This is from former Oregon OL Geoff Schwartz
There is not a chance Chip is going to the NFL at this point unless Oregon is going to get hit w/ sanctions.

by thecassino on Jan 22, 2012 5:10 PM PST reply actions

if the report is true...

…then yes – I’d say it’s a good sign Oregon knows they’re going to get hit with sanctions.

I like the sound of that....

The story has serious legs...

My sources say the only way he takes the job is if he is certain Oregon is about to be hammered by the NCAA…welcome to Tampa Chip!

Chip is the brains of that system

and a lot of their success is the ability to adjust at half time. If they don’t have Chipper, they’ve lost a huge part of what makes them good. They have huge amounts of talent and speed, but it’s all built around their system. How good will they be without the puppet master? Probably good enough to win a down North next year, but it bodes well for UW’s future.

Rumor mill is churning out:

…Chris Petersen

… Rosemary’s baby.

so much for that.

Chris Petersen would the first guy I think they'd target

Kind of doubt they’d be ready to hand the reigns to Wilcox, but the assistant route worked out with the Chipster…

true, but...

…it’s not all about money for Petersen.

by kirkd on Jan 22, 2012 6:46 PM PST up reply actions

Doesn't seem like it

Seems like all he does is turn teams down, no matter the money, and he finally has BSU in a BCS conference.

Every man has his price. That BSU conference deal is pretty weird.

The Pac-12 is the real deal, and Oregon is ready-made for it.

by Hawnk on Jan 22, 2012 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

possibly

But I think they’d explore a lot of head coach options first. They’ll throw money at Petersen & Patterson first.

Maybe they turn to Bellotti as a short-term solution to groom the next guy (again)?

not if they're under sanctions

Plus, while Oregon currently has more talent, it’s still easier to recruit talent to UCLA. That said, Petersen has past ties to Oregon.

by kirkd on Jan 22, 2012 7:18 PM PST up reply actions

Easier to recruit to UCLA? Now? Doubtful.

Not with Oregon’s facilities and recent success.

Sanctions are the wildcard here. Nobody can say for sure, but I doubt they are going to get hammered. Not after the Buckeyes and Auburn.

Elite school, great weather, good tradition, and smack dab in the best talent pool outside of Texas and Florida. Yeah, recruiting to UCLA is easy – it’s why their recruiting class are usually top 2-3 in the conference.

Ducks lose their brilliant (don’t have to like him, but you gotta admit he’s good) Head Coach, and after a short hard shiver promptly ‘buck up’ ans say they’ll just go get another.

Now way to know how this plays out for the Zeros at this point...

but this does bring up an interesting problem for them in that one of the ways they have overcome their geographic disadvantages in terms of recruits is to go flashy. From helmets, to uniforms, hookers as cheerleaders, and their star wars offense they have done a complete overhaul of how they are viewed by the rest of the country. And made themselves relevant to 17 year olds.

Regardless of who they hire, it has to be a guy that can keep that overall sales pitch for the program going. But does that mean they have to hire a guy that has the same offensive philosophies, roughly, as Chipper?

And now, for my very elaborate and college-educated plan!'

Right now, Oregon is a top program. Nike can probably buy them a nice established HC from another school. It seems unlikely that they hire (no offense to Wilcox) a relatively unproven DC as their new coach.

by B Money on Jan 22, 2012 10:14 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think the timing is going to work out for the Quack job

Chances are Oregon goes with someone else this time around, and unless he flames out badly – and I’d love to see it – he’ll be there longer than 3 years; if Wilcox is any good, he’ll start getting HC offers in 2-3 years, possibly to OSU or Cal depending on how those hot seats evolve.

I doubt things line up for Wilcox to Oregon.

by kirkd on Jan 22, 2012 10:56 PM PST up reply actions

it's hard to see Oregon making a move for Wilcox right now...

I have a very hard time seeing Oregon go after Wilcox for HC. He’s pretty young and still has a lot to prove before being a head coach. There are too many other options for Oregon.

Cause it would be really hard to sell the following

- Being the Conference favorite or Co-favorite every year
-Having a Heisman contending true sophomore
-Being in the NC conversation at least every other year
- Depth from 3 consecutive top 15 recruiting classes
- Best Facilities in the Country
- Nike connection
-One of the best gameday environments in the country
-Complete guarantee of financial support

by ppilot on Jan 23, 2012 9:33 AM PST up reply actions

I actually agree with you on this

I’m not sure it’s quite as attractive as Duck fans would like to believe (see the BB coaching search to see how much facilities and Nike matter), but I think you could poach somebody on the level of a Patterson or Petersen. I don’t think Urban Meyer or Mack Brown is going to jump ship, but you could grab a high profile Coach in a battle with other schools.

by B Money on Jan 23, 2012 9:39 AM PST up reply actions

Outside of the Nike connection

Quite a few schools can make those same claims.

by Carl Shinyama on Jan 23, 2012 9:42 AM PST up reply actions

This actually reinforces my point...let's look at these other schools that would meet the above criteria

Alabama, LSU, USC (for now), Oklahoma, Ohio State (obviously not this year), and Texas,

What other schools would you add?

by ppilot on Jan 23, 2012 9:50 AM PST up reply actions

Georgia

Florida, Michigan, Virginia Tech, Florida State. It’s awfully presumptuous to assume you’ll continue being in the NC at least every other year, when you’re on a run that is hardly unprecedented. Boise State is in the NC conversation as much as Oregon.

by B Money on Jan 23, 2012 9:55 AM PST up reply actions

I would agree with Florida except they aren't going to compete with Alabama or LSU until they get QB and a decent offense

- Michigan didn’t belong in the BCS this year and is nowhere close to the NC discussion. Also it will be interesting to see what happens once Robinson leaves
- Virginia tech had an even weaker resume and got boat-raced by the only decent team they played (Clemson) and hasn’t been in the NC discussion for years.
- I actually agree about FSU on that list due to being in a recruiting hotbed and having the chance to win their crappy conference every year. With the amount of talent that team has, it should be much better.

As for BSU, an undefeated Bronco team will never get into the BCS NC over a one loss Big-12, SEC, Big-10, or Pac-12 school. Also they would not meet a couple of the other criteria I listed.

by CODawg on Jan 23, 2012 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

Probably not (especially with the "significantly" caveat).

But continuing at the same level of success is by no means a given, either.

There is literally no reason that Texas or Florida should’ve fallen as far and as fast as they did. Especially the Longhorns. But they did.

by Sundodger on Jan 23, 2012 11:40 AM PST up reply actions

I see them going down yes

Especially since I believe they will have sanctions. I also believe it will harder for them to rebound as quickly as USC was able too. Im not saying a total fall but, out of top 10 yes.

by CODawg on Jan 23, 2012 12:26 PM PST up reply actions

You left out

The at a minimum uncertainty of pending sanctions. I do agree though that it would have a lot of interest. Just not to level you seem to believe.

by CODawg on Jan 23, 2012 10:33 AM PST up reply actions

I'm not sure everyone would agree that Oregon has the best facilities in the country.

Everything outside of Autzen is fantastic. There’s no doubt. But a sub-60,000 seat stadium, no matter how nice, has a perception of being something less than big time. I’m not knocking it. I’ve been there several times. But it just on the small side.

Some of the other things you mention are totally fluid. They’re there now, but aren’t really a “part” of Oregon’s program (nor any program for that matter). But the biggest thing working against Oregon in trying to land a new coach is the lack of an established recruiting base. Kelly has made it work, in large part because what he does is fairly unique. A coach that runs a more traditional offense might have a tougher time establishing a foothold with recruits outside the west coast.

by Sundodger on Jan 23, 2012 11:37 AM PST up reply actions

Texas and Ohio State are laughing at the notion that Oregon has the best facilities

As are most of the big-time SEC programs.

Oregon probably has the nicest facilities in the Pac-12, but that edge will be narrowed significantly over the next couple of years as USC, Cal & UW finish up their latest projects.

by kirkd on Jan 23, 2012 11:49 AM PST up reply actions

Compare in what way?

Husky stadium is going to look fantastic after the renovation, but will have absolutely no effect on Autzen’s reputation of being one the best stadiums in the country.

by ppilot on Jan 23, 2012 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

except that we'll have a bigger, nicer and louder stadium

We’ve always had the bigger stadium, and we are louder (when the team is good and the stands are full), and now with the rebuild it will clearly be nicer. It’s always had arguably the best setting in all of college football, but it was starting to show its age in the last decade+. That’s now being addressed in a big way.

by kirkd on Jan 23, 2012 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

It needs to be bigger

Until then I dont think you can overcome sanctions the way the USC can.

Honestly

The Oregon program is bigger than Chip Kelly…the only thing for a Duck fan to worry about is the NCAA.

Slick Rick to Oregon!!!

although not on the “exuberant wish list” being put out there, sources within the Oregon athletic department have indicated that contact has been made with the former UCLA coach.

Can't see Peterson taking the job

I’m sure the Ducks early wish list will be true fantasyland. If Peterson turned down a kings ransom at UCLA, why would he take the Ducks? Who in their right mind will take that job with the NCAA investigation still on-going.

My god. Slick Rick at Oregon. How freaking awesome would that be.

Chip is staying

Per Adam Jude at the R-G: BREAKING: Chip Kelly changes his mind, tells a highly placed UO source: “I’m staying.”

As you were.

Go Ducks!

As far as pitching recruits

Turning down an interview looks better than 11th hour backouts. STL has a higher payroll, better foundation and better draft position. Do you know that Chip didn’t formally agree? Reports were that he accepted. Besides, if that’s really one of your arguments (the semantics of “a donovan”), you kind of lost, no?

by B Money on Jan 23, 2012 2:02 AM PST up reply actions

The reports never said that a deal was done...that seems to be the part you are missing

Also how many wins did St. Louis get with that better foundation and higher payroll?

by ppilot on Jan 23, 2012 2:03 AM PST up reply actions

RG twitter feed said

And I quote “It’s done” with a link to the story. And I believe they got one less, with an injured franchise QB, no WR’s and a braindead OC.

by B Money on Jan 23, 2012 2:12 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah

And if it’s true, he had a change of heart after agreeing to the deal. The fact that they didn’t get to the dog and pony show part doesn’t really matter, to me at least. In fact this whole argument is kind of dumb. I said he “pulled a Donovan”. It was a joke, mostly because Donovan was the most high profile “Donovan” that came to mind. If the semantics really matter to you that much, you can have this one.

by B Money on Jan 23, 2012 9:26 AM PST up reply actions

And for the record

I think TB is a quality job and I had legitimate faith (still do as I think he takes another job by this time next year), that he would have succeed at that job. I think STL is in better position to make a run in the next 2-3 years, mostly because of Bradford. They need some CB help and another WR, but beyond that, they’re set up very well. TB is notoriously cheap and they’ve got some glaring holes, but only the draft to fill them.

If you're expecting tears of sarrow, you'll be dissappointed

Do I wish he was gone, yeah. He’s a good coach and I love chaos at Oregon. But by my count, all that happened is Castro decomitted and Chip canceled a visit with the #1 DB in america. He’s now got to explain why he changed his mind at midnight and try to spin it to recruits. Like I said, we’re in the same place as yesterday, but now you guys have far less reason to believe its not going to happen eventually.

by B Money on Jan 23, 2012 1:19 AM PST up reply actions

Sark turned down an interview for a much better job

Chip took it to the limit and according to reports, took the job before doing “A Donovan”. You’re right, that sounds great to a guy committing 4 years of his life to a school.

by B Money on Jan 23, 2012 1:33 AM PST up reply actions

Look, the truth is that this whole thing does not reflect well on Chip Kelly at all, you're right. The thing that makes Oregon fans excited right now is just that it's such a massive relief to hear.

Seriously, it’s like waking up after a nightmare. Sure you’re the same as you ever were, just like when you got into bed the night before, but aren’t you relieved it all wasn’t real?

Things like that.

by qrsouther on Jan 23, 2012 1:35 AM PST up reply actions

I can imagine

But the prevailing thought that “I bet UDP is sooo pissed lolol!!!!11” is stupid. And since I don’t want to say it on ATQ, Matt Daddy is an insufferable sub-sophomoric prick who wouldn’t know class if it rec’d him right in the Wheaton Wave. He really thinks highly of himself.

by B Money on Jan 23, 2012 1:42 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly.

We are right back where we started, but Chip Kelly did add some instability to the Oregon program AND it looks like he lost a recruit or two in the process. Well done Chip!

more like Oregon probably isn't in the Shaq sweepstakes

There had been talk that Oregon was coming on as a darkhorse 3rd contender, but it’s probably down to Cal vs. UW.

So there is a bunch of things here first - Interviewing and actually being offered the position are completely

Second – How is St. Louis a better situation than Tampa Bay?
Third – Billy Donovan actually formally accepted the Orlando job whereas the Kelly situation was battle of anonymous sources.

Stay or Go

This just opens the floodgates for those negative recruiters. No way can a PSA truly believe CK will stay for the 4/5 years that they are committing to the school.

by Bamer_ on Jan 23, 2012 2:28 AM PST reply actions

Agree

While you might not see the top tier recruits re-opening on this news a few may very well do so. Players the Ducks already felt were total commits. And it does raise the question about how long Chip will stick around.

by Regent Denali on Jan 23, 2012 2:53 AM PST up reply actions

So, Chip isn’t leaving Oregon
Kelly is intrigued by the challenge of coaching at the highest level and not having to deal with parents and the NCAA oversights that are inherent to coaching in college, the source told Schad. — ESPN

Chip needs to do some immediate damage control.

by Keski on Jan 23, 2012 4:47 AM PST reply actions

exactly

While I’m disappointed – the chaos of seeing what will happen to Oregon when Kelly leaves is going to be highly entertaining – let’s not pretend that things are the same as they were 24 hours ago in Eugene.

We now all know that Kelly aspires to coach in the NFL; we know he damn-near took a job last night; we know that there are many aspects of coaching at the college level that he doesn’t like; we know he canceled some in-home visits last night.

Whether Duck fans want to admit it or not, there will be repercussions from this – there’s a lot of material there for opposing coaches to exploit in recruiting against the Ducks.

by kirkd on Jan 23, 2012 11:45 AM PST up reply actions

Well we certainly hope so. Have to note Duck fans responded with much greater

confidence & composure over rumors about their HC than did Cal fans about their position coaches.

by HuskyInExile on Jan 23, 2012 10:31 PM PST up reply actions

Not surpised

He’s never seemed to enjoy the television interviews and fielding reporters’ questions… Not that those would decrease in the NFL, but if he doesn’t like that aspect, I doubt he likes shmoozing with boosters and parents.
