QB Ronnie Fouch --- Starter for eight games in 2008 after an injury to Jake Locker, but then transferred following the 2009 season to Indiana State, where he was the starter last season. Interesting to wonder, obviously, how he might have fit into the 2011 QB situation had he stayed.

Interesting question
… Fouch put up nice numbers at Indy St as the regular starter. Though he lacked the ideal physical dimensions, I have a hard time thinking that he would not be the favorite going into next year if he were still here. I might even go as far as to say that he’d already have the job handed to him outright based on a few observations:
1. He’s been a starter
2. He was already recognized as a budding team leader when he left
3. He’d have had the same amount of time in the system as Price
4. He has demonstrated good football IQ – a quick study who seemed to be able to grasp offenses
5. He would’ve been a clear fan favorite
6. Neither Price or Montana figure to be so off the charts that they could be considered outright favorites to beat out the upperclassman
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
Add to that...
The difference in Fouch between 2008 and 2009 (in practice) was incredible. He improved as much or more as Locker. While he obviously didn’t have the arm strength that Locker had, he definitely increased the zip he could get on the ball, and he was more accurate. It’s too bad that all the people that ragged on him in 2008, when he was put into a no-win situation as a redshirt freshman, never got to see how much better he’d gotten.
He would’ve gotten the reps that Price got this season, which would’ve put him even further ahead (and Price further behind, I guess).
I agree with all of your points (especially leadership and football IQ), and there’s no question in my mind he’d be the starter in 2011.
so, did he make the right call?
…is two years as a starter at Indy St worth trading one year as a starter at UW, especially with the prospect of a possibly decent bowl staring us in the face next year?
I don’t know what Ronnie’s priorities are, so I can’t say. However, given what he endured in 2008, I’d have to guess that a successful 2011 season as the starting QB for UW would have been wonderfully rewarding for him.

There’s such a small window of opportunity to play football for most people. For most of us, it’s high school. I think Fouch just wanted to maximize the number of snaps he was going to get. I certainly don’t fault him for that.
I don’t think he harbors any illusions about playing in the NFL, so I don’t think it really mattered too much where he got to play as much as how much he got to play.
When he made his decision, there was no guarantee he’d be the guy in 2011. As for 2008, he got way too much of the blame for what happened. It would’ve worked against him in 2011 as far as fan support goes.
I wanted him to stay for selfish reasons obviously. It’d be nice to have a 5th-year senior to start the season.
