Washington will play Georgia on Friday (6:45PST start, on CBS) in the Charlotte, NC region of the East bracket. Georgia was 21-11 on the year, including a 9-7 SEC mark, and lost to Alabama in the SEC tournament. KenPom ranks them 57th (by comparison, UW is 15th). They play at a slower than average pace, so it will be important for the Huskies to get them playing uptempo, as that will definitely be to our advantage.
Georgia is certainly beatable. A win would set up a second round game against North Carolina, the 2-seed from the ACC, barring a huge upset by the Tar Heels' opening round opponent, the Long Island Blackbirds. North Carolina won the ACC regular season title, and lost to Duke in the ACC Tournament Championship game. This will be a tough one for the Huskies, especially since it will be a near home game for UNC. Still, this would be a chance for the Huskies to get a win against one of the favorite sons of college basketball and Husky fans should relish the chance should it come.
After that, Washington would go to the Newark, NJ regionals to take on the winner of the Syracuse/Indiana St/Xavier/Marquette grouping, but let's get through the opening weekend first.
Other Pac-10 teams in the tourney are Arizona (5-seed), UCLA (7-seed) and in a surprise, USC (11-seed play-in vs. Virginia Commonwealth). Gonzaga, winners of the WCC, is an 11-seed as well. Colorado, which joins the Pac-12 next season, was not selected in what could be seen as a bit of a snub.
Go Huskies!
