So as expected, suggested and defended here UW Rolls on. SU Post Mortem

Okay Dawg Pound, lets play a game of concessions okay?

I will concede that was a highly convincing and effective W for your Huskies,

But will you concede SU gave you more of a scare early, and more of a challenge overall then you anticipated?

I will concede that my notion of SU having the edge due to pressure on UW did not come close to holding water,

But will you concede that SU's Ryan Nassib, and offense overall handled themselves rather well in a very hostile and difficult environment?  That while pressure wasn't a factor against UW, the home field advantage wasn't too much of factor against SU either.

UW simply has a better team.  Significantly more talent at the skill positions on offense then the SU defense can handle right now.   Our D played well early, but as adjustments were made and as the game wore on, the lack of depth and skill in the secondary really showed.

Nice win, congrats.  Hope our teams meet up again in future years, there simply are not enough bi-coastal rivalries in CFB.

PS - Fox Sports announcers, Ryan Nassib is a RS SOPHMORE, NOT A JUNIOR.  I don't know what that little detail bothered me so much, but it did.

PPS - I don't care what the score was, THE MARINERS OVER THE HOME OPENER, ON THE SECOND SUNDAY OF FOOTBALL?  WITH A HEISMAN CANDIDATE ON THE FIELD?   I should look back at the game thread here, I don't image that went over too well.

And if you ever find out

who registered “cusefan100” as an alternate handle, please let him/her/it know that the same sentiment does not go for them.

not just him

There was also “Gotch Carr Superstar” before him. I’m guessing both of them were trolls from other teams, but if they were truly Syracuse fans, what a couple of pu$$ies. They talk a big game ahead of time and then are nowhere to be found after the game. So much for the east coast being the “tough” coast.

Early lead was due to field position and a few early special team mistakes

We were losing the field position battle again early on. We started the game on special teams the way our special teams played in week 1 vs. BYU- which was just devastating.

However, as our offense got rolling, the spcial teams picked it up and I can’t recall any other special teams blunders after the opening quarter. We are very young on special teams, but talented. I thought our special teams finally figured it out from the 2nd quarter on.

Syracuse fans should be proud of the way the Orange played. I was impressed with the effort of the defensive front. Offensively the Orange need a few more skill players to move the ball more consistently.

AND our defense . . .

letting their QB run 35+ yards for a touchdown.

It happens Lear

Nobody is going to shut everything down consistently. But the fact that we only gave them one TD when it counted tells us that our defense was dialed in.

Sure... home field advantage was what it was ...

… home field is typically worth 3 pts in any game based on execution barriers that the home team’s fans impose on the visitors. I think it was probably worth three points on Saturday (maybe a disruption in timing on that missed FG).

Regardless, let’s not overstate home field advantage. The game is won and lost when talented, skilled players put in time to prepare and exert effort in execution.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

Just the skill players? I hate the term skill players even though I catch myself using it too. Offensive linemen are skill players too. No one scores unless the O line blocks and that takes skill. Our O line isn’t great, but they’re working their tails off to get better.

Uhhhh....
…talented, skilled players…

by Sundodger on Sep 13, 2010 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions

"Talented" and "Skilled" threw me off

Both words mean the same to some extent, so I thought Gekko meant “Skill players”. Talented, skilled players seems redundant when both words mean the same.

talent = natural aptitude
skill = learned aptitude

by Sundodger on Sep 13, 2010 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions

This

You can’t teach talent, but you aren’t going to win with talent you can’t teach. The best players have both.

by The Ancient Mariner on Sep 13, 2010 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions

I get that

But when you use talented and skilled together, it sort of becomes a redundant statement, especially if you don’t notice the ed. Notice how I thought you said skill player rather then skilled player? How about just referring to them as great players?

you justed insulted every man named Ed on the planet

In fact, Ed cunningham is pissed.

Seriously, talented and skilled are not remotely redundant. Examples:

Talented QB= Todd Marinovich
Skilled QB=Doug Flutie
Talented and Skilled=John Elway

In terms of blogfans?

Talented=Lear
Skilled=KirkD
Talented and Skilled=Crazi

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

I'm taller than Flutie...

…but then again, who isn’t? ;)

by kirkd on Sep 13, 2010 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Talented, huh?

Fair enough, I am still alive, so therefore I must be somewhat talented as a pilot.

You’re first two examples I can agree with, but on the second set, your third example leaves something to be desired.

thanks for coming back Johnny

I didn’t buy any of your first post……until kick off time. There was some confusion about the kick off time, 4 or 5pm. SYR used the correct 4 and the Huskies showed up at 5. I kept thinking about the quick start you talked about and DID GET. You can only dig a hole so deep before you can’t get out anymore. Keep starting games like that and you will have a happy season.

by dawgdude on Sep 13, 2010 3:49 PM PDT reply actions

Well...

…I was thinking the game would be closer than predicted, and for a half I was right. Then the 2nd half happened, and the Huskies pulled away.

I’ll give Syracuse credit – they’re not the pushover they were in 2007. Nassib is far from a finished product, but he showed me some good things – his mobility, his composure, decent arm strength. He started to get a little more scattershot in the 2nd half, but he’s a QB with potential. The DE’s showed me some ability, and the LB’s were active.

Syracuse is on a better path than they were with Robinson, and Marrone seems like he might be the guy to get them back to respectable – they’re probably another season or two of recruiting and coaching from getting there.

Thanks to Johnny for being one of the more enlightened visitors we've hosted

And I’ll totally concede that Cuse came to play. You’ve got a good coach with a young team, and at some point they’ll come around. I think that game would have been significantly closer had it been at the dome.

Good luck to you for the rest of the season.

by B Money on Sep 13, 2010 5:54 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Yes, I can that Syracuse gave me a scare early, and yes, more of a challenge than I had anticipated.

My hat’s off to Syracuse for their effort and play, but like you, I believe the better team won.

MARINERS

Anybody else p—-d about this. I leapt out of my chair when the Mariners game came on. IDIOT SAVANTS, DOOFUS. The mariners are huge losers.
Only antidote I had was to turn sound off and turn on KJR. Weird though KJR was broadcasting 5 seconds ahead of TV. Even called a touchdown before the play started on TV.
I still cannot believe the IGNORAMUS’s running FSN.

I'm with you PD

…I think FSN pissed everyone off with that move.

I got on their FaceBook page and ripped em a new one

What a bunch of idiots. It’s not enough that their production, as a whole, stinks —they’ve got to go and do something idiotic like this to further justify their bush league reputation.

by Bamer_ on Sep 16, 2010 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

The Mariner game was a lousy move

but on Comcast, the WSU game got bumped for a replay of a SEC soccer match. I’ll repeat that.

Fox College Sports Pacific, bumped a live college football game (with two Pac-coast teams), for a replay of an East Coast College Soccer game. I can’t wait for our TV deal to run out.
