It was reported by Scout and other services that CB Brandon Beaver from Domnguez HS in Compton, Ca committed to Washington last night during an in home visit with head coach Steve Sarkisian and recruiting coordinator Johnny Nansen.

Update: As of this morning Beaver says that he hasn't committed to anyone, he will trip Oklahoma this coming weekend, and he will make his announcement on signing day.

interesting

Your sources are usually correct but he just tweeted that’s is a lie. I wasn’t expecting this either

It's because useless Ruth "broke" they story

I’m not sure if DM was going to hold it back or not, but Ruth jumped the gun and tweeted rumors. Beaver wanted to announce on signing day since he’s going to do it on TV. Manbearpig (assist to Steen) strikes again!

Wouldn't be January...

If she wasn’t trying desperately to make herself part of the story.

It would be nice to know who Ruth's source is

she must have a friend in the athletic department. It’s too bad because she usually has decent information but not the whole story and ends up pissing guys off that UW is close to landing. Tis is just another instance of the same crap she does year after year.

by Snostrebla on Jan 18, 2012 8:01 AM PST up reply actions   2 recs

I doubt it's in the AD

She more than likely gets her info from recruits, their families and their coaches.

by kirkd on Jan 18, 2012 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

This would be even worse in my opinion as Ruth is borderline crazy in a lot of ways.

I honestly didn’t know that she was this disliked by husky fans, but it makes sense. Having a weird pseudo-journalist going around interviewing recruits would bother mr.

by ppilot on Jan 18, 2012 2:25 PM PST up reply actions

As we've recently seen

There’s nothing “pseudo-journalistic” about her

by TualatinDawg on Jan 18, 2012 2:29 PM PST up reply actions

well...

…as is evident from her tweets and comments on Facebook and public comment boards, she’s damn near schizophrenic. She’ll come on all sweet and friendly at first to try to get close to kids and their families – try to become really buddy-buddy with them to the extent she even tries to sound current & hip (despite being well into middle-age) – but if she feels someone disrespects her or (even worse in her mind) doesn’t give her “exclusives”, she flips out.

The problem is many kids don’t realize she’s nuts until she flips out on them.

I have no idea if Sark & his staff warn prospective recruits about her, but I would if I was him. I’ve heard it from good sources that she is not liked by the UW staff and that they are upset about what happened last night. Not sure what they’ll do in response – I have no idea if they grant her press access or not – but they need to address it, because she’s a real problem.

by kirkd on Jan 18, 2012 5:35 PM PST up reply actions

I'm sure she gets press access.

Ian Furnace has said on several occasions that she asks the most ridiculous questions on the PAC12 conference calls. This all still begs the information of how she found out abot Beaver. Was it a guess? or did she just put 2 and 2 together based on his obvious twiter post?

by Snostrebla on Jan 18, 2012 8:43 PM PST up reply actions

could be she guessed

I’d put good money that the Scout.com guys actually talked to some people though, so somebody close to Beaver was spilling the beans.

by kirkd on Jan 18, 2012 9:23 PM PST up reply actions

They might have talked to Beaver himself

or one of the coaches who got the news. My guess is that Ruth saw the “WOOF’s” and just called around until she found something. Dawgman didn’t report it until after the twitter war, which leads me to believe they knew to keep it under wraps (though that is speculation), seeing as they’re way further inside the program than manbearpig.

by B Money on Jan 19, 2012 10:27 AM PST up reply actions

She said on twitter she had a source at Dominguez

then later when somebody said she was reporting the commit said she hadn’t talked to him and she wanted to confirm.

by B Money on Jan 19, 2012 10:24 AM PST up reply actions

I think she guessed

then got a lousy source that she admit wasnt a great source to confirm. My guess it was a friend of his.

Yes they do...

Ruth is scum.

Where is that idiot who was defending Ruth and RD? If she really does have a source inside the AD, Woodward would do well to eliminate it.

I believe she was called into the “office” by Woodward a couple years ago after she pestered a recrut into oblivion. Somehow she gets info before others so she has t have an inside source. Your right, that source should be eliminated.

Beaver had an in home visit with Nansen, not with Coach Sark. My sources confirm that Sark was not in the state of California. I doubt that changes anything, but accurate info can’t hurt.

Is there a difference between one “Woof” and three “Woofs”? I need to catch up on my facebook/twitter lingo.

That's unfortunate

I wouldn’t think it’d be too hard to code into the site, but what do I know?

by TualatinDawg on Jan 18, 2012 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

It's both easy and hard

They probably don’t have a css style for recs specifically as part of the webpages for the sites. Which means that for every single site they’d have to add it and make sure it works, as well as storing (somewhere) that color.

It’s not hard in the sense that it would take a long time to do. It’s hard in the sense of rolling it out everywhere. You also have the issue of people accidentally screwing over their site by picking a color that you can’t read the text on and having tech support issues in that way.

If I could kiss Nick Holt, I would. Though, with him, I’m sure it would end in deep penetration and a score

This is actually really good feedback . . . .

I kinda think part of the issue will involve whether SBNation was originally coded to allow flexible control over access to individual sites.

- if so, then it may only require a user interface soft toggle at mothership to allow John greater control
- if not, then the issue arises over how doing anything for any one blog might affect the others in the community.

For the smart programming guys out there it oughta seem like logical set up and access protocols would be ‘built in,’ but we have no way of knowing whether ‘founders’ saw ahead to growth & popularity of their progeny.

I admit to being a little new and niave at this. The contrast and variation in blog rules, styles and vibes within SBNation really kinda shocks me.

FYI, it would be helpful for every site to include not just the standard “these are our rules” to click on to join a blog, but a standard link location that explains the convention(s) at each site.

sort of harmless, sort of not

One of the best features of the SBNation blogs is the ability to follow threads by having the new posts show up as yellow – using the rec button to turn everything green is mostly harmless except for the fact it removes that feature of being able to easily follow threads and new replies.

And yeah, that a mod would stoop to encouraging and participating in this behavior speaks volumes about the Oregon fans. They can (finally) win a Rose Bowl, but it doesn’t change them from acting like 11 year olds.

I'm sure John appreciated burning two hours of his day cleaning up the mess

…and then was subjected to accusations of being immature by your compatriots. wonderful. Just TP his house next time.

The ATQ has really devolved in the last year as the snakiness and sarcasm of the younger members has come to dominate the voice of the blog. You guys don’t discuss anything anymore – it’s all riffing, ripping, giffing and inside jokes in between senseless berating of dawg fans at random times. Classy.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

Even I don't get some of the inside memes

However it’s good to mix up discussion with harmless banter. I used to frequent the Congrove blog and non-relevant banter wasn’t allowed. It was boring.

My Take

I can see the humor in changing every post to green by giving it repeated rec’s. I guess it is somewhat akin to taking a case of toilet paper, and hanging it from every limb of the tree’s in the front yard of somebody you either don’t like, don’t respect, or are trying to get even with.

The fun part for the protagonist is knowing that there is going to be some decent shock value followed by a couple hours of clean up. Why not just come to my house…rung the door bell, and run away.

I sent Jared Light of ATQ a friendly email asking for help after I had figured out (with the help of everyone) what had happened.

John : Hi Jared – We had a large spamming attack on our site today that was instigated by one of your moderators…Matt Daddy. Would you please give me a call before this really gets out of hand?

Jared: John – I’m unavailable over the phone this afternoon. While I’m aware of what happened on your site, I would hardly call it spamming. As far as being instigated by Matt Daddy, it wasn’t. Many of our members have been talking about this for quite a while. For now, I’ve asked my users to not troll your site anymore.

Hmmm….he is aware of what happened on our site but does not have the time to clear it up over the phone…but denies the complicity of Matt…what a bunch of cowards.

the downside of deleting giant spam posts like the multiple Wheaton waves they had going

is that it’s less obvious how obnoxious ATQ posters were being. I can imagine Jared/anyone else taking a look at the greening and thought “well, that’s not so bad”, not knowing/bothering about the crap that had to get filtered out.

the Wheaton Wave pretty much by definition is a spamming attack. Kenny Wheaton is the discount Cialis of the Pac 12.

by Will Kier on Jan 18, 2012 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

The green out has occurred two other times and in both situations the blogs thought it was pretty damn funny

The wheaton wave went over the line in my opinion as it made site navigation difficult and there is no bypass the extra posts. At least with the rec’d items you can still use the z key to find new posts.

by ppilot on Jan 18, 2012 9:16 PM PST up reply actions

to be fair, it probably happened during the run up to the Auburn and Wisconsin games

so Ducks fans appearing would be a little less cryptic and arbitrary than……let’s say, day 3000, in the middle of January. always be on your toes, I guess.

by Will Kier on Jan 18, 2012 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

Again, I don't think we necessarily found fault with the greening

A prank’s a prank, and it’s not like we don’t have a sense of humor over here. But the wave? Come on man, that’s just an open mocking of another fan base. Would the Red Sox blog think it’d be cute if 100 Met’s fans came over and “waved” about the ball going through Buckner’s legs? That’s obviously not in good taste, and they can’t in seriousness think that it would go over well.

by TualatinDawg on Jan 18, 2012 9:40 PM PST up reply actions

the greening

I’d have had less of a problem with it had it been common knowledge to use the Z key to find new posts – my problem with the greening was losing that ability to quickly see which posts were knew, which made reading these long threads a huge pain in the ass.

So about the Beav, i’m now more scared he could be going somwhere else due to the story leak of Ruth on twitter. Possible he could still stay, either way I think if you want to keep something hush then you probably shouldn’t be on twitter or if it was him that committed he should have told Nansen to keep it hush along with whoever told DM and Ruth. Let the kid have his day, it could be the only one of his life that is this special for him. My 2 cents

well
The bottom line is that, as much as I took some pretty horrible insults and slanderous remarks after I reported, along with Dawgman.com, that Brandon Beaver had committed to Washington, the person who was hurt the most was Brandon Beaver. Not because it “stole his thunder” on his signing day announcement, but because he has allowed himself to become the object of a terrible, terrible disease that is spreading in our society, where people can go on the net under the cloak of anonymity and behave like a mob of out-of-control wild pigs. The minute the news of his commitment went viral and Brandon wouldn’t confirm it, fans piled on his twitter account and began to furiously message him. Ultimately, it is the fans who are to blame for this frenzy because they can’t get enough from all the news sites that cover recruiting, they think they have to involve themselves too and then go about acting like children in a roller rink if they want a recruit at their school.

a very passive accounting of what happened. Yes, how, exactly did it go viral, hmmm? Does whomever sent it viral bear any responsibility for encouraging events they know would happen? In this society we live in. This country these days, you know.

by Will Kier on Jan 18, 2012 6:15 PM PST up reply actions

with all due respect to Beaver...

…he does bear some responsibility for this. After all, how did Ruth find out? How did the Scout.com guys find out? Beaver must have told someone, and that someone either wasn’t to be trusted to keep their mouth shut or he didn’t make it clear to them to keep it a secret.

That said, Ruth is insane. Even Beaver was criticizing her on his Twitter account. Does she get persecuted? Yep, but it’s because she absolutely, 100% deserves it.

by kirkd on Jan 18, 2012 7:50 PM PST up reply actions

I completely agree.

But if Ruth knew that Beaver wanted it kept quite until his signing day, that’s on her.

by Carl Shinyama on Jan 18, 2012 7:53 PM PST up reply actions

agree 100%

What’s amazing is she still clings to this idea that the “scoop” is super important. Anyone with a shred of intelligence would realize that is no longer true. With people posting info as it happens on Twitter, that info immediately gets re-Tweeted and reported as news within minutes of it happening. I honestly don’t get her business model – if she’s publicly Tweeting commit news, what’s the point of subscribing to her site?

And yet her zeal to “scoop” everyone is at the heart of all that is wrong with her – she berates recruits that don’t give her “exclusives”, she ignores requests to keep news hush-hush, she flips out and accuses other sites of “ripping her off” because they also talk to recruits and get basically the same story that she got (duh – does she really expect recruits will say something different to Eklund, Gorney or Fetters than they tell her?)

Not to take ANY responsibility

away from D.M and R.D but, when Sark is tweeting “woof” from the kids livingroom, EVERYONE in Huskyville knows it’s Sark delivering news about a recruit commit. Agree that D.M and R.D were the bomb, but that fuse got lit before the bomb went off.

There are those who contend that Sark might have been woofing about something else. I say this has never been the case before – he woofs about commits. And I ask – who else then – other than Beaver – has committed?

I think when a kid says – don’t announce my commitment, then Sark should not tweet “woof” from the kids house.

by onewoodwacker on Jan 19, 2012 3:54 AM PST up reply actions

Other coaches were other places

They could have called him from another kids house and said we got player x to commit.

by CODawg on Jan 19, 2012 7:43 AM PST up reply actions

Sark "Woofs" about commits, yes

But it could have been any commit – nobody had to find out that it was Beaver if Beaver hadn’t told people around him, and those people then spilled the beans to the recruiting sites.

There have been a number of times Sark has “Woofed” and the recruiting sites haven’t had a corresponding follow-up report of who it was that just committed.

Further, Sark was NOT at Beaver’s house that night according to the more recent reports, and I’ve heard from others that confirm that.

I don't expect Beaver to be a Dawg

I gained some respect for Chris Fetters today. He made the cardinal sin and sat down and wrote was truly on his mind and he was on point!

Beaver played both Realdawg and Dawgman and got everyone on these boards pointing fingers at the wrong person. Sark woofed which means the question is going to be who committed and both sites rant stories only to have Beaver throw cold water.

At this point i’m not really all interested in Drama Queens. I’d be more than happy with Randall Goforth and Devian Shelton.

by murchy on Jan 18, 2012 9:44 PM PST reply actions

I wouldn't label him a drama queen.

We don’t know the full story or what his intentions are/were and we really don’t know for sure if he gave a verbal commitment or not. Can you imagine what it’s like for a high school athlete having every person you go to school with constantly pestering you for answers about where you’re gonna play college ball and when/who you’re committing to? Most of us probably get upset after being asked the same questions 3 or 4 times, recruits have to be asked the same thing dozens if not hundreds of times.

by JoeinFW on Jan 18, 2012 11:15 PM PST up reply actions

drama queen?

Or a kid having fun with what is (in a lot of ways) a kind of sick obsession by adults over decisions made by teenagers? The whole thing really is rather ridiculous when you step back and look at it. I have a hard time characterizing a kid like Beaver as being a “drama queen” – I’d rather save that term for someone who truly deserves it.

You dont know the whole story

You are making assumptions about how he acted. You dont know who RD’s sources on this were. She says its not Beaver. Everyone else says it doesnt come from UW. So who? Based what i have heard would it be out of the realm that she paid one of his friends to tell her when he commited? At this point I have seen nothing from Beaver that would not make me proud of him.

No

but if he was my son, I’d expect it. I’ve got a cousin who’s 14, and even the difference from when I was 14 (I’m 27 now) on a maturity level is alarming. Exactly.

Imagine the excitement that would have ensued if Jake Heaps would have committed to UW. The problem is nobody knows how an given athlete is going to work out. It’s possible he would have been Price’s backup, then transferred away like Montana did. That’s why I can’t get too excited (and won’t spend money on Dawgman), there is way too much guessing and assuming going on. I love the fact that any unrated recruit can come in an be the best player on the team!
