Previewing the Matchup Versus the Sun Devils
This weekend the Huskies will travel down to Arizona to take on Arizona State and Arizona, respectively. This could very well be the perfect timing for this trip, as the Sun Devils are struggling this year, and Arizona isn't up to the level they were last year when they were led by super-stud Derrick Williams. This trip comes after strong second half showings at home versus the NoCal schools Cal and Stanford. You can find post-game reports here and here. If the Huskies want to take down the post-Williams Wildcats however, they will have to put forth an effort that they did similar to the second half of these games. Sean Miller built a strong program over at Xavier, and will have these Wildcats turned into regular attendees to the Big Dance in no time.
First the Huskies will have to get through the Sun Devils however.
This Arizona St. squad is coached by Herb Sendek, who has a 93-87 (0.517) record in his career with the team. They have been down the past two years however posting a combined record of 18-32 (0.360). His teams went downhill with the loss of James Harden and Jeff Pendergraph, as the team has not posted records near where they were when those two were leading the Sun Devil charge.
This should be an opportunity for the Dawgs to get an easy confidence builder on the road, but with this team one can never be certain what sort of a performance that can be expected from these guys game to game, or even half to half.
The Sun Devils are led in scoring by 6-4 Junior guard Trent Lockett at 13.9 points per game, followed closely behind by 6-4 Sophomore guard Keala King. King, however, has been kicked from the team for disciplinary reasons. This has left a hole at the point guard slot, which King was reluctantly filling. King was suspended along with Kyle Cain and reserve guard Chris Colvin for "unacceptable conduct" and King has subsequently received the boot. Cain and Colvin have since returned however, and when Lockett went down with a sprained ankle, Colvin started in his place. Lockett has yet to return and I do not have any info on the status on neither he nor our own man C.J. Wilcox and his fractured femur. This Sun Devil team is down on offense and the scoring has since been provided by Colvin, along with 6-6 guard Carrick Felix and Freshman forward Jonathon Gilling.
The main man in the middle for Arizona St. has been 7-0 Russian center Ruslan Pateev. He is averaging just under five points per game and 3.6 boards per contest.
This game should be a good confidence builder for the Huskies as they head to face off against a formidable opponent in the Arizona Wildcats.

Thank You!
Really happy to see you doing some previews, thanks very much and great job!
Go Dawgs!
I never realized
How much more difficult it would be to write a preview than a reciew, especially when I know next to nothing about the team we play.

Well
At least you learn a lot about the Pac 12!
Well hopefully it will pay off in the long run
It took longer to write that preview than either of my last two post-game writeups. But thanks for the idea! It never really crossed my mind to do previews.

Good Stuff
I see no reason why our boys shouldn’t pick up the second road win of the year on Thursday. Interesting to see if ASJ continues to get as many minutes.
Might Be Key
If ASJ can provide as much of a spark as he did at home we should cruise on this trip.
Agreed
I was extremely surprised to see him take all of Kemp’s minutes in the first game he played. It’ll be interesting to see if that continues.
We should win this game by a solid margin.
Now is not the time to lay another egg on the road. Our guards should completely overwhelm whoever ASU plays and we should win by a convincing margin.
We need to win this game
This could be a big road trip for us, let’s start it off on the right foot. I hope to see the same kind of “team” game we witnessed in the Stanford game. I don’t want us starting off slow and having to make up for it come the second half again. Let’s go Dawgs!

We need to sweep AZ
We don’t have any room for more losses at this point, especially on a winnable road series like this one.

Great preview!
Definitely learned some new details an average fan like myself wouldn’t have caught on my own. I’ve really been enjoying your writeups on the games, thanks for all the hard work!

Having followed both teams, I can tell you that ASU has no one who can take care of the ball
In the Oregon State game, at one point OSU went into a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap that resulted in two consecutive turnovers where ASU couldn’t even get the ball across halfcourt. Then they inexplicably stopped and ASU ended up winning the game. UW could seriously force 25+ turnovers if the guards bring the good pressure D I’ve been seeing more of recently.
Yes, we have a coupon.
I have a question for you
Who was the starting “point guard,” if you can even call it that, after the suspensions hit. I know that Colvin has been recently but while he was suspended who was running the offense?
They had Lockett bringing the ball up, he was the best player and the only real option.
Still, he was clearly not a PG and his turnover totals were 7, 4, 7, and 2 (Colvin played 13 minutes in this game) before getting injured. At least Colvin is back or the starter would be a 5-9/150 freshman walkon who has a grand total of zero points for the whole year.
Yes, we have a coupon.
