I am on vacation this week with sporadic Internet so hang tight...but I am still connected.
Zach Banner is going to announce on Monday and the likely destination is USC. The early announcement is a courtesy to not let the UW coaching staff hang according to inside sources. That being said there is always hope but this one isn't looking good at the moment.
Jake Eldrenkramp will announce his decision sometime this week... nobody including Softy has an idea of which direction he is headed.

everyone assumed because it was Softy’s show that it was UW…so he’s just going to announce on his own now I guess.

The way I’m reading Fetters and Grinolds, they both seem to think Zach stays home. Are we sure the earlier notice is a courtesy to Sark and not Kiffin? Kiffin is the guy that has more to lose and gain by knowing ahead of time, since he’s limited to 15 guys and will want to make sure he gets his full 15, whereas Sark has more flexibility with numbers.
I really don’t know what to think with Zach – I can see arguments for figuring he’s leaning USC and arguments for figuring he’s leaning UW. I will say I will be very disappointed in Sark’s recruiting efforts if Zach chooses USC…
we can, and probably will, drive ourselves nuts trying to figure out why HS 'kids' decide . . .

I don’t know what to make of any new information from any of these recruits, I will hold on to hope that they are coming here. Right now I want Feb 1st to come faster than ever. Speaking of which, I assume we will have an open thread on here with everyone typing what they here on KJR?

The sense I’m getting from enough experts, and from reading his trip report, is that he’s USC-bound. But there’s no reason he wouldn’t give Kiffin the courtesy of a bit of advance notice if he decided on the UW – as I noted, Kiffin has more reason to need to know ASAP given the USC scholarship situation.

I agree with you and hoping but I also believe Banner will announce for UW. I still think the opportunity to play in front of parents for four years will outweigh the one year of glory at USC sitting on the bench followed by three years of watching a slow deterioration as injuries, defections pile on to the reduced schollies. Also remember that few people can afford to walk on to USC.
all the projections of USC as a #1 contender next year are not helping us
Kiffin is selling Zach that not only can he come in right away and play, but that he’ll be playing on legit national championship contending teams.
I’m already trying to get my mind wrapped around the possibility he signs elsewhere, but it’s hard – can’t help but feel like, if that happens, Sark laid a really big egg this year in recruiting.
I don't know about that
Sure, the in-state recruiting didn’t go as we had hoped. But I think by the time it is all said and done, this class will be pretty stocked with potential. We might not have the “instant impact” players we got last year, but you never know until they suit up for fall camp.
I tend to be in the middle
there are some nice guys in this class but so far none of the big names have committed

Good UW recruiting classes have always been built off of top in-state guys, supplemented by some California and Hawai’i prospects. I have a hard time seeing us ever competing toe-to-toe with USC & UCLA for most top California talent, and even Cal has some advantages over us for those kids.
When you have 5 high-level kids in-state and you potentially only sign 1 of them – well, that’s a tough pill to swallow. Especially if you’re not signing top level guys from elsewhere in their place. I’d be less concerned about not getting a Josh Garnett if we were to sign an Arik Armstead, but the chances of that are low.

Mason Kelley – Times: It’s hard to tell with Banner at this point. I think he really likes the Huskies. He seemed to have a good relationship when I watched him interact with Steve Sarkisian. I know he likes basketball coach Lorenzo Romar.
But all of the recruiting analysts seem to think he’s going to end up at USC. It will be interesting to see which school he chooses.
I would lean a little toward USC, probably, but I know he really likes the Huskies, too, and there is a definite pull to stay close to the home base and his F.O.E support system.

If the kid
wants to spend his college years someplace else, there really isn’t anything more left to said. Doesn’t matter how hard Sark recruits him or the others that seek the same thing.
We’ve had outstanding recruiting classes since Sark took over. We got some great recruits commited so far, and we can still finish strong. The fence is still up around the state, it’s just this year, a couple of the big names just wanted to get out of Washington state or have an emphasis on specific academics.
This was also a year that many of the best around the state are waiting for the last week to commit.
If Banner wants to go to USC or any of the other local kids, I just respect it if they don’t turn it into some spectacle and stupidly burn their bridges by bad mouthing UW or the state to other recruits.

Why would the crazy cat lady tweet something if she really has no clue? We all jumped to conclusions that it was probably either Shaq or Shane, leading to more ill-advised talk about a potential commit. Fellas have fun with all the chatter leading up to Wensday. I’ll check in now and then but this year’s recruiting season is all over the map and I’ve lost a lot of interest in it. Does he commit? Will he commit … oops! Maybe I commited too early. Then theirs some that won’t say a bleeping word.

For people who talk about locking down the state of WA
I get that most mean that they want UW to keep the top in-state talent home, but I looked at last year’s recruiting class, and they had nine kids from the state.
This year, they have seven, with a chance to land one more. Granted, they’re not signing Garnett, Russell, or Williams. Still, not that bad, if you ask me.

Word is that Michael Rector will sign with Stanford. He took a visit there this past weekend (didn’t want it publicized), he’s been admitted there and insiders are saying that’s where he’s going. That he’s set an “announcement date” seems to confirm that, since why would he need an announcement date if he’s sticking with his previous commitment to the UW?
Also, the issue is that of the 5 guys in-state rated 4+ stars (and the 5 Seattle Times Blue Chip prospects), only one of them has committed to the UW, and there’s a strong likelihood that we’ll only sign that one guy (Lindquist).
Would be disappointing
As a Bellarmine grad, I was really excited when Gaddy flipped from UA (and then back to UA, then back to UW), and was looking forward to having another Bellarmine athlete at UW.
On the other hand, WR might be the position on the roster I’m least worried about, so if there’s a place to lose commits, thats it.

May not make his decision on signing day. Its reported that its Cal, UW, UCLA equal. not sure if its true but glad to see Oregon isnt in there.

OK – just kidding, but don’t they have like 30 commits already? I don’t think they can sign all the commits they have so some kid is gonna be left standing in the cold on LOI day.
Well not exactly how it works
Some can come in early and that doesnt count and some can come in late which would count for next year.
As the roster stands, they only have something like 17 spots for this class
So it will be interesting to see how the math works out. No truth to the rumor that Mora called Nick Saban to ask how to best get unwanted players off the roster.
This is one area I actually do hope NCAA tightens the rules.
It’s lousy for top draw schools to overrecruit, then sh*tc*n good guys that would have had decent choices elsewhere.

How do you tell when a kid is shoved out the door vs. a kid voluntarily deciding to quit/transfer to another school?

If UW can flip Dozier and close on Banner to end up with both Lakes kids. All of a sudden it goes from 1 Blue Chip to 3 of 5. Would really shut up the doom and gloomers.

We wanted Dozier, but we wanted him as a DB. Now that Kiesau is on the staff, apparently Sark has been convinced to offer him as a WR, which is what Dozier wants to play.
We had no interest in Dozier as a WR before Rector left.
Dozier as a DB and Dozier as a WR are two different players, wanting one is not the same as wanting the other.
If he were to come here I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he took a RS year and then switched to defense if the playing time wasn’t there at WR.
Its easier to coach someone up
as a WR than as a DB. He is physically talented enough that if he really wants to play WR, he likely won’t stay buried in the rotation for long.
That and Rector leaving opens up a spot for WR
Dozier = Rector in my amateur opinion. But the possibility of depth helping nudge Cedric towards our secondary makes me happy.

Pretty crazy recruiting year. Been following the recruiting sites since ‘98, and I’m not sure I can recall a more wild ride for the UW in that time than this year’s class.
With Twitter & Facebook, I expect that crazy recruiting years are going to be the norm moving forward. Kids now have far more power to control the message than they’ve had in the past.

Don’t you want your fanbase to be passionate, bent out of shape, and borderline nuts about the program? I mean take a long look at some of the SEC blogs. I check the Dawgpound daily, if not hourly and I have only steen one guy bad mouth a recruit and to be honest I’m not sure if he is a true Husky fan.

As a fan, there is NOTHING we can do to get more recruits. Bad mouthing them in any forum will only cost us recruits, it will never do us any good.

That out of the way, I have two thoughts about the whole “recruits turned off by message boards” phenomenon:
- Recruits are naive if they think Husky fans are unique in getting pissed-off, disappointed & frustrated when local top recruits head elsewhere; as you note, it’s just a sign that we take football very seriously. Walker Williams ought to know that, if he’d been a Wisconsin native that spurned the Badgers to come to Washington, he’d have heard the same things from Wisconsin fans that he heard from Washington fans.
- That said, why should we make it any harder on our coaches to recruit these guys? Let’s try to act like adults and not spurned exes looking to lash out in a petulant rage; no reason to post nasty things about these guys when they decide not to pick the UW, because it does no good and can only do harm.

Kids are getting bashed on public forums, and the reaction of those kids are becoming stories – there was a piece recently in the Tacoma News-Tribune about it, and I’ve seen other similar stories linked from other parts of the country. It’s becoming a “thing”.
