I guess I'll be.... FIRST!

To say how surreal this week has been for us Dawgpounders! Nuss gone! Tosh in! "Big wheels keep on turnin’…Sorry. just so much happening with our Dawgs and it’s just taking off with signing day in 2 weeks! Now Nick Montana’s leaving too? I thought he would fight on after reports had him in classes and honestly I’m really glad and hopeful for him in his development! Go make us proud Nick! Classy young man!

With Keith Prices' game taking off to Heisman altitudes...

And backup duties being claimed for several years? He is making a wise choice to finding PT somewhere else like the JC in that story that leaked last week? Cyler Miles and Jeff Lindquist being added to the inventory of talent just took this team to another place of possibilities!

Good for him

This is the definition of a win win situation. He gets to find a place where he can play, UW gets the extra scholarship. Realistically it would not surprise me if Brown was going to be the back up QB by next year. Basically we are trading a RSO in Montana for a true Freshman in Miles. I will take that any day.

Good luck to him..

Hate to see him go

But I’m not really surprised, given our QB situation. Good luck to him wherever he ends up.

Do think this is how Sark always refers to Nick?

I think it helped him get recruited.

I'm so positive, you'll need AZT later.

Cmon Steen, he was 4 stars

I know how you love those stars

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

by Gekko Mojo on Jan 16, 2012 9:46 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

One site had him at 3

Scout and ESPN had him at 4 stars. Although Rivals had him at #22 and Scout at #19.

by B Money on Jan 17, 2012 8:52 AM PST up reply actions

I've never said the ratings are absolute in their accuracy.

The system obviously has some flaws in how the ratings are assigned. A class full of 5 stars is still better year to year than a class full of 3 stars.

Maybe Montana gets a real opportunity and is successful somewhere, by I highly doubt it.

Either way, one data point in Montana doesn’t change the fact that stars matter.

I'm so positive, you'll need AZT later.

If he does well in JC

He would be back in an FBS school.

by CODawg on Jan 17, 2012 10:14 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed.

The system obviously has some flaws in how the ratings are assigned

It’s not a perfect system, but there really is no sure fire way to evaluate high school athletes. If the NFL scouts can miss on guys who spent 5 years in college, I’m surprised anybody can make an educated guess on how a high school football player is going to mature, fill out, and end up as an athlete. Way too many variables.

"Stars"... like a moth to a flame...I "just can't help myself but fly into it"...

Did you notice how much more importance high stars impacted the Defensive side of the ball-towards overall team success? This has always been true…but, in this day of one arm tied behind their back officiating (“rules”..) high stars become even more of a premium…It’s just too full of variables to nail down like a science…(like weather) We all want a team of 5 stars but I’ll take hungry, talented and coachable 3 stars from the “Planet Zargon 5” if need be… Go Sark! Go Dawgs!

thanks for, uh, playing most of that one game against OSU

you were far and away superior to a corpse

in all seriousness, hope he does well elsewhere. I wish him the best.

I do hope he does well but that comment is crap.

Young kid, inexperienced, and had a bad frame, but let’s stay classy about a good kid.

Wish him the best.

It’s too bad he’s not sticking around, he seemed like a great team guy, a good kid, and it never hurts having Joe Montana hanging around your program.

All the best to ya Nick

Wish you were sticking around but it’s probably a good move at this point.

It's a James Sample jersey

You just didn’t know it. Or, Jeff Lindquist can now keep his #5, you might already have a Lindquist jersey!

Stop being an ass.

We know you weren’t impressed by him, bad mouthing him isn’t going to do any good, somebody might mistake you for an Oregon fan. Keep it classy.

by kirkd on Jan 16, 2012 7:43 PM PST up reply actions

I actually side with Steen here.

I will never understand why anyone bought a Montana jersey. That isn’t a rag on him at all, but why would anyone spend $60 on the jersey of a player who hadn’t done anything and was redshirtting or the backup. We must have been the only university in the country where more people owned the backup’s jersey than the starter’s.

Wondering why anyone would by a Montana jersey over a Locker, Polk, or Price jersey is a valid question if you ask me.

by UW11Bowdown on Jan 16, 2012 8:19 PM PST up reply actions

It's subjective.

People like what they like.

There is lack of support . . .

and there is bad mouthing a kid. I’m all for calling out coaches making tons of money, it’s part of there job. Players should be treated much differently. Especially a good kid, who was a great member of the team, regardless of how he did or did not perform on the field.

Anyone want to clarify what is fair game?

I don’t think he’s very good, but so what? When did criticism become bad form? I could name a certain DB that many here said much worse about than anything I’ve said about Montana.

bad form is continually bringing it up.

It’s always poor form to bad-mouth college players. It’s especially galling to see someone take every opportunity to point out why they think a player isn’t very good/over-rated/etc.

Their is nothing wrong about pilling on a paid coach or adminstrator. They are paid to get a job done. Please don’t pile on our players, it sends a pretty shitty message.

Can’t say I am too surprised – its a shame but it makes sense with the way our quarterback position is stacking up. Good luck and thank you for your contributions to the program. Go Dawgs!

he'a a good kid from a good family

Hope he does well in the next year so he gets two good years at a BCS school.

If he’d gotten the reps that KP got because of injury or something, there’s a good chance he’d be the presumed starter heading into spring. He just got caught up in the numbers while KP was catching lighnin’ in a bottle.

A sincere thanks, and all the best to him.

One position ... one ball

When Nick commited to UDub, their was a window of opportunity. He was highly recruited and chose Washington. He had every opportunity to win the job last offseason. Many thought he would be the guy to replace Jake Locker at the postion. But when the dust settled on the practice field Keith won the job. This is Keith’s team now, he’s earned it.

Going forward, the competition for the position will be even tougher. I’ll admit, I haven’t seen Linquist play, who is currently the No.8 QB prospect in the country. On the other hand I did catch a glimpse of Miles in the US Army game and he looked very polished, as polished as a high school QB could look. QBing isn’t like any other postion on the field. If you are a QB, then you are a QB. One position … one ball type deal. At other positions if a player finds himself burried on the depth chart, theirs always the chance the player can switch positions. D Ends can switch to LB and vice versa, receivers can switch to defensive back and vice versa, runningbacks have endless options to switch to. Linemen can got from offense to defense or vice versa. But most often a QB is a QB- one position one ball. In extreme situations he might be able to switch to receiver if he is athletic enough, but rare.

Nick is a bright kid and he wants to be a QB, I’m sure he’ll land on his feet somewhere. Wish him nothing but the best!

by crazidawg on Jan 17, 2012 8:17 AM PST reply actions

Miles didn't look polished at all to me

he looked good, but really raw mechanically. Lindquist on the other hand looks polished to me. His mechanics are good, and he’s more physically mature, if less athletically gifted than Miles.

by B Money on Jan 17, 2012 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

Miles

might remind some of locker. You are correct mechanics arent great but he is big, fast and has a huge arm.

One of these guys will probably start as a redshirt freshman or sophomore, and they other probably transfers like Montana. Great problem to have.

by CODawg on Jan 17, 2012 10:14 AM PST up reply actions

Never rule out dual QBs

If one doesn’t emerge as the starter, early on Sark could use a dual QB system until someone takes the lead. Having this much talent at QB is a good thing. It fuels competition.

Case and Point.

Hobert started EVERY game, Brunell only came in during the second half when the game was well in hand. He probably came in sooner than your average backup coming in for garbage time, but he very rarely got playing time in the first half. It was Hobert’s team until got in trouble.

In 1992, Hobert and Brunell split starts prior to Hobert being kicked off the team.

That being said, I certainly agree that I don’t want to see a two-QB system.

by Sundodger on Jan 17, 2012 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

Once Brunell was healthy

He saw significant time. Correct he did start but he play 2nd quarter and a lot fo 4th

by CODawg on Jan 19, 2012 9:15 AM PST up reply actions

Should work out really well . . .

When Price is a rs-senior, Brown will be a rs-sophomore, Lindquist and Miles will be rs-freshem. More importantly after Price graduates we will have two rs-sophomores and a rs-junior battling for the starting job. A VERY good situation to have.

by Lear Pilot on Jan 17, 2012 10:30 AM PST up reply actions

thats if both reshirt

It’s plausible that if Price misses any significant time that one could be out Brown. I know Brown is supposed to be good too. And if its just one game Brown probably gets the nod. But if Brown stuggles and its more than one game. We could see one of the freshman.

by CODawg on Jan 17, 2012 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

Yes...I agree but all these comments are valid yet...only speculative

What “is” is high caliber talent=Good… Very Good! Competitive quality kids like these are only going to bring out the best in overall team success as well as individual potential and we should all just try to enjoy the huge uptrend..I mean great news of the soon arriving Defensive resurgence. In honor of this last weekend; “I have a dream” …of a better than average Dawg Defense..and with Price and this offense that could make an immeasurable overall team improvement. New era! Sark just gave national notice…“Game on”!

by gliderdawg on Jan 17, 2012 11:36 AM PST up reply actions

Who cares?

I need to do some research before I have an opinion of his potential as OC, but really who cares? It’s Sark’s offense, Sark’s system, and Sark isn’t going to let him come in and make big changes. Our players know the system, they aren’t going to start over, any changes will be minor.

Yeah, agree on the OC thing. It's just a title with Sarkisian around.

I’m much more worried about who is going to be the QB’s coach. If Sarkisian is going to do it full time (instead of just part time, like he has the last three seasons), it’s going to take away from the other things he should be doing.

by Sundodger on Jan 17, 2012 1:38 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed.

I am hoping Sark will spend plenty of time mentoring which ever guy ends up being our QB coach.

Good point.

Either way we have a lot of talent, all of which will have plenty of time in the system by then. The best part of it is if we do have to burn one guys redshirt, you can still redshirt the other. Not to mention that all three will be working that much harder knowing they have tough competition. The more competition the better.
