Paterno, a sainted figure at Penn State for almost half a century but scarred forever by the child sex abuse scandal that brought his career to a stunning end, died Sunday at age 85.

Everything about this story (and all its offshoots) is just sad.
RIP
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
indeed
My in-laws are huge, huge Penn State fans (and alums). This whole thing has not been easy for me to watch. As a neutral observer, it’s easy for me to say JoePa should’ve retired long ago, that he should have done more with the info that he was given, that the school and community of State College shouldn’t have deified JoePa and Penn State football to the extent they did. But watching the reaction to all of this from their perspective – it’s been tough. They were (and certainly are again now at his passing) devastated.
Though I feel
for his family; sadly, after spending nearly 45 years of my life as a JoPa supporter, the last words I’ll remember him saying are – “I didn’t exactly know how to handle it”. I hope that thought fades with time.
I don't, the events that recently came to light completely overshadow everything else he did in his life.
And they will be what I remember him as, an enabler of child abuse.
He was an Ivy League graduate...
He knew how to handle it…he passed it down the line so it could be covered up and it bit him in the ass in the end.

"I didn’t exactly know how to handle it."
We expect those put in position to know how to handle things to always know how to handle things, especially those who usually did know how.
Perhaps the most important think to take from all this is the reminder that it isn’t always that easy to know exactly how to handle everything.

It's clear you don't have much sympathy for JoePa, and neither do I
The very fact that age is being suggested as a ‘defense’ is more proof that very long tenure is bad for transparency.

Depends
No sympathy on how he handled the scandal…despite that he did a lot of good things over the years.

JoePA
I was actually with 5 PSU grads on saturday night when the news was breaking. At this point they are all just over the story and they all believe that JOePa screwed up and his legacy will be tarnished. They also all believed as I did, that as soon as Joe was no longer the coach, his retirement life would be short.
