Coaching Search Ticker | CoachingSearch.com
We are about to have an open OC position. I think we need to come to grips with this right now. We will be looking to backfill Nuss with a qualified QB mentor and one who may or may not be able to call plays in a versatile, hybrid, pro-style offense. Only those known as exceptional recruiters need apply. Hey, I hear Rick Neuheisel is looking for a job!
Candidate discussion time. Go for it.

I'm not happy about this
Whatever Sark & Nuss have been doing, it’s been working. Sure seems like he’s a great QB tutor. I know talented coaches will move on, but I think we’re seeing the result of Sark calling his own plays and being viewed as his own OC – Nuss is moving to the same job, but the reality is he’ll have more responsibility than he had here.
Sark never gave Nuss the OC responsibility....
nor full QB responsibility for that matter. Just like Holt was never responsible for the USC defense under Pete Carroll.
watching practices...
…I wouldn’t totally discount the work Nuss did with the QBs. Sark wasn’t 100% dedicated to coaching up the QBs.
Ok. Let's start dreaming up candidates
I’m way out of my comfort zone, but I’m going to throw out:
Jim Michalczik
Major Applewhite
Jay Norvell
Josh Heuppel
Mike Johnson
Robert Anae
Who else? I’m grasping at straws here.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
Probably too much of a step down for him
Going NFL to college and having to share duties with Sark, but worth a look
Major Applewhite!!!????
Do you mean throw him out of contention or throw him out there as a candidate?
If you are actually saying he is a candidate, I feel like we are taking about 6 steps backwards. Applewhite last season was running backs coach here in Austin and couldn’t even decide who the starting rb was all year. He now is “Co-offensive” coordinator. I think the onl;y reason he is around is because Macky Brown still feels bad for benching him for an unproven Chris Simms a few years back. Applewhite is a terrible coach. How dare you sir, how dare you!

Like it or not, he's highly regarded as an "up and comer" and fits the profile that Sark is looking for
… someone who he can split OC duties with and who won’t demand to call plays.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
Highly regarded
My oh my, that’s not looking good for the people highly regarding things. If we hire this dude we will certainly look like UT in terms of QB play. I mean over the last two seasons. If you want you can look it up, if not trust me, their QB play has been bad!

You know I thought about that
I still don’t want Major. I do admit, I know little of his recruiting skills though. If he is a great recruiter I’m sold. It’s just I don’t have much faith in the coaching school of Mack Brown.

let's make a big run at Michalczik
But if we do so, it means firing Cozzetto and still having to find a QB coach.
Johnnie Morton just got suggested by Condotta via Twitter...
… good one – I hadn’t even thought of him.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
Cody Pickett.
I hear he’s looking at getting into coaching.

What about Jim Zorn???
He’d be a great quarterback coach and has been a head coach. I think he’s just a qb coach this year, so he might want to come back to Seattle to be an OC.

I'd be good with Zorn.
Tons of experience with QB’s and pro style offenses.

I actually like the name Zorn
We have a slew of young coaches on this staff and that is good for building excitement and recruiting. But QBs need to have a cool and collective head, and must demonstrate great poise in the pocket. I would think an experienced veteran coach would be a perfect postion coach at QB. Plus it could be a nice recruiting advantage knowing that your position coach has quarterbacked in the pros. Maybe it doesn’t feel right due to age difference or something to that effect. I say big deal as long as the working relationship is there and Zorn comes to win.
All I saw was purple
I'm not sure he's ever had an interest in coaching college football.
If he does, he certainly has the pedigree.
However, I’ve found the current trend in coaches that Sarkisian has been targeting to be younger coaches. Zorn is almost 60 years old now.

It wouldn't hurt . . .
to have a few gray hairs on our coaching staff.

He can certainly spell spread or over/under
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
don't forget . . . .
probation, sanctions, ncaa investigations . . .

sure
It was really more of a lack of leadership in the athletic program that got us on probabtion. And really that did not hurt us.
Don’t get me wrong slick rick made many mistakes but he also took the fall that was not entirely his fault.

Nuss getting promoted to OC at Alabama reflects VERY well on Sark & our program
Now Sark has to come up w/ another good hire. I’m sure glad we hit the coach Carousel after the new TV deal was signed . . .

I was just keeping my hopes up for him to stay. Good luck to him if he leaves.

Why are we going here?
Is Nuss to Alabama official? If it’s not, I think we are jumping the gun.
All I saw was purple
Given that two of the three candidates have taken or are about to take other jobs, I'd say it is almost official...
… and, c’mon, what a great opportunity for him. He has to take it!
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
I'mactually with you.
I’d much rather wait until there is something official.

However...
In the hypothetical notion that Nuss is offered the job at Alabama and accepts. Whose to say that we need an offenisve coordinator? I’m thinking a QB coach is more then suitable for what we need.
Throwing a name out there, not sure it sticks: Johnathan Smith. GA at Oregon State, QBs coach at Idaho [see Nathen Enderly], worked at Montana (not sure in what capacity), now employed at BSU.
All I saw was purple
I agree with your basic theory
We would need a good QB coach, it’s Sark’s offense and everybody knows it. Promote Cozzetto to “full time” offensive coordinator and get a really good QB coach.
My preference is definitely to keep Nussmeier. If Sark gives up the play calling, this could end up being good for the entire program. Give Nuss a raise and control of the offense, especially play calling, let Sark focus on the entire program. It’s a win, win.
"Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."
"Legends are made on the shores of Lake Washington"
this would be beter for stabilty right now
it is only a matter of time before Nuss moves on.
Sark can always take back playcalling when he has the other phases producing better.
the "Bama interest means Nuss deserves a raise.
Coz?
I know the guy can coach linemen, he’s done a great job with what he had to begin with and it’s gotten better every season. I like him as O line coach and running coordinator. Not sure if Offensive Coordinator should be extended, but I’ve been known to be wrong before.
All I saw was purple
Sark is the one calling the plays and mentoring Qbs...
Sark is also mentoring Nuss as well. Nuss is talented but let’s not oversell his importance. Goobye and Good Luck Nuss!
hire within
Jimmie Dougherty to QB/OC position
and bring in:
http://www.nevadawolfpack.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/baumgartner_scott00.html
for receivers.
worse case we don’t Lupoi and Cal needs to pony up.
best case we get Tosh and Nuss gets more responsibility and UW pays Nuss what he’d be worth at ’Bama.
condotta is tweeting Dougherty to OC
by PandG on Jan 16, 2012 12:32 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Condotta is tweeting that there's an awful lot of increasing buzz about Nussmeier going to Alabama
so this looks like it’s creeping towards a done deal
For what?
He basically has ZERO experience.

if you try google
http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/roth_yogi00.html
pluse elite 11 qb camp he has networked with all high schools coast to coast
We can do better than this...
Either more proven success…or a better fit within a system that’s as close to “turn key” as I’ve seen around here in many years!
Normal OC job at uw I agree we could do better.
But we are talking nick holt dc at usc type tittle. Yogi was sarks grad assit. Since he has become a qb camp warrior, witch would be a great transition to recruiting we don’t need a true OC
Yogi Roth is a blithering fucking idiot.
He’s a self promoting talentless hack. Pray Sark would never hire that retard.
I'm so positive, you'll need AZT later.

Ive seen one interview of the guy.
Along with reading few other peoples opinions. The guy is either an idiot savant or regular old idiot. I’m betting on the latter.

Question:
If Nuss is hired by Saben, would Nuss Martinesque an attempt to take one of our commited QBs with him?
All I saw was purple
miles
Said he might take other visits
by CODawg on Jan 16, 2012 6:22 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
yeah, saw that
Funny that he’d say that just one day after claiming he was 100% solid to Washington despite Nussmeier leaving, and that you “commit to a school, not a coach”.
Well, he did say "might"
Not that he will. I also have not seen him say that he was done taking visits to other schools.

They won't get Lindquist
So I really don’t care.
"Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."
"Legends are made on the shores of Lake Washington"
you've already chosen Lindquist over Miles, eh?
I don’t think I’m there.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
@chrislandon
Who cares?
I don’t have a preference, either one should be able to extremely successful under Sark. The local guy is less likely to leave, as long as we get one of them, we are in great shape.
"Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."

Well that's interesting -
Zach Banner never re-scheduled a trip to USC and with Basketball season in full swing, it appears very unlikely that he will get a trip in.
Down to UW and Oklahoma? – I think so.
I also think Zach will commit to the Dawgs.
OMG
I can’t believe some folks here are actually bringing up the name “Rick Neuheisel”. Really?
Don't know how a disgusted
OMG comes accross as a girl, but ok, I hope you feel better now :-)

Whoever we get
to replace Nuss, you best believe that he will be a “proven” recruiter. Sark wants people who can sell this program to high school recruits. If they’re not top-notch recruiters, scratch them off your list.
We have enough recruiters.
I want somebody who can COACH.
