Any idea...

…where he’s leaning towards going? Have the Husky coaches softened on him?

interesting

Wooching is from the windward side of Oahu, Brostek is from the big island. I suppose they know each other from camps and whatnot…

Both go to HS on the Big Island

Wooching’s HS is in Kona on the west side of the Big Island (home of Longboard Lager and Kona Brewing Co!).

Brostek’s HS is in Waimea in the northern part of the Big Island – only about a 45 to an hour drive away from Kona.

That’s certainly not anything we’ve heard here – all the indications have been he’s a Husky lock. Maybe the Max Unger connection?

Looking at his tape it looks like he would be a better fit at LB. the first video of him at LB is him putting a hurt on the ball carrier

I think he's better at LB...

…but the only way Sark was going to get him was by selling him on coming in as a RB.

Let’s hope the depth at RB in Spring convinces him to try LB, but given the numbers at RB right now he’ll have a shot there for playing time.

It's really pretty close to what you'd expect

Wilcox is getting a small raise as expected
Keisau is getting almost exactly Nussmeier’s money
Lupoi is getting less at 350k a year, but with a 100k bonus now and another 100k in 3 years, it comes to about 415k a year average. Less than the 500k reported, but still a huge bump from what Cal was giving him.

by thecassino on Jan 21, 2012 12:52 PM PST up reply actions

Cal should have been able to counter

Cal simply chose not to pay the money to retain either of the coaches.

UW Dawg Pound - SBN Seattle

by John Berkowitz on Jan 21, 2012 1:21 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

More to the story

To accept #365,000 and bolt for UW, there had to be more reasons then just money to get Tosh out of his alma mater. I don’t buy that a bump in pay is the reason. This proves that Cal was not willing to pay $300,000 for him and that he must not have been liked in the Cal coaching staff. Maybe others were jealous. I think what all these coaching hires prove is that people want to work for Sark. The salaries back it up too. We did not have to over pay to get top notch coaches to come to UW. Just think if you take out the former coaches buy out we are only increasing the coaching salaries by $700,000 a year and we got much better coaches in all areas. (in my opinion)

by DAWGFAN87 on Jan 21, 2012 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

yep

There’s a lot more. From listening to McGill, there was tension on the Cal staff – other coaches were getting peeved at the attention Tosh was getting, and Tosh felt under-appreciated and that he’d been tossed under the bus with the “fake injury” thing vs. Oregon.

Toss in the pitch that Sark made about no coach under Tedford moving on to become a head coach vs. what has happened under the Pete Carroll tree (clever bit of propaganda there since Sark hasn’t had an assistant go on to be a head coach yet either) as well as the Wilcox factor and I think you can see the appeal for Tosh. And I think when he saw what the UW was able to offer, and the limits to how far Cal would go, he could see the balance of power in the conference shifting.

On a side note, I’ve seen it referenced elsewhere (on CGB actually) that the disparity between head coach pay and assistant coach salary pool is extreme at Cal – they rank #2 behind Minnesota in that regard. Tedford makes big bucks, but his assistants do not, especially in comparison to Tedford.

by kirkd on Jan 21, 2012 2:04 PM PST up reply actions

Cal's problem

is not being a self sufficient Athletic department and it forces them to answer to Upper Campus. They believe (which is fine but dont complain when your assistant coaches get poached) that assistant coaches should not get paid more then Cal faculty. Tedford salary is offset by boosters. UW because we are self sufficient do not have to answer to Upper Campus. Thus we can pay our coaches whatever we want and are able to. That is the big difference and why Cal will never be a player in the PAC12.

by DAWGFAN87 on Jan 21, 2012 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

Relationships with upper campus.

I think you’ve got a strong point here, it would appear that our new president Michael Young is pro sports and pro football, which only makes it easier for Woodward and Sark to get more money for the program.

I get the feeling that Cal is in a similar place to Washington in the 90’s. Upper campus isn’t pro sports (even if they talk the talk), anybody that compares faculty pay to football coaches pay is making an absurd comparison. When was the last time that 50,000+ people showed up (and paid $50 per ticket) to watch a professor do their job?

by Lear Pilot on Jan 21, 2012 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

Excellent point. Cal Athletic Dept probably could have found the $$$

for Tosh, and I have to assume they could have offered the run defense asst title,
but that would’ve also required a reset to other coaches salaries and left the coaches making more than professors.
I don’t think Cal administration was ready to take on the whole asst coach bidding war on short notice over the holidays, and they just didn’t see it coming.

by HuskyInExile on Jan 21, 2012 7:27 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't call Sarks "clever bit" propaganda...

I agree it was a clever angle to the storyline/pitch…but propaganda? Consider that Tedfords coaching reign at Cal alone has been what…10+years or so? Sarks Head Coaching career still has the new car smell…and with Nuss “moving on up” (by moving down south..) a successful performance for him will soon bring Head Job offers! Success breeds Success…the rich get richer so to speak..No disrespect intended but, Tedfords recruited talent vs performance outcomes haven’t really impressed. Dawgs on the other hand are on the verge of a breakout action I think and Sark knew it would require a bold series of moves! I say; “Well done Sark”! by targeting and getting the talented guys to help get r done! Now we’ll all just have to wait and see who left “undecided” can see the opportunity here with the Dawgs and pen their future on the uptrending train!? Dawgs Baby!

by gliderdawg on Jan 22, 2012 11:48 AM PST up reply actions

my point is this

Yes, Sark has only been a head coach for three years, so there hasn’t been much time for his staff to move on up. And yes, in the time period that Tedford has been a head coach, it’s surprising that he hasn’t had any staffers move on to a HC position – compare that with a similar time span under Carroll and how many of his guys have done so.

That said, you could also argue that if Sark is going to point to the Pete Carroll coaching tree, Tedford could point to the Mike Bellotti coaching tree, or the Jim Sweeney coaching tree.

You have to admit that it was a bit of spin on the part of Sark.

by kirkd on Jan 22, 2012 1:10 PM PST up reply actions

it's a little bit more complicated than that

Cal and Tedford were reportedly willing to go up to $300K for Tosh, even though that would cause some grousing within his staff. But it was going to have to go through a lot of bureaucracy to get approved, and the tensions Tosh was feeling among the rest of the staff was only going to increase.

by kirkd on Jan 21, 2012 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly

There had to be other reasons for him leaving Cal. I am torn on the Shaq Thompson situation. Telling him that you were thinking of going to UW I don’t think is wrong as being up front with recruits is the best way to go IMO. How many times do coaches lie to recruits.. Telling recruits “Hey I am leaving for UW take a look if you are interested” is much different then “Hey I am leaving for UW, don’t go to Cal” We have only heard one side of the story (Cal’s perspective) it will be interesting to hear what Tosh has to say about this.

by DAWGFAN87 on Jan 21, 2012 2:06 PM PST up reply actions

Scorned lovers . . .

I want to see some PROOF that Tosh said, “Don’t go to Cal”. It’s like going to somebodies recently ex-wife and asking what they think happened.

Would it be out of line for Tosh to say, “I’ve recently realized that Cal won’t spend the money necessary to be competitive in football, I’d reconsider going there if I were you”. I don’t think it’s out of line, I think Cal fans are hurt and I don’t blame them. It sucks when a former player, who then becomes an assistant coach, moves on to another school in the conference. I really feel for Cal fans, but if Tosh wants to move up the coaching ladder, he can’t stay at Cal forever.

"Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."
"Legends are made on the shores of Lake Washington"

by Lear Pilot on Jan 21, 2012 2:28 PM PST up reply actions

My guess...

..is that it wasn’t so much about the money as it was the oportunity to move up. At Cal Tosh could have been stuck at DL coach for another decade. At UW it is assumed that WIlcox will take a head coaching job in the next three or four years which would give Tosh a chance to move to D cordinator = big raise and a big move up the ladder. If your goal in coaching is the big bucks then you have to find the quickest route up the ladder and I think, at this point, UW offers that.

by Snostrebla on Jan 21, 2012 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

I had that thought too.

If Wilcox is successful and moves on to be a head coach, he’ll probably take Sirmon with him. It would be Tosh’s job to lose.

by Lear Pilot on Jan 21, 2012 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

Me too. Sark is advertising a pipeline, even though he's not all the way there, yet.

But D.Martin did get hired away, and Nansenn did get the big promotion to Alabama. If you’re an asst/position coach or a coordinator, you have two ways to move up:
- promotion w/in (usually only available near term if program has great success and someone ahead of you is hired away for a promotion)
- or being hired away by another team.

by HuskyInExile on Jan 21, 2012 7:31 PM PST up reply actions

Wilcox and Tosh are tight

If Wilcox gets a head coaching job in the near future, I’m sure Wilcox offers Tosh a job at his new school. Tosh would then have to decide between the two schools.

All I saw was purple

by crazidawg on Jan 21, 2012 8:00 PM PST up reply actions

When Wilcox goes he will most likely take Sermon with him to be his D cordinator leaving us without a D-cordinator. So he can go continue to be a DL coach with Wilcox or possibly be the DC here.
