Jamora to miss season with torn ACL

DE Haouli Jamora, a sophomore from Laie, Hawai'i, tore an anterior cruciate ligament early in the Cal game. He will have surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Jamora was a standout who started all four games at defensive end this year, totaling 15 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack.

Since this was the fourth game of the year I am not sure if he qualifies for a medical red shirt.

Expect to see a lot more of Andrew Hudson and Josh Shirley starting this Saturday....count on Everrette Thompson spending most of his time outside too.

Update: According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times the injury happened during the first half of the game which means that he will likely be granted a fifth year.

Tough break, Hau’oli. You, Deonte Cooper, and Adam Long need to push each other in rehab. Best of luck to you.

NCAA guidelines say that a player must play in less than 30% of games, and none after the midway point of the season to get a medical hardship waiver. Jamora should get this year back without having to petition the NCAA at the end of his career, especially since he never redshirted. The only potential bright spot in otherwise really bad news.

Defensive Front

Losing Jamora is going to be felt. Hopefully Hudson and Shirley can team tag that position in his absence. Looking at our defensive front, we are down a D End, Ta’amu is playing with a broken hand, and we still haven’t had the services of Lawrence Lagafuaina. How is Ta’amu’s hand healing and when is Lagafuaina expected to return? Getting him back would allow us to play Thompson outside for a nice D End rotation.

I think you mean Tokolahi.

Lagafuina is fine, and played several snaps on Saturday.

I heard Tokolahi got some snaps against Nebraska, but I didn’t notice him in there. I didn’t notice either way on Saturday.

Hudson doesn’t really play that weak end position. He might have to, now, though. If he doesn’t have the quickness for it, I wonder about taking a look at a guy like Kearse there…

As an aside, Kearse needs to change his number. 58 seems like a slow, plodding linebacker. He needs a “fast” linebacker number. Single digits, or 12 or something like that.

Tokolahi

The big test for Tokolahi will come after the bye week against Colorado….that has always been the goal…get him ready to make a mark over the second half of the season.

yes - it is clearly Shirley time...

… does he step up and be his own version of Jamora 2010 or is the stage just too big at this point in his career? Utah is a good test. What their O-Line lacks in talent, they more than make up for in nastiness and fight.

This is unfortunate news

Seems like now they have to play Thomson at end and rotate more guys, hopefully they get better up front and keep the growth coming with the youth

A true shame

both for Jamora himself, the team and Dawg fans everywhere. I know I speak for the rest of the community when I say that we wish him nothing but the best and can’t wait to see him back next season.

Based on the NCAA rules he should pretty easily get a medical redshirt which is nice I suppose. Hopefully Josh Shirley and company can effectively fill this spot. If our DTs start getting healthy that will help take some of the pressure off of the young players who are going to be asked to step up.

Definite loss....but...

I think we have enough depth here to be OK.

UW Dawg Pound - SBN Seattle

by John Berkowitz on Sep 26, 2011 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions

True..but..

While I agree that we should be fine for now, depth at D line has to be a concern going forward especially until players like Ta’amu get more healthy. With him limited and missing players our line is weaker than many of us suspected and certainly weaker than will be necessary for us really to put together a special season.

In short while I like that we do have options here, whenever you lose a starter to injury, especially at a key spot on the D line where we have already taken some other hits, depth is a major concern. Combined with injuries elsewhere on the defense we have to hope that we get more of our guys healthy soon. Our ideal scenario is probably squeaking by for two weeks and getting to the bye to let our players rest up and get healthy for the tough end of the season run. Hopefully we won’t see too many more significant injuries between now and then.

We aren’t at ASU or OSU levels yet but cause for concern losing a proven play maker like Jamora.

Remember where Thompson started out at

He can play both inside and out, and we have depth. Young, yes, but “Next man up.” We’ve been through worse.

Starting for a Reason

The coaches name our starters based off of who they believe is going to give us the best play so every time we see a starter go down I get concerned.

As much as I love what Sark, Holt and company have done to increase our depth at positions like D line I hate having to see even more young players step up when we already have a roster filled to the brim with young talent being asked to step into big roles. As we have seen with Kasen and ASJ young players will make some mistakes and those mistakes can turn the tide and prove especially costly in tough road environments such as this coming Saturday.

I do hope I am wrong, I would love to see Shirley and Hudson come out and dominate, and they absolutely have the talent to do so however we can’t afford major mistakes in a tough road environment in Salt Lake City.

Roast Duck is a delicacy.

by PurpleHeart on Sep 26, 2011 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

Starter means less on the D line than other positions

D lines rotate more than anyone, depending on the situation. You never want to see a starter go down, but going into the season D line was supposed to be out deepest, most talented position group. Now its time for them to prove it.

Duck hunting season has officially begun.

by S_o_Smith on Sep 26, 2011 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Look at what's gone on on the line, though.

Down two starters the first three games, and another gone early in game four.

The depth is literally entirely composed of freshmen.

Getting Potoa’e back definitely helps, assuming he’s 100%.

But the line is still down 2 starters.

by Sundodger on Sep 26, 2011 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Through 4

Up until now, we certainly haven’t shown that depth or talent for the most part. Part of that may be having some players banged up, part of it may be somewhat conservative game planning but the fact remains that we haven’t generated much pass rush (or been able to stop the run against good teams – see Nebraska).

We have a total of six sacks on the year and I remember one of them was due to Maynard tripping and falling when taking a snap.. that doesn’t bode well for our pass rush.

We didn’t generate much pass rush against Eastern in game 1 but I wasn’t that worried – its game 1 right? However, look at Eastern’s track record so far this year. Sure they are running 3 step drops all day against us but since then their QB has been sacked multiple times in each game. 5 by Montana State, 3 by Montana, 3 by South Dakota – we got 1. They haven’t won a game this year.

Game 2 versus Hawaii a team that is now 2-2 we got 2 sacks. Colorado got 5. UNLV (remember these guys who got ripped by the Cougs but beat Hawaii?) got 3. Even lowly UC Davis got a sack and they were entirely overmatched.

Game 3 versus Nebraska with 3 walk-ons starting on their O line? Just look at their offensive numbers. Sure we got 2 sacks but we gave up 309 yards rushing and 22 first downs. We have the second worst defense in the conference (and Arizone who is last has played 3 top 10 teams..). Sure we have done well in the red zone at times but we haven’t been good.

We are now down what, three starters on the D line? Well I guess Potoa’e is back so I suppose it is two now. However half our two deep is freshmen and they will have to grow up in a hurry as our schedule starts ramping up soon. We have potential but haven’t shown much of anything on the d line. We need to find a way to attack passers (since clearly our secondary is a sieve, just look at those numbers) or we are going to have a rough time playing teams like Arizona and Stanford.

by PurpleHeart on Sep 26, 2011 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions

According to Sark after every one of those games in a nutshell

“Our guys need to listen to the coaching points and apply them.” Its on the players not going full speed to the QB when called upon to do so. They need to quit thinking and “prove it” now. That’s why the game plan has been so conservative, the coaches cant trust them 100% quite yet. That should change as the season progresses.

Duck hunting season has officially begun.

by S_o_Smith on Sep 26, 2011 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

This is where line depth is a huge concern.

If we lose another player on the DL – DE or DT – it could get ugly pretty fast.

by huskies2010 on Sep 26, 2011 10:42 AM PDT reply actions

Sure could be. But Hudson is coming on nicely and we saw some good things from Shirley. At this point Thompson’s role will probably be outside. Losing Jamora does deflate our depth at D End. I can’t say for sure how much in deflates our depth at DT though. We are pretty deep there. Ta’amu, Lagafuaina, Tokolahi, Pateo’e, and Shelton all seem like they could rotate nicely. I don’t see too much fall out with any of these guys inserted at any point during a game.

I agree that losing another D End could really hammer the growth of our defensive front. Yet it does provide Hudson and Shirley a chance to bring their games up a new level. I’m excited to see what both can do. Hell I’ve liked Hudson well before he even commited to UDub. You can tell by the way his body has been transformed since H.S. that he has been working hard to get on the field.

Having to move Thompson outside doesn't help.

And the guys you listed include a true freshman, an RS freshman, a true sophomore, and a guy coming off a serious leg injury. I mean, I like what I’ve seen from all of them in limited time, but I’m really not sure I trust the depth.

by huskies2010 on Sep 26, 2011 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

Thompson was moved outside in advance of this...

Outside is where the coaches have always wanted him…he played inside while Potoae and Tokolahi where getting healthy.

He started outside against Cal and had his best game of the season.

Cal's o-line might not be very good,

But that was as stout as the d-line has looked all season. The pass rush was still non-existant, but there were almost no instances of a d-line player getting pushed 6 yards downfield.

Shirley in particular was far more stout than I would’ve expected.

by Sundodger on Sep 26, 2011 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd call it "getting" to move Thompson outside.

Yes, it hurts depth at tackle. But he hasn’t gotten the job done. And the strong end has done literally nothing so far this season. Thompson will hopefully be more stout there.

by Sundodger on Sep 26, 2011 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Think a Healthy Ta'amu

Make no mistake Alameda Ta’amu is the core guy on the defensive front. As that hand heels, he will be the main cog of the defense. When he needs a blow, we’ve got guys capable of playing well.

Exactly!

I think these two studs are ready to go. I like their speed off the edge. Jamora is ideal speed+size+strength+agility. This injury could change the way our defensive front plays. Hudson and Shirley provide speed on the edge.

by PurpleHeart on Sep 26, 2011 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Like I said this may change the way our defensive front plays. It comes as no surprise that we need a better pass rush- something that has been missing and has left our secondary to cover longer then we are comfortable with. Having smaller D Ends, do we insert bigger LBs on the outside? Bringing in Kearse and Gilliland to play with Dennison could be a real lethal group to scheme some really good blitzes. I think we are going to see more of Kearse and Gilliland now that we are playing smaller D Ends to assist opposing runs designed to attack the perimeter.

All I saw was purple

by crazidawg on Sep 26, 2011 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Pass D

I don’t think our problems with pass D can be attributed to having to cover for long periods, at least not entirely. We have seen some pretty boneheaded plays by some secondary players and we were torn apart by Eastern’s quick march short passing game. Princeton Fuimaono and Garret Gilliland are now listed as co-starters on the depth chart so you may be right about that. Hopefully as our young LBs mature and get more up to game speed they can take some of the pressure off of our D Line.

Roast Duck is a delicacy.

by PurpleHeart on Sep 26, 2011 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Hurrying the throw

What I mean by “covering longer” is that we aren’t getting much pressure on the opposing QB, where he can take his time and allow routes to get open. Example: Cal’s big play that went for a TD early in the game. We need to hurry that throw. Granted our corner was no where in sight of the receiver, but if we can apply more pressure, that ball is thrown faster and the QB doesn’t have time to pump fake our safety out of position.

Husky Starters for UTAH

Josh Shirley is listed as the starter at defensive end in place of the injury Hau’oli Jamora, and Everrette Thompson is now listed as the starter at the other end spot, reflecting the move made last week when he went to end and Sione Potoa’e moved to tackle. Potoa’e is now listed as the starter at the other tackle spot.

Potoa'e

I think we’ve all been waiting for this guy to make the jump to starter. I’m not expecting him to go all Suh on Utah. Going up aganist Utah, I just want him to concentrate on occupying Utah’s linemen and anchor down his gap assignment. This guy could be a beast, but for now it’s about progressing into a fine Pac 12 caliber DT.

Potoa'e is a 3-tech, not a nose.

His knees are what kept him out the first couple of games. If he was healthy, he would’ve been playing all along and probably starting so Thompson could’ve been outside.

That was my thought initially

But I wouldn’t be surprised to see him moved to nose if Shelton proves the better pass rusher inside.

nope

No way Potoa’e plays NT ahead of Shelton. Shelton might get some time at 3T with Lagafuaina at NT (Shelton was playing alongside Ta’amu on Saturday), but Shelton’s body type is far more suited for NT than 3T, and vice versa with Potoa’e.

Im just worried about those knees like sundodger said. If he keeps having problems with them he wont be getting to the QB as well. All just speculation at this, time will tell.

his knees are definitely a concern

When it first came to light this summer/fall that he was dealing with knee issues, that was a major red flag to me. It’s hard to believe that his production (or lack thereof) so far isn’t related to his knees not being 100%.
