Pac 12 Pick-em - Week Four

Colorado at Ohio State

The Buffalo's are improving and Ohio State has dropped out of the top 25 for the first time in a zillion years. That being said Ohio State isn't going to have much of a problem beating these guys.

Vegas - Ohio State by 15 1/2 - John B Picks - Ohio State 35 Colorado 17

UCLA at Oregon State

The winner gets to live another day and the loser is headed to the basement for the rest of the season.

Vegas - Oregon State by 5 - John B Picks Oregon State 31 UCLA 24

USC at Arizona State

Biggest game in the South this season. ASU and Erickson have something to prove after a disappointing road trip to Illinois.

Vegas - ASU by 2.5 - John B Picks - ASU 27 USC 24

Oregon at Arizona

This one should be over quickly even though it is on the road. Arizona ust doesn't have it on either side of the ball this year.

Vegas - Oregon by 16 - John B Picks - Oregon 42 Arizona 17

HOLT DEFENSE

64 freshman, sophmores. 45 freshman. In two years we will have “USC type players” y’all are so fond of.
Very few teams have had to basically build from scratch. SMU comes to mind.

Our death penalty was self inflicted.

Those of you who require instant gratification need to suck it up and support our rebuilding program.
For those who say we have seniors I agree. 85 minus 64 leaves 21 juniors and seniors. How many are starters I do not know but I would guess less than half. Two are punters and some have transferred.
So get on board little Dawgies, get on board.
Have been Husky fan since Don Heinrich and yes it has been worse in the past, much worse.

six years?

I am talking about 60 years. You are still wet behind the ears.
HOLT today on KJR:
One thing Holt said today that kind of explains everything was that we are starting three seniors on defense.
How about it Steen how far back when we had three seniors starting on defense.
Six years that blows my mind. My book “100 years of Husky Football” was printed in 1990.

Purpledawg,

The most recent thread about the defense, its critics, and its defenders (no pun intended) is here. Knowing Coach Holt, there will be another soon. Please refrain from hijacking threads.

Thank you very much, sir.

Crazi Picks

Colorado at Ohio State: Colorado wants to compete, but they just don’t have all the pieces in place yet. Taking the home team on a big stage. The pick: Ohio State 38 Colorado 20.

Ucla at Oregon State: I picked the Bruins last week at home on the big stage and Neuheiesl’s team simply looked awful. If Ucla loses this game the fire Neuheisel chatter will go from not if, but when? The pick: Oregon State 28 Ucla 24

USC at Arizona State: Tough one to call. ASU has more riding on this game then USC, given the fact that USC can’t play for the inaugeral Pac 12 championship. Field positon and turnovers might play a pivital role in this one. The Pick: USC 33 Arizona State 31

Oregon at Arizona: Their is something to be said about knowing your competition and a poor performance from one week doesn’t neccessarily equate to a poor performance the following week. Arizona doesn’t look very good. But they do know how to defend the spread. Game is closer then most think. The Pick: Oregon 39 Arizona 31

California at Washington: The Washington offense only gets better. Coach Holt and the defensive players have heard all the complaints. The defense really steps up and offers their best performance of the young season. The Pick: Washington 27 Cal 21

I wish we had a Vegas line for the UW game in the post, though I know John makes his UW pick a separate post. From what I’m seeing on google, the line is anything from pick’em to 2.5 for UW. I’ll pick UW here if they are favored by anything less than 6, otherwise Cal to cover.

Noted for accuracy previous thread: PAC-12 SIGHT LINES
first five comments were on music from the 60s,70s and 80s. Total of six.

Wrong again.

Read the damn post. In the post, Gekko mentioned music that was stuck in his head, so people comment on it.

Where is the relationship to football?

Support our student athletes, have faith in the coaches! "...it's how you play the game!"

by Purpledawg on Sep 23, 2011 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

This is a blog for Washington Huskies,

and our interests are more diverse than football. The content of each post dictates the nature of its comments. If Gekko mentions music, that is fair game in the comments. Moreover, everyone here is well aware of the fact that comments grow organically. We may begin discussing defense and the topic may, naturally, evolve into something that has nothing to do with Husky athletics whatsoever. I would invite you to think of a message board like this as a public house, where we all come together out of an interest in Husky sports, but where we can meet with new friends and old and talk as friends talk. Each post is a table at which a different topic is being discussed. The trick is to stop by each table and eavesdrop before speaking in order to find the best place to say what you have come to say.

As Lear observed, if you look at the music discussion under Gekko’s post, you’ll notice that Gekko introduced the subject and each person in that sub-thread is replying to the person before and remaining on the same subject. What you do is different.

Your comments are often great non sequiturs. You often choose the top post on the blog to add your comments on whatever strikes you. Perhaps you have recruiting news. You might comment on it in the newest post, even if that post is about defense, when a post on recruiting might be found below if you give it a look.

We understand that you are here to talk about football, and we are grateful for your insights, opinions, and historical perspective. Some people are here to talk about more, and that is their prerogative and something that we encourage.

Again, let’s imagine that each post is a table in the imaginary pub, and that there is a different conversation at each table. If we are talking about the what we think will happen during the Cal game at this table, it is consider poor Internet etiquette for someone to sit down and blurt out his opinion on conference realignment. It is possible for a group of people, in a conversation, to collectively wander there, but there is a difference between that natural progression and one person forcibly changing the subject, especially when there is often a table (or a post) where that subject is already being discussed.

Thank you for your patience with us and your understanding.

Kirk's picks

Feels like these are starting to get a lot tougher – something about conference play jacks up the difficulty. Plus, most of these just seem like really evenly matched games. Ah well, I’m not actually putting money on these, so what the hey…

Ohio State 27, Colorado 17 (Colorado covers)
The Buckeyes have taken a step back with all the player suspensions and Tressel out, and the Buffaloes seem to be improving. Ohio State’s offense has been nothing special so far and defense has been fairly good for Jon Embree’s team. That said, Ohio State’s defense has been tough so far and playing at the Horseshoe is a tough task. I’m expecting a relatively low-scoring game with Ohio State earning a workmanlike, if unimpressive win.

Oregon State 30, UCLA 24 (Oregon State covers)
I’m tempted to say that Neuheisel will pull one out of his hat with his seat about as hot as it can get before he actually gets fired, but I think he’s already lost the Bruin players and they’re doomed to play out the string with an ugly season. Oregon State gets a few key players back and gain a little confidence on offense against a severely under-performing Bruin defense. UCLA should score – they’re offense has actually been pretty good – but I just don’t think their hearts are in it and Oregon State escapes the basement.

USC 35, Arizona State 21 (USC covers)
The Trojan offense is hitting high gear while the Sun Devil defense keeps losing players to injury – uh oh! And old man Kiffin’s defense is playing well after a tough debut last year – I’m sure he’s licking his chops looking at what the Zooker did to ASU’s offensive line (Osweiler sacked 6 times). USC doesn’t have nearly the depth they used to (and it’s only going to get worse), but they’ve been lucky with regards to injury so far this year and I see them putting another dent in Erickson’s job security.

Oregon 51, Arizona 20 (Oregon covers)
The easiest call of the week – for a guy who made his rep on defense, Stoops is overseeing an awful unit this year, which means big trouble vs. the Ducks. Foles and the ’Zona wide receivers from a strong passing game, but his line sucks and the Ducks have done well against the pass this year. The Chipster will have little mercy on Stoops as Oregon tries to climb back into BCS consideration.

UW 35, Cal 30 (UW covers)
I’m counting on a few things here: A) Price stays healthy enough to play the whole game; B) Maynard throws some untimely picks for Cal; C) our defense finally starts showing some signs of life, and D) the home crowd brings the noise tomorrow. This pick is as much with the heart as the head, but I think the Huskies have played the tougher schedule and the offense continues to impress, doing enough to overcome a shaky defense.

tough week

picks

Ohio State 28 Colorado 14 (Buffs cover)- Abrupt ending to the Colorado State honeymoon. Buckeyes aren’t great but shouldn’t have much trouble here.

Oregon State 23 UCLA 21 (Bruins cover)- The Demotivation Bowl- I think the Bruins want it just a little less. Rick better start cleaning out his office.

ASU 24 USC 21(Devils cover)- In the battle of teams that I stubbornly pick against each week, ASU finds a way to squeak it out at home (or Kiffin and Barkley find a way to lose it).

Oregon 49 Arizona 17 (Ducks cover)- Arizona looked completely overmatched against OSU & Stanford, so why should this one be any different?

UW 37 Cal 31 (Huskies cover)- Should be a high scoring game neither offense having much trouble moving the ball. I see a couple big defensive stops and an advantage in the kicking game being the edge for the Huskies.

Gave myself a heart attack

Work kept me busy, then it dawned on me that Colorado vs. OSU could have been an early kick off. I’d hate to have missed a gimme!

Ohio State by 28

UCLA by 7 – Shocked by all the OSU picks. It is about that time of year that Mike Riley gets his teams winning, but has OSU shown any signs of being a FBS team?? I’m going with Slick Rick on this one.

USC by 7 – USC is improving, ASU lost to Illinios. Nuff Said.

Oregon by 28 – I’d pay to be wrong, but I won’t be.

UW by 3 – Such a tough pick, if I wasn’t such a homer I’d pick Cal. The temperature of Nick Holt’s backside keeps rising as yet another team makes our defense their bitch.
