW’s way: Dozier/Banner & Shaq/Armstead

Do you think?

Phil Knight will blame the NCAA investigation and not OU Coaches for any future Oregon sanctions?

by sdhuskyfan on Jan 27, 2012 7:17 AM PST via mobile reply actions

Is that where Montana ended up signing

I heard he signed somewhere but didn’t know where. Too lazy to look it up… yawn!

by datboyeddiep on Jan 27, 2012 9:11 AM PST up reply actions

Per Condotta

Nick Montana will play next year at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif
