Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

the Gekko File: Eastern Washington

Everyone and their mothers are doing previews of opponents on their site.  You yahoos are sorely deserving of the same mistreatment that other SBN blogs give their brethren.  And, since I know you will never read anything posted on the right hand side of this screen, I think I'm free to say whatever I want about any of you with a sense of assurance that you'll never know it.  So here is a shout out to you monkeys of Monklake - I'm talking about you Carl, Crazi, Kirk, Prr, Lear, B-Money, Cassino, OldD, JB, Joe, Bugs, and Lorenzo.  Here's muck in your eyes.

EASTERN WASHINGTON - A Preview

You obviously know that Eastern Washington is the reigning FCS champion, that their main campus is in Cheney, and that their standout tailback, Taiwan Jones, is gone after having been drafted in the NFL draft.  But, did you know:

.. that their Mascot is the Eagles and that their team colors are Red and White?

.. that their Head Coach, Beau Baldwin, is a former Central Wash QB who coached there (including serving as QB coach to Jon Kitna) for 10 years before spending the last seven at Eastern?

.. that EWU has produced over 20,000 teachers spread throughout the nation?  If you assume that each one of them is teaching 10 students on average this year (some attrition must be accounted for) than that means that there are 200,000 kids in the United States who are getting taught by an EWU grad.  And you thought illegal immigration was an epidemic.

.. that their two most significant players on offense are QB Bo Levi Mitchell and WR Brandon Kaufman?  Mitchell has managed to grow and prosper despite being burdened with a first name of epic redneck proportions.  He is a senior transfer from SMU who was the Eagles' best player last year having thrown for over 3000 yds with 37 TDs against 15 INTs.  Kaufman was his favorite target.  In the FCS Championship game alone, they hooked up for 120 yds on nine completions

.. that the EWU defense boasts two all-Americans who are, in real life, twin brothers?  Safety Matt Johnson and Linebacker Zach Johnson are probably the two best players on the EWU D.  Matt had five interceptions last season.  Zach averaged 9 tackles a game as a junior and now steps in as the heart of the D with the graduation of EWU's best defensive player from last season, JC Sherritt.

.. that EWU lost two games last season (by 25 pts @ Nevada and by 23 pts vs Montana St) before ticking off 11 straight victories en route to their FCS title claim?

.. the EWU campus claims that its student population is 57% female?  What they don't tell you is that the first 53% of them would get crushed by Rosie O'Donnell in a Miss Fitness USA conference while the remaining 4% are lesbian

.. that EWU has a big challenge in Special Teams?  Kicker Mike Jarrett is a typical 50% PK type of guy with limited range while the P job is unfilled following the graduation of Cam Zuber

.. that EWU's best o-lineman is Gabriel Jackson?  He is a 6-4, 280 lb Tacoma native who earned second team all-Big Sky honors last year.  He also likes puppies and long walks on the beach and he is reportedly looking forward to the challenge of lining up against Hau'oli Jamora.

.. that EWU, along with every other FCS school in the land, has never played UW?  In fact, Washington, Notre Dame, UCLA and USC are the only FBS schools to have never played an FCS program ... until this season.

.. that EWU is both a favorite to win the Big Sky again this year and ranked #1 in the pre-season poll for the FCS?  Their biggest competition in the Big Sky is expected to come from both Montana and Montana State while the other contenders in the FCS are expected to be Appalachian State, North Dakota State and William and Mary (among others)

EASTERN WASHINGTON @ WASHINGTON PREVIEW:

Outside the friendly confines of their hideously red-painted Roos Field, EWU is still an FCS school.  This is not a slight as much as it is a statement of fact. All-time, FBS schools are 1740-388-17 vs FCS schools for a stunning 81% win rate.  In the Pac 12, there have only been four wins by FCS schools vs FBS opponents, and two of those happened against Colorado and Utah, respectively.  The biggest upset in the old Pac 10 was probably UC Davis beating a very bad Stanford team in 2005 (the other was a Montana victory over a very bad Oregon St team in the mid-nineties).

Don't be frightened by the fact that the Cougs almost got beat by Montana two years ago (ok, I know that you weren't, I just wanted a reason to call out the Cougs for that near-miss).  The Eagles have no advantages along the lines and will have a very difficult time defending UW's athletes on the perimeter.  The best shot the Eagles have is to spread out the field and lean on the talents of Bo Levi (at SMU, he played for June Jones' run and shoot) to catch Huskies unprepared.  They are going to have to score a lot of points, because UW will just be too dominating when they have the ball.  I don't see it.

PREDICTIONS:  PAIN.... I mean .... EWU 10  -  UW  38

- Callier will score his first two NCAA TDs
- Price will throw for 220 yds and two TDs
- Shirley will record his first NCAA sack
- UW is going to block a punt ... I'm betting Glenn is the lucky guy
- Alameda will make at least two EWU o-linemen poo their pants
- Coach Sark will not get a Gatorade bath

Nice!

Good write-up, thanks! This is a game I am much looking forward to. Besides this being a great way to get a off to a 1-0 start (why not? almost everyone else has been doing it?) and a game when our team can get in some game-time without getting banged up a lot, it is also something that has never happened before: Wwe are playing another team from Washington State, and it is not the F’ing Cougars.

In years past, when the Dawgs are on the road, and I am remaining here, I’ve headed over to make to some EWU games. They are a great crowd, and have a great program going in the FCS division. Its pretty cool that on our first game against an FCS program, that we are playing the National Champions, who are starting off rated #1. Looks to me like EWU has nothing to lose, and will indeed play a wide-open game. This is going to be interesting & fun. And I think we will much like our visitors from Eastern WA, who are much better to hang our with, than Cougs.

As a final note: Don’t ever expect the Cougs to play against the Eagles. Too much chance that EWU would beat WSU, as they almost certainly could have these last couple of years.

You know, if you're finally going to break your FCS cherry...

How cool is it to do it against the defending FCS champion?

Pretty damn cool..

Great Job!

Interesting read, hopefully you’ll do more. I feel kind of slighted though, because you didn’t call me out too…:O(

I’m going to enjoy watching this game! I think it’s going to turn into a track meet with the DAWGS just pouring it on. It’ll be great to get those very good second teamers some valuable playing time. You get up early on these guys and slam the door. The longer you let them hand around the harder they will play. GO DAWGS!!

Nice write up.

I think Eastern will be a good warm up for the Hawaii game. It should tell us if we can FINALLY play zone defense without giving up 300+ yards of defense and making a Heisman candidate out of the opposing QB. If Eastern’s offense puts up good numbers, I’ll be pretty nervous when Hawaii comes to town.

People laugh at Big Time Programs playing Div 2 ( ie: FCS ) Schools But...

what do they know, anyhow?

The last thing the Huskies need is to drop a opener and lose all the momentum that was generated by the good season last year.

Let the Oregons of the world play top ranked opponents to open the season. See if they aren’t a bit jealous should they drop that LSU game and wish instead they had scheduled a cupcake and guaranteed a win on which to build!

Gosh this is the first time...

…Washington has EVER played this level of an opponent! Correct me if I’m wrong but Oregon has been playing the Montanas and Portland States forever!

So I went outside and noticed a dead gecko today being carried off by ants. Its an omen. lol

Good write up. The overall talent level will overwhelm them no matter how much of an initial chip on their shoulder they show up with. I think if you are the EWU coach, you hope to come out of this not getting your stars killed and possibly lost for the regular season, and look at it as more of a “thank you Mr AD for scheduling this to solve your money problems” game.
Along the same lines, I hope we don’t take any hits to our players as this could turn into a frustration type game for EWU where players emotions get out of hand in a rout. Hopefully, Jamora and the boys will be on the sidelines most of the second half, Great opportunity to see who wants to get into the rotation for the season, esp at OL , LB and DBs.

I hope you meant OldD(awg) wise guy!

I’m always suspicious of people who refer to themselves in the third person, e.g. “The Gekko Files.” And Eastern’s mascot (singular) is an eagle, just like Dubs is a husky; their team is “The Eagles.”

PS- I noticed the same thing prrbrr. Omen indeed!!! 8D>

Expect to Win!!!

by OLDDOG on Aug 22, 2011 8:27 AM PDT reply actions

Notice how you boys didn't notice me until I got bumped...

… and Gekko is a reference to the famous Gordon Gekko. So, in effect, its not absolutely always a self in the third person reference (although, I admit, it usually is).

It’s not a question of enough, pal. It’s a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses.

Gordon Gekko, a world of fiction, like Hornblower on dawgman

However, the dead gecko this morning was in fact non fiction. Why not refer a true character, such as Madoff?
Oh, and I notice you regardless of main or right side. I just don’t really post continuously.
Like I said tho, good artical on EWU. Keep up the good work.

Baldwin was not Kitna's QB coach

They were teammates. Greg Olson who is the OC of the Tampa Bay Bucs was the OC and QB coach for both players.

by Jon Snow of House Stark on Aug 23, 2011 11:09 AM PDT reply actions

Hmmmm.... don't think so ...

… unless of course EWU’s bio on Baldwin is incorrect

While at Eastern, Baldwin has coached two of the greatest quarterbacks in NCAA FCS history – Erik Meyer (2002-2005) and Matt Nichols (2006-2009). At Central, he coached three of its all-time greats – NFL veteran Jon Kitna, current Eastern assistant coach Zak Hill and Mike Reilly.

There is a lot of misinformation on the Internet, so who knows?

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

by Gekko Mojo on Aug 23, 2011 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

You be the judge

Beau was expected to start in ‘92, as a Junior, which was Kitna’s 2nd year as he redshirted the year before. Jon unexpectedly won the job and Beau was the back up for the ’92/93 & 93/94. Central won their co championship in 95, while Beau was a graduate assistant. Greg Olson was the OC and QB coach, now at Tampa.

Central may be small college ball, but he’s not gonna replace Olson. Beau isn’t gonna have much impact on a senior that had already broken most of Central’s passing yards.
No doubt it looks good on a resume, because he was on staff so to speak.

by Gekko Mojo on Aug 23, 2011 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

Beau and I came in together. After two a days were over we celebrated by doing a “barberchair” with Thunderbird and Maddog. It was my first. Scoring alcohol in E-burg isn’t easy for underage kids who don’t know their way around podunk. Kitna came in the year after.
We obviously were not going to play our freshman year… hence the lil private party by a few freshman.
I took classes at the U a decade later.

YES

But we acted like it put hair on our chests. I walked in on it, and Beau was in the chair. First time we had a chance to genuinely rub elbows after two a day’s. I played D. Got closer during our careers, played on the same intramural hoop squads and such. He was solid in hoops and a great dude.

However he know’s I’m not rooting the Eagles when they play. We both rooted for the Dawgs on the big stage.

You guys are idiots

I hope to God Eastern beats the Huskies because of the dorks that post on this website. You are all pretty cocky and have a lot of high hopes for a team that was picked 3rd in a 6 team division and 7th out of 12. Please . . .

EWU will probably lose but they will make you poop your pants first. If they win, we (Eastern Fans) will poop our pants too . . . . just for fun.

I am fairly certain that the 12th place team in our 12 team conference could squeak one out against you. If EWU manage to come out and shock UW, it won’t be because you have any sort of talent advantage.

P.S. Is pooping your pants fun? I thought that was something people deliberately avoided.
